Microsoft is sparing those parts of the world from their orwellian trojan device. They should be grateful. ♥

I'm curious why people aren't more concerned about the creepy always-on kinect camera that monitors you in your own home to crazy extents like gauging your pulse... Its one step away from orwellian telescreens. Actually, given recent news of what the NSA is up to, they would have direct access to all that anyways, so it pretty much is exactly an orwellian telescreen. But nobody seems to care. This actually frightens me, the camera itself and the fact most people seem okay about it.

Personally, idc about used games and I could swallow the always online thing, but the mandatory surveillance device makes it something I would not even think about allowing in my home, let alone paying hundreds of dollars to put it there. Ya no I wouldn't even put up with a roommate getting one, or if I had kids I wouldn't let them buy one, only because of this. But I feel like I must seem a paranoid fool to everyone else, and thats driving me a little nuts. Part of me just wants to scream incoherently "don't you understand!?"

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure why Microsoft's pushing for an "always-on" Kinect.:?

Yea, especially when they did say that the Kinect won't always "spy on you".

Well, they did come out and say you can just turn it off totally if that's your thing.

Regardless of what the NSA might get up to, that's hardly something Microsoft would allow if they were acting like the Party.

They want to monitor you and your behaviors and set up the king of all ad algorithms and drm systems. NSA having free reign to take all of it (and they will) is just icing ion that already creepy cake. Well, thats a lot more then icing, and what microsoft are doing is a lot more then just creepy, but you get what I mean.

You know how Google tracks what you search for to "personalize" teh ads they show you? Microsoft wants to personalize ads by monitoring not just what you do, but how you react to it, physically and emotionally. They want to track if your even looking at the ads so they can find better ways to catch your attention. Yes, the new kinect can do all that. Am I the only person royally creeped the **** out by that?

"you can turn it off"

Not while your using the xbox for anything, or as they hope, really doing anything at all involving your tv period. Can't even turn it off just to listen to music or watch netflix. So whenever your doing anything involving your tv, its watching you, and everything it sees Microsoft can see, and everything Microsoft can see the NSA can see. Privacy? Gone.

Its a surveillance device. In fact, Germanys privacy chief even calls it a straight up trojan horse, surveillance equipment disguised as entertainment to get into your home. I completely agree with him, in fact I've adopted that word because it fits so perfectly.

Which kinda defeats the purpose of making us have it on in the first place

It's good people are speaking out on it on a public level. It needs more attention, and I hope the American media picks up on it.

I suppose I really just don't give a **** if Microsoft sees me watching My Little Pony on Netflix.

This is one area I really break with the Libertarian Party on. PRISM and monitoring communications are one thing, as I think that being able to privately communicate without fear of being overheard is important. But just sitting there watching TV? ****, there are lot worse things I can think of people watching me doing.

And at the moment, there's no indication that microphone on the Kinect can record and upload data, but we'll have to wait for information before being certain.

As for the advertisements, well, game on, guys. If you can increase the attention I pay to advertising to "above non-zero", then good for you.

Calling it a trojan horse or a survelliance device just sends this into conspiracy theory territory. I'm sorry, maybe it has the potential for abuse, but there is no worldwide conspiracy to get video surveillance into the homes of people, and any potential benefits to that are far outweighed by the resources that would be necessary to implement and operate it and the potential blowback of such a scheme. Even PRISM is mainly focused on tracking communications with potentially threatening foreign targets. I think your other points are valid, but this is just tinfoil hat stuff.

Honestly, I think somebody at Microsoft just thought it would be really cool if they could turn on their system by saying a phrase and marketing thought that would be a nice bullet point on their advertisements. That and they were already bundling Kinect with the system anyways because of its status as a system seller. Frankly, I still think this shock and awe about it being "ALWAYS ON, ALWAYS MONITORING" has been overblown and reported like something like the local news runs at 11'o'clock to grab viewers.

ANYWAYS. So as to try and keep this thread from being all doom and gloom, the family sharing thing is looking like one thing Microsoft has actually got a great idea with.

http://arstechnica.c...-game-policies/

Since its announcement, there has been some confusion over the details of sharing your Xbox One game library with up to ten "family members." Mehdi couldn't give comprehensive details, but he did clarify some things.

For one, a family member doesn't have to be a "blood relative," he said, eliminating the extremely unlikely possibility that the Xbox One would include a built-in blood testing kit. For another, they don't have to live in the primary owner's house—I could name a friend that lives 3,000 miles away as one of my "family members" Mehdi said.

You'll be able to link other Xbox Live accounts as having shared access to your library when you first set up a system and will also be able to add them later on (though specific details of how you manage these relationships is still not being discussed). The only limitation, it seems, is that only one person can be playing the shared copy of a single game at any given time. All in all, this does sound like a pretty convenient feature that's more workable than simply passing discs around amongst friends who are actually in your area.

I'm 35 years old, and I've been playing computer and video games for about 27 of those. I'm way, way past the point of giving a damn about any console wars or fanboy stuff or whatever. Been there, done that, way back with my trusty ZX Spectrum in fact.

I just care about what's best for me with my gaming choices and the hundreds of pounds I'll have to spend when I want a new system. I can't afford to just buy everything.

So far at least, it's a very easy choice. I went from a PS2 to Xbox 360 and was happy with it, but a switch back to Sony sounds most likely at this point in time. Microsoft aren't so much sticking the foot in the mouth as trying to cram the whole leg in, and they're currently up to the kneecap.

Xbox one to me looks like one of the worst PR and business decisions Microsoft has ever done.
They're banking way too hard on brand loyalty.
Seriously... Locking your new console AT LAUNCH from potential buyers?!
Someone needs to get fired.

I think brand loyalty would have shifted consoles which are more expensive, but used games is a step too far.

In my brief time on planet Earth, I've never seen a company deliberatly trying to destroy themselves. It's astonishing. Simply, astonishing. I am dumbfounded. It's like they just are so glib and inept with a slice of incompetence.

I've never seen anything like it. If they don't change their buisness model- blocking used games, DRM, kinect always on. They will be done and done. It will truly be the XBOXdone.

At this point, it won't make a difference.

I am thankful that this is happening, and so should you guys be too. The industry tried to screw us, and they've succeeded in the past; but in this instance they'll hopefully (if people care about consumer rights) fail.

Besides, it's funny to read how everyone is ripping Microsoft.

It's depressing to see the people that write off MIcrosoft's current policies or ignore all of them except the one that matters least to them.

Haha, that's so true about advertising.  If anything, ads just annoy me so much they decrease the chances I'll buy the item being advertised.  Especially on tv when they run the same commercial twice in a row .

I actually like competition between the two, because if Sony takes complete dominance of the industry there's a chance they might get lazy in the future because there's no other company to push them

And don't say Nintendo because they're never gonna beat Sony
