They consult Mr. Bong when making market projections.

Besides the user's personal preference, that can depend on the game as well. The Witcher 2 was better with a controller than KB&M.

I hate the keyboard + mouse combo for anything other than RTS games. This was the major barrier to me using the PC as a gaming rig. Thanks to The Witcher (which forced me to play PC), I've given the PC a shot and plan on getting a compatible controller to play my games from now on.

http://www.vg247.com...xbox-360-units/Xbox One: Microsoft aims for 1 billion lifetime sales, 100 million Xbox 360 units
Microsoft’s senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business Yusuf Mehdi has stated that given the broad multimedia focus of Xbox One, there’s no reason why it can’t shift between 400 million and 1 billion consoles in its lifetime. He said the company is also angling for 100 million Xbox 360 console sales in the next five years.
Speaking with OXM, Mehdi said of Microsoft’s hopes for Xbox 360, “We believe over the next five years we can break a 100 million unit installed base. That’s something we’re shooting for, it’s not a financial plan as such, it’s just rough numbers if you will.
“To sell another 25 million, half of those will probably come from replacements, but half will come from new buyers. And the way we’ll break into those segments is by hitting new price points, getting new classes of entertainment to come with the Xbox, and breaking into new customer segments. So you’ll see the Xbox 360 continue to exist, even as we launch the next generation Xbox One.”
On the subject of Xbox One sales and the growth of the market with the herald of next-gen formats, Mehdi continued, “Every generation, as you’ve probably heard, has grown approximately 30%. So this generation is about 300 million units. Most industry experts think the next generation will get upwards of about 400 million units. That’s if it’s a game console, over the next decade.
“We think you can go broader than a game console, that’s our aim, and you can go from 400 million to potentially upwards of a billion units. That’s how we’re thinking of the Xbox opportunity as we go forward.”
Wait..
If they're working with those projections...
Haha, it's like looking back into 2006 at Sony's PS3 reveal.

Haha. Even if the population is 8 billion by the time the X1 become obsolete, that means one in every eight individuals will personally own one. Given that many consoles will be family owned, it makes that 1 billion mark ridiculous. I'd say 200 - 250 million is a reasonable top estimate, and only if they sidestep the current negativity towards their console. Otherwise, it may not exceed the Xbox 360.

Or they know their consoles are going to spontaneously combust like their previous console did and force a lot of rebuys.

Look man the 360 "only" sold 75 million units in almost 8 years and that was a huge success, There is no reason to believe that the Xbone will sell more than 100 million and that is only if it's a gionormus success.

You could build a brand new system with an i5 3570k and a GTX 660 for around $600. If you're willing to put one or two-hundred dollars more into the graphics card you will have a really decent system with good performance at 1080p that will play games at or above the graphical quality of the new consoles.

"Xbox One will come bundled with Microsoft’s new Kinect sensor bar, and a
new patent filed by the company suggests the device will impose certain
DRM restrictions based on who it sees in the room, and more.
UPDATE:Microsoft has contacted MCV
with comment, which reads, “Microsoft regularly applies for and receives patents as part of its business practice; not all patents applied for or received will be incorporated into a Microsoft product”.Which is not a denial, so do keep an open mind on everything in this post for now.ORIGINAL STORY:ExtremeTech, as we told you yesterday,
reports that the patent is for tech that sees Kinect monitoring how many people are in a room at once. If the number exceeds the amount allowed on a game or film’s license, then you the owner of the content, must pay for an extended license.Below you’ll find an image from the patent, and while it’s an old one, MCV reports that sources have confirmed to the site that this will be implemented in Xbox One.
The bottom line is that the filing reads, “The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the number of user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken.”‘Remedial action’ could mean the purchase of a new, extended license, or worse. The problem is that we’re not yet sure. If true, is this wrong? Should Microsoft be answering these questions now? Let us know below."

More problematic is MS's poor record with old games one still would like to play. If there emerges a real winner on the XB 1, for how long will we be able to continue to play it? Before EA,.. oh, sorry, I mean MS, decides that we should play some newfangled ultramanure instead, and think that more customers can be secured for the new version, if the plug is pulled on the old?
But that might not really be an issue, because MS may bite off more than they can chew.
I think that what they now plan for the XB, the role they perceive, is the wrong platform/frontier and way too late. They should have done all that a decade, or more, ago. And they should have done it all with the Windows PC.
They are now betting on the future of the TV as an entertainment centre. I kinda see tablets and glasses as the main future venue for that. They (MS) also take a market battle where they are weak, not strong. MS is very vulnerable at the XBox. And they will remain so, pretty much indefinitely. On the PC OS market, otoh, they were very, very strong. And they should have defended that market and that strength.
With PC games, among other things (they did the opposite). Any attractive applications which make use of the PCs strength. It's always the application that sells the platform. And the Web and business will not keep the Windows PC alive. It's already dying as we speak, as those things are moving on to phones, tablets and thin clients.
Meanwhile, MS do not (any longer) have the financial muscles to do real battle on the market for a new home multimedia gadget. Not if a serious player, who know how to do this right, decides to make their move.
But, on the positive side, - MS do try. They don't just lie down and await bleakness. So, we'll see.
