I just listed the things I could remember about the X1 in a PM and realized that it actually doesn't sound that bad to me, concerning how I play my games(I'm always online anyway, I never lend my games, etc etc).

I'm open-minded to the X1 and PS4 both. I'm not at all behind the fuss everyone's making, though I understand it.

That's my perspective as well.

I fully understand where people are coming from, alot of it has to do with the principle. But in my case, I buy virtually all my games new and lend them out far more often than I am lended games. I also have a constant internet connection, so from a practical stand point I'm virtually unaffected.

I like the Kinect features/tv integration which Microsoft showed during their presentation, so if they can demonstrate some great new exclusive IPs (aside from Halo and that great new Roman fps) , I'm pretty much sold.

In any case, it seems like the console is adopting a delivery method very similar to Steam

Exactly, thank you voice of reason on internetstubes.

As a PC gamer, I don't see much in Xbox One that I'm not already used to.  No used games, haven't had that for years.  Online checks, had that for years.  BFD.

Internet is goin through its predictable reaction stage.  Microsoft focused on the multimedia side of the machine at the show, even though they told everyone weeks in advance that they were going to save the games for E3, so everyone is complaining at the lack of game focus.  Nobody listens apparently.

My question is, do people actually want the thing to only play games or something?  Is there really a problem with it doing other thigns?  You have to admit, it does make TV better, if your into that.  Do people not want it to play movies, netflix, etc?  Cause they sure use those features a lot for somethign they act like they don't want.  We're in the post-console era now.  Wii-U really will probably be the last true dedicated gaming console.  Is that what people really want?  Doesn't seem like it...

I can actually see how amazing the Xb1 is for multimedia.  Gamers can tunnel vision all they want and ignore its qualities to riff on it being less video game focused then they want, and if playing games is really all they care about, then Xb1 obviously isn't for them.  But I think its conservative minded to expect consoles today to be like they were 10 years ago, dedicated gaming machines.  They just arent anymore, welcome to the future where yoru phone is a ****in camera.  And to claim that people who do care about the multimedia stuff are just the "dumb casuals" is ubsurd.  I care about the multimedia and I've bought over 200 games on steam in the last 2 years since I BUILT MY OWN PC.  So don't generalize.  (them, not you person I quoted)

There is a problem because it doesn't actually do those other things better than the other specialised devices that are already in existence, which do the job better, and I already own them.

I don't admit it makes TV better, it was a stupid move. A system which is supposed to replace TV, but requires an actual TV to work >.< demented in every sense of the concept. The digital TV I'm using can connect to the net, I can watch films on demand quicker than on xbox, and I have the various menus I can program....why would I need to do any of this via an xbox? The Digital HDTVs do a better job, and I already have it, I don't need to pay extra for that service!

Rubbish. The PS4 is centred around games and the incoming steambox from Valve is essentially an miniturised modular PC to play games on, post console, please. the X1 simple decided to jump off in a completely different direction to ensure it's own redundancy.

Multimedia my arse. I have skype on my iPhone, what possible need do I have for it on xbox, I also have it on my PC. My PC is for work and high end games, watching and downloading films music etc. My TV lets me watch TV at the drop of a hat and browse films on demand. My console should focus on games and enhance that experience. The Wii was a novelty using games like Mario and the touch sensor system.

What microsoft did was declare themselves an entertainment system ignoring the fact that all their competitors already do what they're trying to do and do it better. They ensured their own irrelevency by giving up the middle ground to Sony, and lets not even start with the online, ID and system locking issues, xbox live costs etc.

If things stand as is, games won't matter as they'll essentially be a wash. Some will like Sony's, some will like Micro's. That's a massive win for Sony.

But, the P.R. train is rolling, and Microsoft will do spin control that will probably work to some extent. Lots of things can change by release.

Oh, and I am not confident at all Sony won't go the same direction on the subject of used games

If EA had announced an exclusive contract with Microsoft to release Star Wars games that might've been something.

I wonder of there is enough of a sample to give this poll a +/- 3% error margin.

