It seems like Microsoft can never catch a break. At first, people complain about the online features, and now that they take them away, people want it back.

Those aren't "online features." They're DRM policies.

I'm pretty sure the Xbox One would have been the next Dreamcast if they kept those DRM policies.

I do hope they try to bring back the ability to access your digital library on any console and share games with up to ten friends on your list in some shape or form in the future. Those ideas really interested me.

Being able to share my games with somebody half way across the world without mailing them the disc is a feature.

Having to phone home every 24 hours is DRM.

The old X1 system had both.

Well, for you, an apology.

But you have seen more than a few people coming out of the woodwork to spout that exact nonsense as true.

The message I posted was to all of them.

Just to play the devil's advocate, some of those features do need DRM for it to work as intended. Since you don't need discs and everything are stored in the hard drive, it seems like the only logical way (for Microsoft) to have 24 hours policy to prevent piracy. Not everyone has stable internet connection, and there are times people bring their consoles with them on the go, so internet is not always available for them.

Most of it's ridiculous, but I do agree that the loss of the library and the sharing is dissapointing. And I don't think it's coming back without some sort of guarantee to the publishers that the consoles will be going online; that's the carrot they're getting to convince them to take that stick when they're paranoid about piracy and used games as it is.

Re: our previous conversation about the Blu Ray drive, I think all this could have been avoided if they simply used it for (hypothetical) backwards compatibility and movie playing. If they'd gone on stage, declared that the disk is dead, and moved to making all games digital it could have worked. As such, I don't think the drive necessarily changed everything, if they had only better managed the gaming and PR side of it.

And there are some radical ideas that could be implemented to still allow a form of retail sales that the BSN has talked about before, if that would truly be a problem, but I digress.

As to the family sharing options being implemented in the way people thought, I wouldn't bet on it. What did we actually know about the share system anyway?

PR said one thing (two people at a time, but not the same game, think of it as a library and checking books out)
Execs said another (two or more people at time, people playing MP games together)
And support said a third thing (6 people at once. MS twitter support, pfffft).
That's it! We knew **** all about it!

Major Nelson  he was working on a detailed explanation of what the Family Plan was. That never came. Then they then changed policies. They didn't even have enough faith in it to fully explain it. What info does anyone have that clarifies that it was going to be worth anything? Could I play a full game, was it timed, is it limited to one person, was it a one off, is like a demo? What? Nobody new a thing.

They had 2 weeks between announcing it and back tracking to fully explain it. They never did. If they didn't explain it then and there, what makes people think they would have explained it until after release?

On February 20, 2013, Gaikai announced that PlayStationPlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 titles would be made available for Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 console in addition to features like Remote Play for PlayStation Vita.[27][28]

Does "made available" mean they're expecting you to buy these games a second time?

It's already possible yes, but you have to buy the game digitally in the first place... if you buy the physical editions, you can't remove the disk while playing, that's what I was talking about.

This is actually how most PC games are, actually. I haven't bought a PC game in a few months (maybe a year or two) that required me to keep the CD in. You install and you're good to go.

That COULD have worked, but it risked people saying "The drive is still there, why can't we buy our games on disc?"  What the balance of outcry would have been between no drive, drive but not for games, drive with game discs that are just used to install but not for anything else--is murky.

Almost certainly.  It would require some kind of emulator or other front-end software added to those pre-PS4 titles to get them to work on the PS4.  Like DOSBox on GOG, or whatever Steam tackes onto older games, or however Marketplace and Wii allowed you to purchase older games.  They have to be tweaked to work.

Were it like PC gaming, you could just download patches to get your older games to work on newer systems (or use something like DOSBox yourself.)  Sometimes this falls on other gamers to code the patches, but it gets covered.

But for console games... older gen discs are next to useless, just like the catridges on different Nintendo machines.

Which is one of the reasons I never picked up the old one, my internet sucked back than. It's somewhat improved now but I'm still not a fan of the DRM thing, I also fail to see why a 24 hour check in is required to have a file sharing feature.

I think the outcry for either of the first two would have been less than the third option, and I suspect that the middle option might have caused some teen gnashing but could have been handled if they had better PR than what the've had. But then, better PR than what they've had might have made the third option more palatable too. Murky indeed.

How MS can solve this:

Partner up with valve and release Half Life 3, L4D3, and Portal 3 in an X1 exclusive trilogy pack.

Pretty sure the resulting nerd rage from the PC crowd would cause the world to explode.

Or we would just make angry internet posts about it and the rest of the world would go on not caring.

One of the two.
