Not if the console remains offline.
Then they'd get away with one game, would have no way of playing multiplayer and cannot download DLC. Going online would also have them be perma-banned.
You make very good points.

One need only look at the PC and its dominant digital market to see
how far major publishers can be trusted. Steam is its own DRM. When you
buy a game from Steam, it's about as protected from piracy as it can
get. That didn't stop companies like Electronic Arts and Ubisoft from
sticking their own DRM in on top of Steam's protection. Be it
SecuROM or constant Internet connections, these publishers were so
paranoid and desperate for a sense of control they crammed extra
restrictions on top of existing ones.
And to linger further on Electronic Arts, this is the same company
that said, five years ago, games need to stop all coming out at $60. CEO
John Riccitiello said companies need to explore cheaper games and
flexible pricing. Did EA lead the charge? Did it ****! Instead, it
produced Origin, its own digital service where it could handle
distribution and do away with physical production ... and still charges $60 per game.
People could argue that EA still relies on retail and can't afford to
tread on its toes. What, exactly, was Xbox One doing to change that?
Retail was still a massive part of Microsoft's plans. GameStop,
the pretend villain of the game industry, was going to be looked after,
because the game industry is in league with it.
Some suggest we'll see an increase in pre-order bonuses, but again,
such things are still all over the ****ing PC market. Going all-digital
doesn't change that. Companies will still use these things to try and
desperately entice gamers, with exclusive pre-order DLC on various
online store fronts, and "digital deluxe" editions that allow a company
to charge $80 for a bunch of virtual goods. This is **** already
happening in the increasingly digital PC market, and the idea that
companies would suddenly stop a gravy train in full motion is almost
child-like. That we all could believe in faeries!

I had read the article but I'm not sure it was posted here before. It's pretty much what Jim's been saying for a while now, nothing new there. And if we're being meticulous here, Steam's DRM can be circumvented.

Corrected that for you.
BEFORE THE LAUNCH of Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty, you could download a cracked, playable version of the Single Player campaign.
They will not stop pirates nor hackers. They won't.
Best you can do is make it more convenient and worth you time to legitimately get something than it is to torrent / crack it.

Of course none of those try to get anything done, and certainly don't live in the real world.

Seriously, for someone hanging out on a gaming forum, EA, I'm often surprised at your attempts to appear superior (as in - "I am interested in greater, more lofty things!")
I should have been more specific: by "get anything done," I mean people that produce things, who deal with physicality, people in business, science, health. Not liberal arts.
And where did I point to myself? I never did that at all. You put those words "in my mouth."
I don't think myself superior. I consider gamers, including me, unimportant.

Hey, let's take all of our digital possessions and let Microsoft have them, on their cloud storage, with their rules, and its totally awesome and so the future and is amazing because its Xbox!! Oh my goodness, Xbox! Xbox! Omg, I get a massive boner just seeing that Xbox symbol!
The only real problem I have with this kind of opinion is that some of the people who go around bashing this type of thing (DRM) swear by Steam.

When it comes down to it, it's all about the money. Personally I hate most forms of DRM on principle, but I'm wiling to put up with it for the right price. Steam's DRM is not as much of a nuisance as always online or securom, and is not such an indignity that I would reject the savings. You may not be able to resell steam titles, but if you get them on sale, than you will usually save more money than you would have by buying it on disk and reselling it anyway.EntropicAngel wrote...

I guess there's nothing else to say except that the current system is valid, but I disagree with it in principle. It's pretty much a system that sets its participants up for failure.
If the participants fail then they deserve to, and they set themselves up for failure. They've got no one to blame but themselves. If the likes of SquareEnix sell 3.5 million copies of Tomb Raider in a month (£140,000,000) and still consider it a failure, then they deserve to fail. £140 million? What thehell are they doing that they don't consider £140 million successful? How have their budgets become so inefficient and bloated that this was not enough?

I don't think anyone has any illusions about what Steam is, the difference being that Steam has not used the system as a cynical attempt to line it's pockets at the expense of gamers, it actually can't, not with the competition it has. MS yeah, not so much. If Origin has taught us anything, it is that once a company establishes a monopoly or at least significant control over part of the market, it's going to use that control to gouge people at every opportunity it can.

These types of things affects stocks as well and if you make investors nervous...well you see how fast they sell your stock....this move pleases investors and makes the consumer happy...just don't think that they did it for consumers tho...since just a few days prior they was determined to stick to these incredibly ridiculous consumer controlling policies....