Take heed at the market reaction!!! Lololololololol

15 new exclusives to be released in the first year, 8 of which are new IPs.

I imagine some will have Kinect functionality(if not all), but as far as being purely Kinect based? I dunno.

We'll find out soon enough.

No, it isn't ALWAYS online. But it does require being online at least once every 24 hours.

...so yes, it is always online.

EDIT: Although, for what it's worth, it won't be running into the same issues other Always Online fiascos (like Diablo 3 and SimCity) had. This will be a quick check in to make sure all licenses are valid... there won't be a server you have to play your games out of as par for the course.

So it is still a concern, but less of a guaranteed-disaster, in my book.

lol'd hard.

My internet goes down for days at a time sometimes. Not extremely often but more than often enough to make a one day check in EXTREMELY annoying.

Ah well this console clearly isn't for me.

Requiring a fee for used games makes sense.  Lets be honest: every time we lend out a game for anything more than a sample play, we've been stealing a copy of the game from them.

So true, I should remember to tell my sister to pay Panasonic £575 for my old TV that she borrowed when her's broke last year, and £200 to Microsoft when she borrowed my 360 that one time when her friends came round, and remember to tally up the total amount of money my dad owes book publishers, and tell my mum that she owes Dyson £400 when she borrowed my aunts vacuum when we moved house.

And remember to tell everyone ever that they owe a sh*t ton money to companies for using stuff that isn't completely new.

Borrowing is theft!

The second hand market is actually hurting the industry, though I wouldn't include "lending games to friends" to be in that category.  Software does not depreciate when used like physical items do, so those comparisons are not valid.

Thanks for beating me to that.

My point of view is that they are selling software, selling an experience.  Physical items are easy to control.  Their use is often constant.  Games tend to be a one-time thing (unless they're really good games).  How many people trade in their just-completed game for a new one?  Giving that game to a friend is a possible missed opportunity for the developer of the game.  I have absolutely no problem with letting a friend try out the game. Maybe Microsoft could actually allow this on their games; say a 2-hour trial without the activation code.  Something to think about.

What makes the X1 even more difficult to regulate is that the game is installed on the hard-drive.  No physical disk needed, so you could pass the disk on to a friend, and he to another friend, and he to another friend and so on, and every single person along the line could play the game any time they want, regardless of who is in possession of the disk.  That's a dangerous thing for Microsoft to allow.  Clearly they couldn't both allow install on the hard-drive and not link the game to your account somehow.

The important thing to always remember is that, because it doesn't appeal to you doesn't mean no one will find it appealing (whether or not people will find it appealing remains to be seen of course).

I, personally, haven't felt a need for a console since I was in a Rock Band craze in 2008, and that petered out relatively quickly.  Still, more "hardcore" units were shipped for both the primary consoles than my platform of choice.

EDIT: Although, for what it's worth, it won't be running into the same

It makes it more inline with Steam, IMO.  Which was also something that, while still having its critics now, was almost universally derided as something that offered features that were better obtained elsewhere and ultimately was seen as more of a liability than anything worth actually having.  So I think it's something we'll have to see let play out.

Steam does have a much nicer than 1 day allowance in terms of offline outages, however.  Still, it's on Microsoft to make sure that the infrastructre is still there, as there will be loads of server demand on new releases regardless (a huge issue Valve ran into with Half-Life 2 actually).

I'm also curious if there's simply some level of "inertia of status quo" at play.  It's different, and may be easier to focus on worst case negatives rather than even considering fringe benefits (let alone best case benefits).

From what I hear, it sounds like they tried to make it clear that E3 is where they were going to focus most of their gaming discussion, however, so it's hard for me to not see a lot of the initial outrage as being some level of Chicken Little screaming.

As a further note, I recognize that there will be some level of "inconsistent application of forum rules" since I don't frequent off topic section a lot, but I will be following this thread and will not have a large amount of tolerance for people just wanting to jump on the hate wagon, especially if it involves attacking other posters (or even Microsoft).

Not too many people have voice-commanded cable boxes, though, which is the feature they were selling.

And don't underestimate the value of integration.
