Yoshida: PS4 Online DRM Will Be Up To Publishers (so kinda like the X1)

Not really. The system itself doesn't apply some sort of DRM from the onset.

Will Microsoft leave it to the publishers to implement online DRM schemes? Yes.

Will Sony leave it to the publishers to implement online DRM schemes? Yes.

Insofar as that question is concerned, the answer is the same.

Do you need to connect to online everyday on the FailBone? Yes
Do you need to do that on the PS4? No.

Indeed, but that wasn't the point I was trying to make.

Well, looks like a big part of Microgreed's target market just found something better.

I swear, Microsoft's going to lose both the gaming audience and the television audience as a result of this.

Great rant about the Xbox One here also.

Nope.  Can't trademark something as simple as a letter and a number.  And all of the interface elements are obvious enhancements of DVR/cable guide features that have been present for years.

Are developers who make multiplatform games going to have to use online DRM? Yes.

Are most games these days multiplatform? Yes.

This makes me breathe a sigh of relief. I was only considering getting a next-gen console anytime soon if DA3 was exclusively next-gen. I'm very happy that it seems as though it will also be available on current-gen. :D

I'm still quite nervous about DAI. It seems BioWare games are going in a direction I have no interest in. It's a frakking shame because DA is a great series.

They don't have to. Not all publishers have the infrastructure to support and maintain an online DRM system. EA probably will, maybe even Ubisoft.

I'm just going to admit right here that I don't understand how this works, but if a company has to make a game with DRM to run on the X1, doesn't that mean that they have to do the same for the PS4? Basically, is DRM an integral part of the game once it's put in there?

No. From my understanding, the DRM system on the Xbox One will be provided by MS and won't actually be something that the developers have to build and maintain. Sony is giving publishers the choice to implement it but they won't provide a universal DRM system themselves.

Oh, in that case I stand corrected.

It's going to be interesting to see reactions from kids and others who don't know this is going on with the Xbox and then they try to borrow a friend's game, or realize their console doesn't work because it isn't connecting to the internet because they live out in the country and don't have internet. It's going to happen. Those not in the know will be mad when its too late, and Microsoft is going to get tons of complaints and rage from them.
