Here's an article that helps explain why the Steam comparisons are ridiculous -

"But Steam Does The Same! And You Can't Trade iOS Games!

These two ridiculous counter-arguments have popped up in defence of Xbox One not allowing you to trade in or gift games, etc etc. It's not a 1-to-1 example, so it doesn't work as a counter-argument."

Dead Space on Steam: $20.00
Dead Space on X360: $14.99

Dragon Age Origins on Steam: $20.00
Dragon Age Orgins on X360: $15.00

Skyrim on S: $30
Skyrim on X360: $30

Two deals I've gotten from both: Got saints row the third off of steam for ten when it was forty (steam). Got MW2 for ten when it was thirty (X360).

When it comes to AAA titles, these two companies do not operate that differently. His argument is poor. He's basically saying they're different because Microsoft might charge more, which is what he accussed people who used the Steam argument of doing.

Taken broadly, there is no way in hell console games are as cheap as PC digital distributors like GOG, Steam, Greenman gaming, Desura, etc. There is far more competition in that space.  Prices also drop faster on PC and games are generally $10 cheaper at release. Also, Steam and GOG holiday/bundle sales are insanely cheap.

But having upgrade PCs is also pretty expensive over time.

It's not actually as expensive as a lot of people suggest unless you want to stay at the top of the line, which is not neccessary for gaming.

I'm running on a 4 year old PC with 3 GB of memory right now and I haven't run into a game that I can't run, nor have I even had to run a game on minimum settings. It was only recently that I couldn't run some games at max settings.

I spent $1500 on my PC but I won't have to upgrade it possibly until the end of this new generation.

Yeah, the sales are what make Steam great, but who's to say that the x1 won't have them?

I'm running a five-year old PC w/ 6GB of memory and haven't really tried playing any newer PC games on it. It's my motherboard; it needs to be replaced w/ a newer one, but that means new CPU and RAM as well.

If they do it will take much of the sting out of DRM, but I would be extremely surprised. It is easier for a third-party distributor like Amazon to hold a sale than a proprietary platform like Xbox. Also, nothing in Microsoft's behavior suggests they are going to allow any kind of discounts or give up any control over prices and policies if they don'y absolutely have to.

They don't have to. Steam doesn't grant sales and cheap prices out of kindness. They have stiff competition. MS has Sony, that's it.

Unless hackers find a way to bypass all of that Xbox One's bull****, I won't buy it.

Steam is competing with Amazon, Greenman Gaming, Gamers Gate, Gamefly and so many other digital stores.

Microsoft is competing against no one.

Digital is the future. It makes sense on every level, especially if you can back up your games on disc. It's cheaper for every party involved, quicker, easier and more widely available.

Prefer discs just cause I don't have to worry about my account getting hacked.

I like cases, artwork, and looking at them on the shelves. And most importantly concerning consoles, servers can close and various titles aren't guaranteed to be available digitally again.

I realize it's the future, but I still prefer physical.  I could read all the books I own online as well, but I prefer the fresh smell of books and holding it in my hands, overall, I prefer physical - CD's/Vinyls, etc.

I'll be shocked if the prices of games don't go up at least ten or twenty bucks in the next few years. This whole relation towards "used game sales". Not everyone can afford to purchase every game new and I know most of my friends prefer to wait a few months, then wait till it's twenty or thirty bucks less.

It's funny though, X1 is keen on using the words publishers more often, in relevance to their recent info, yet they're designing it in a way that the publishers will take advantage of this.

And LP's just sound better than CD's or digital files, right?

*busts out his laser disc player, 8 track deck, and real-printed newspaper*

Yep.

I remember the uber-resistance to DVDs.  I worked in a video rental store from 96-99, and I would find something like 20 to 1 resistance on DVDs.  People had their VHS's, didn't need to change.

How many people buying music STILL pine for long boxes for their CD's?
