TB discusses the X1 on Content Patch

Reasonable video, softens my stance on the used games deal a little, actually. Either way I'm a tool for either Microsoft or Gamestop. The only winning position is not to care and go back to PC Olympus.

There's also Jim's video defending used games:

That's exactly how I was going to respond to Filament (and TB) but Jim Sterling said it for me. Thanks Jim!

Doesn't say anything about the microphone though.

Optimism says that would be a part of it, but we don't know. Still, its something.

Oh god "The system is designed to have Kinect be an integral part of the experience. It’s not the case where you’ll be able to remove the camera altogether. But you’ll be able to put the system in modes where you can be completely secure about the fact that the camera is off and can’t see you.”"

I don't want Kinect to be an integral part of the experience.

I also took issue with the wordchoice. When it said that there will be *modes* where you can be completely secure about the fact that the camera is off and can’t see you, does this mean that there are modes where the camera will be recording you without employing an indicator light?

I can't imagine that. More like there will be modes where it's totally off and modes where it's on, and there will indicators for all of them.

Examples I'm just fabricating-

Camera Off, Mic On
Camera On, Mic Off
Camera On, Mic On
Camera Off, Mic Off- though this one defeats the point, who knows. Chances are it'll be the most popular choice, hah

Hopefully that is a choice.

Off/Off apply forever.

I'd likely have Camera On, Mic On while gaming, but definitely have them turned off afterward. Or if I go through a stretch of games where Kinect is not used and unnecessary, have them off entirely.

If Camera Off, Mic Off was an available choice while using the console, why would they require you to plug it in?

Perhaps because if you begin to use a feature or game that requires Kinect, it automatically switches modes to get things going?

I don't know. Only they do.

Perhaps the X1 is programmed not to turn on if it doesn't see the Kinect's attached?

A very colorful defense of gamestop, though nothing he says really contradicts it still just being two soulless megacorporations vying to maximize profits at each others' expense even if they should hypothetically be able to depend on one another in a mutually beneficial arrangement.

I don't see why it should matter whether the Kinect is on or off when it comes to using the Xbone. Orweillian features aside, it's simply a glorified remote control.

After careful deliberation, I've decided I'll just keep playing my 360 until it plays out. By then maybe Microsoft will have pulled its head out of its ass long enough to make a new XB1 model without all the voyeurism, chains, and whips and then I'll buy that one.

I really don't want a machine in my home that is always watching me and listening to me and connected to the internet. Call me paranoid, but it seems like I'd be paying (for the device, the internet service, the games, AND the monthly subscription) to be monitored by companies that are looking for new ways to get me to pay them even more. And any information that would be gathered would be sold to other companies that also want my money.

Google glass ain't got nothing on what Microsoft is trying to pull.

And honestly, I'd rather use a controler as that would seem quicker and more efficient than yelling at the thing and waving my hands around like an idiot.

I didn't say on or off, I said "attached," as in it'll check the port or something.

It matters because Microsoft has filed a patent for technology that allows the Kinect to count the number of people in a room and adjust video rental prices accordingly. It matters because it would allow them to create advertisements that pause when you look away from the TV. It matters because the Kinect 2 is creepy and weird.

Oh, I completely agree w/ you. I simply said "Orwellian features aside..." in order to convey that, other than a spycam, it's really an overrated piece of crap that most gamers don't really want.

I can only assume that the people who designed the Xbone had recently—before they started drafting up plans for the new console—watched Minority Report and thought that the scene where Tom Cruise's character, John Anderton, is reviewing footage of the Precogs' vision of a murder that is about to occur, and thought that they should incorporate that into the Xbone.
