I don't know why people keep saying that Microsoft is in a position of disadvantage. They are already getting a good amount of pre-orders. Having to connect to the internet every day isn't that big of a deal to the average family. HDTVs are becoming the norm in households. People love all of the apps that are already on the 360 and are going to be on the One. It's easy to chalk up the issues with the Kinect as simple paranoia. Their focus on things besides games are essentially making this console like a smart phone. The smart phones can still make calls and texts perfectly fine, but they also have a bunch of other stuff. A lot of people I know just hang on to their games instead of giving them out. Why would they give them out? It's their game. Over the past few months, Microsoft has shown that they are willing to do sales on their digital market. Microsoft is cutting out the poorer market because they probably feel that the poorer market is what contributed to the explosion of used game sales during the past generation. Why would Microsoft want your business if you can only afford $20 a month? They want to make money, and they are taking their chances with the more better off market. If people can afford to get it, then they will get it. Microsoft is doing just fine, they don't need the hardcore, rural or poor market.

utterly ridiculous.

although some of us have always on internet connections, living in a 3rd world country with unreliable lines renders purchasing this console rather futile. it is beyond the common man's control to make the internet work flawlessly.

oh wait, there isn't electricity in Africa, right?

user friendly my f-ing ass.

These apps you talk about only work in specific countries. Namely, they don't work in mine at all, so why should I pay for functionalities that I won't be able to use?

Why would Microsoft want my business if I can only afford $20 a month? Because it's $20 I spend buying their products, simple as that. If Microsoft were to do sales similar to Steam, they might just see a revenue increase, not to mention it'd probably kill the used-games market. Sure, Microsoft could advertise the X1 as "the next-gen console for the rich," but I'd strongly advise against it. Just because you won't aim your product at a certain market segment today doesn't mean you should go out of your way to alienate them. After all, tomorrow they may become your market segment.

Here is my question, if you have to connect to the internet once every 24 hrs. what happens when a natural disaster happens and you don't have an internet connection to allow you to do that? Where I live we can be hit by a hurricane and be with out power for weeks.

I mean hey, if half of the console won't even work in your country, then why buy it?

It does seem to me that Microsoft is moving towards the Steam model. No used games, no resells and completely digital. That's why the outcry against this system confuses me. Steam is one of the most popular selling platforms out there, they provide great deals (which Microsoft has already done with their digital market too) and the sales go directly to the publishers so they are much more free to choose the prices of the games. Something like that would make non-AAA titles much more visible to the average customer--as opposed to GameStop. People are saying "build a PC", but it seems that the PC is already providing the same deal!

I agree though, even people who can't afford consoles on the day of launch or games on the day of launch will still save up money or wait for a price drop to buy their products. It doesn't make much sense to tell people outright that they can not buy something if they don't have x, x or x. To a certain extent, I agree that HDTVs are much more common these days. To a certain extent, I agree that their average customer in their target demographic will have the internet. But to cut off the people who don't have those things? You're simply losing potential customers. I know plenty of people who feel that needing an internet connection all of the time is a deal breaker, either because money is tight or their towns internet is poor. The point I'm trying to get at is that all of these lost sales don't really affect Microsoft in the long run. The console will still sell. People ignore the negatives of consoles all of the time. Even when the RROD was rampant, the sales of the 360 still moved forward. Losing one or two types of customers is not that big of a deal to them.

Losing whole entire countries on the other hand...

They don't care.  I read that silly article two times to make sure if they didn't joke about it.
It's basically:
"Be connected on the internet or GTFO, you can't connect?
no problem you can still watch our superior television!" - Microsoft

As I understand it, you can't play single player games unless the X1 has checked in at least once every 24 hours. So, you can't play.

Some article said something about mobile internet connection, like connecting through your cell phone provider.  Understandably, that can drop out too in a natural disaster, but it may not.

Here's an article that helps explain why the Steam comparisons are ridiculous -

"But Steam Does The Same! And You Can't Trade iOS Games!

These two ridiculous counter-arguments have popped up in defence of Xbox One not allowing you to trade in or gift games, etc etc. It's not a 1-to-1 example, so it doesn't work as a counter-argument."

^ I know its archaic to some, but I (and many more) don't have internet services at home. Even if its available, that would cost another $50/month. Thus XBOX1 will cost an add'l $600/year to play.

Whoa Hahahahahah. Hahah. No.

Steam sells it's stuff dirt cheap. Have you seen any game on Xbox live go for as little as the Steam sales. They already have that option and they have never attempted to do the same. While Steam is moving towards a trade in scheme once it gets the fundamentals sorted.

Microsoft is the most monopolistic company within the software industry, they were fined record amounts by the EU Competition Commission after they were found guilt of attempting to enforce a monopoly with Windows.

At no point will MS or EA and their Ilk ever bring down gaming prices. The idea that retailers fix prices is insane and a fictional boogie man that the publishing industry has created. Or was EA's Origin all wrong when it priced it's products at £40 after removing every concievable cost to their sales.

Greed, pure fuking greed.

Exactly.  So does that mean that if I am without power and can't check in that I will be locked out forever and so therefore just threw away money on a console that won't ever work for me again?  Or will it work again once it has checked in?  Not only that, but I am going to be a little more worried about other things during these times then trying to check in on my Xbox with my phone.  I do have a life outside of xbox and don't always have that on my mind.

Wow, before i was almost for sure i wasn't getting the xbox one. But after hearing this crap confirmed no, no freaking way. My internet is fairly reliable where i live, but it does have times where it just goes out. So there's no way in hell i'm gonna deal with that having to connect every 24 hours bull.

That's a very good question, whether it'll lock you out of your game once it reconnects or simply allow you to keep playing. Unless Microsoft is feeling suicidal you'll be able to keep playing your game once it reconnects.

This internet thing is so problematic. What happens at 24:01 with no connection? Do you exit immediately out of the game? If so, do you get to save? Can you simply not start a game after 24:01 w/o internet? Does some annoying warning message pop up as you countdown to 24 hours?

You can play offline for 24 hours. When you go over that limit, the game will stop working until you go online again. That can be a day, or a year later. Doesn't matter. Whenever you do log in, the game will work again. That's my simple understanding of it.

It's a bunch of convoluted crap for the user, but yeah.

If you buy a game that sucks and the publisher isn't enabling trade ins then you're screwed. Often if there's two games coming out in consecutive weeks that I want I'll buy the first, finish it quick and then trade it for the next to make it more affordable. Now I have to worry about if the publisher is enabling it and if any local stores are participating.

I'm barely even interested in E3 anymore, if this is where gaming is headed then it's just not for me anymore. Once the servers go offline the console is just a brick, no retro XB1 games in 20 years. Utterly ridiculous.

I hate the Steam analogy.

For it to be the same as steam live would need to sell brand new digital games cheaper than the physical copy, but it doesn't, often the digital version is dearer.
