You know Microsoft is in trouble when even their devout fans on their forums are outraged and promising to move over, with their friends, to PS4.

The backlash is two-pronged. Pre-release, and post release. Casual gamers who don't know the inner workings of the Xbox One will get the system and then freak out when they can't trade games with friends and have to deal and cope with the DRM. They will get furious.

Also, Microsoft better hope no news agency does a story on the Kinect 2.0 camera. Moms and dads will be put off from buying. Politicians in different countries, Germany and Austrailia, are already speaking out.

Was watching a Total Biscuit vid about the Xbox One and I recall him saying that the core gamer market is smaller than the casual one, which it has been for a long time.

Agreed. I think its a fraction of the core gamer market thats going nuts, while casual gamers either have no idea, don't care, or think what they saw was cool. Though obviously even some of them would be put off.

That is until E3, if Microsoft does things right. If not, while they won't do terribly, Sony will obviously be the one in the lead out of the starting gate.

It feels like an election, with E3 being the debates.

Wii U is like the Ross Perot.

Microsoft is definitely going for the casual market more. To be mroe specific then that, they are going for the more overarching multimedia consumer market,. Its not just about gamers anymore. They want tv viewers, movie watchers, etc. everyone should of seen this coming with the way the xbox 360 has evolved over the past few years. I'll say it again, the Kinect out today was a glorified prototype for the Xbox One.

It doesn't worry me that consoles are going towards more multimedia and not pure gaming devices any more. I mean, how many of us care that phones do way more then allow us to talk these days? Maybe our grandparents. Xbox One looks to be doing some pretty cool things in the multimedia sphere.

That all said, unneeded defense of the megacorporation aside, I really don't like that they are pushing for cloud computing in games. I like my gaming localized. I don't like playing at the behest of a publisher keeping their servers online. I don't like purchasing glorified rentals that will stop working when a publisher stops supporting it a few years later. I don't want every game to be another Simcity 5 or Diablo 3. Unfortunately Xbox One is pushing for exactly that, they even have the developers of Just Cause promoting the idea. I really, really hope the likes of EA don't pressure Sony into following suit. They may not have it at launch but they could no doubt get it going on their gaikai network in the near future. That scares me. The death of any semblance of ownership scares me. If you buy a game that relies on cloud computing to run, you are really just paying for a service, one that will not exist 5-10 years later. I don't want that.

Some people will argue that gaming IS a service. I do believe Total Biscuit brought up the subject of ownership and such in one of his videos.

Used Games
Xbox One(overall)

Can't remember which one.

Read the fine print in a game manual. I believe they generally say they give you license to use, essentially. Careful lawyer words. It is like a service, and the supposed policy is an ugly adendum to the service.

Yeah, one of the first words you'll read is "license".

Though as we all know, nearly everyone doesn't read the agreements.

I don't buy games used. Doesn't have that new game smell.

I'm more worried about how sharing games will work. MS's system is incredibly anti-consumer in this aspect.

Thats legal speak for "buying this doesn't give you copyrights in any way"

You still own a game and can do whatever you want with it that doesn't infringe on copyrights.  Trade it, sell it, play it whenever you want.

If games are cloud based, that "play whenever you want" vanishes immedietly.  That, to me, is the most crutial part of ownership.  Without it, you have a glorified rental.  Your ability to play a game stops relying on your own owned tecnology remaining functional, it relies on the makers of the game deciding if they want you to keep playing or not.  Thats a dramatic leap from what we currently have.  If you don't think theirs any real ownership already then I can't even think of a word to call whats comming.
