To be fair if you're buying a console at this point without a hdtv (or a converter) you're being ridculous.

Cheap HD TVs are like...300 bucks.

The BetamaXBox One is still screwed if, as a console, requires people who regularly borrow games from friends, buy used games, or rent used from places like Gamefly to pay a fee to be able to play any used game. 

. I doubt it would be screwed.  People might be pissed about it, but I don't think it'd break the console.

Also I don't understand why this has improved Wii U sales. "There is no games for this thing! I'm going to run out and buy that other console that's not really next-gen and also has no games!"

No way is it screwed. People are just angry, as much as they want it to fail, it'll still sell. Just not as much as it could've, which at this point is a good guess.

Wii-U is relatively cheap, backwards compatibility, some Wii-U games, not complicated, eye pleasing graphics (yeah, don't turn your nose up), HD, and a killer E3 ahead for it's fans.

Yeah, it has its appeal for those interested. I guess I'm more a fan of Nintendo's handhelds, and thats PURELY for the Pokémon games, and even then I think I'm finally done with them. But man I played them a lot as a kid.
