Doesn't the answer to OP just boil down to "are you on- or off-host?"

I can't seem to get the hang of the Valkyrie; then again I'm quite a new player. I've played the fury loads and really like the playstyle - the tactics mentioned elsewhere on this thead is what makes her fun to play for me. Stuff like:

- AH, teleport into crowd of mooks, see them breakdance and glitter, thowthowthow boom.

- DC boss, run somewhere else, kill things, come back and finish the boss (or keep mooks off your teammates)

- AF w. Geth Scanner, Hardcover next to entrance to room with teammate, when you see the scion through the wall in red about to enter it will normally almost in range of your AF through the wall, lean out, throw, boom, stagger, teammate finishes off scion.

- AF, teleport close to slow boss, throw, BOOM, teleport back. Rinse and repeat.

- DC banshee, kite her away from teammates whilst pelleting her, with care you can teleport away from any badness she thorws at you.

I used to play as Furrycane but the Indra + ultralights is really good fun too and useful to taking down shields before going in close. I like the added range + better headshots it gives...

Knowing where on the map it's possible to teleport through adds fun. Especially with geth scanner.

I play the Valkyrie more like a brawler. She's almost unbeatable in CQC. With a Wraith and specced for full melee and debuffs, she kicks all sorts of ass, while being tough enough to withstand blows the Fury could not. Her dodge is also more reliable and more fluid. I'll never understand why people think cheesing it with a Reegar is the only viable playstyle for her. I've yet to use either it, or the Warp glitch, and I still dominate Platinum. She almost feels a little OP.

For me, the Fury is a lot of running and teleporting, wondering how I'm not dead yet. Lots of explosions, but I get the feeling if I stop moving, it's over. Like a shark. Unfortunately, sometimes the enemy straight up cheats, with Marauders elbowing me from 4 feet away or just her teleport not working (esp. the forward teleport) when I need it most. Those moments of powerlessness, when the game just decides you're going to die and there's nothing you can do about it, blow.

So pretty much, this comes down to survivability for me. It's just that the Valkyrie happens to be more survivable and do comparable damage. My choice is obvious.

I thought the Valkyrie was originally released as a training class? One would work to master her skill/power tree with the end goal of using the Fury on Gold/Platinum..
Pretty obvious if you ask me.. The tech-armor, higher health + barriers, vanilla power Warp w/less alarming combo explosions, basic slide mechanics working up to teleportation, etc.
Like training wheels.

Hey Stryfe - would you mind sharing your build details / strategy for the melee around ? I'd like to know how to play this kit. I specced my Valkyrie for full melee just now but I found that I kept taking fire whilst trying to activate the heavy melee whilst it seemed like the light melee was a bit weak. Or am I not doing it right ? :)

Sure thing. Warning, though, I like to ramble. There's a Tl;dr at the end.

Build

6/5/6/3/6

Tech Armor - Either (I chose Durability, but if you detonate often, go with the other), Melee Damage, Power Recharge
Warp - Detonate, Expose
Annihilation Field - Radius, Damage Taken, Shield Drain
Fitness - All Melee

The final rank in Tech Armor is really up to you. I chose Power Recharge because I like to bring a secondary weapon then never use it (I forget...). Honestly, the skill points there would probably be better spent on maxing out Warp for the extra debuff and BE damage.

Strategy/Tips

          1) Close quarters is where you'll be most of the time. Bring a shotgun, or some other close range weapon with melee mods (like a Talon). I like to use the Wraith or Raider on her. Keep Tech Armor active, detonating it in emergencies, like a Phantom preparing to stab you or something. Annihilation Field should be kept on as much as possible. Most of your deaths will probably come from you not noticing it's off.

          2) You'll be using your gun most of the time, but a Warp BE can give you back all of your shields if one of the affected enemies had any. I like to goad Phantoms into starting their melee animation before backing up and detonating them. Once those barriers are down they usually turn invisible and run for cover, making them extremely easy to kill. Bosses and other heavy units are the only ones I'd advise Warping as soon as you can, even if they're out of AF range. That double debuff from AF and Warp can make them go down much faster. Plus, a Warp BE is a guaranteed stagger on most bosses if they haven't been staggered recently.

          3) Her melee, while very powerful, leaves her pretty vulnerable. I use it on mooks and occasionally bosses that aren't paying attention to me (it's pretty powerful). Would not recommend using it too much on Platinum, but it's very useful for shutting down hyper aggressive enemies like the Geth Hunter/Pyro and Cerberus Dragoon. If it doesn't kill them outright, the AF will shortly after. If they had shields, they're yours now, so you should be in no danger of dying. Also, at the end of every wave, when the wave budget is empty, every enemy becomes hyper aggressive. Those with a melee attack will do everything in their power to hit you with it. If they surround you when this happens, her melee can be the difference between life and death.

TL;DR - You're mobile, very tough to kill, and have lots of advantages to being in CQC (Shield drain, auto-debuff, BE Priming for Warp Ammo, etc.). Staying in the enemy's face is the best place for you to be. Use Warp BE's as a way to get back most of your shields, stagger bosses/groups, apply double debuff to bosses, or finish an encounter with a trash mob. Use Melee to shut down hyper aggressive units or save ammo on trash mobs. Try not to use it in open areas. Pay attention to the status of Annihilation Field.

seriously kids, why do you think self-assured casual players get on BSN to troll and provoke you? Because they find your fervor and self-proclaimed genius to be funny. Get out of my thread or learn to relax and that your whole life doesn't hinge on proving yourself daily to BSN. If I am talking to you, you know it. /rant

Valkyrie because Asari.

Also she's unstoppable due to the asari dodge and the evo drain in AF , you just spam a heavy quantities of BEs on a banshee and a well played dodge-attack can save you from being hug. Talon, hurricane or CSMG to make her a trailblazer.

I still stand by the Valkyrie, but I played with Knockingbr4in the other day, and I gotta say, the Fury wins because of the same reason a Drell would: She's faster. Granted, he's a better player than I am and I spent a lot of time trying to melee people (unsuccessfully, I might add. They were dying too quick...), but still, the faster you get to an enemy, the more you score. I'm assuming that's what we're measuring by here, since "We won" isn't enough for BSN.

^ He meant the Warp-glitch, man. No class can compete with downing Platinum bosses in half a second.
