2006 Casey Hudson Interview: Mass Effect Was Going to be a Self-Contained Adventure

I was recently digging around the interwebs, and I came across this old interview from before ME1's release. This is one of the more detailed interviews from ME1's development, and it was interesting to read about what was planned for the game and the larger series at that point. He discusses a number of features that weren't implemented, including a customizable Mako and the ability to keep playing after the main plot was finished.

I was most intrigued by this bit:

IGO: Why was the decision made to spread the story across three games? Will we be seeing all three installments on the Xbox 360? What about PC?

CH: It’s not quite that we’re spreading the story across three games. Instead we’ve designed a story for the first Mass Effect game with its own self-contained, spectacular adventure – complete with a satisfying and definitive ending (several of them actually).


He goes on to say that the plot of future games would tie into ME1's story in "unexpected" ways. Overall, the way he describes the trilogy sounds a lot more loosely connected than they later tried to make it.

Between this and the way that ME1's sequel hook doesn't fit with the rest of the game, I'm starting to wonder if the original idea was to resolve the Reaper plot at the end of the first game, with the sequels having their own self-contained adventures (akin to the Indiana Jones or Back to the Future trilogies), but there was some kind of last minute change of plans late in ME1's development.

Well, that final scene between Shepard, Anderson, Udina, and the Council, provided you saved them, looked like it was put together at the very last minute.

I'm glad they didn't do it like that. However, I'm disappointed with that they ended up doing.

I think Casey should stay away from Mass Effect from now on.

Like in John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness, the ultimate goal wasn't to kill all the baddies but prevent their entry. Shep finally broke the cycle, leaving the door closed, so it seemed odd that (s)he was still on the warpath during the last conversation w/ Anderson and Udina.

ME3's handling of the extinction threat built up in ME and ME2 left something to be desired. Now there were lesser Reapers to kick around as opposed to infinite copies of Sovereign who could hobble an Alliance fleet by itself. I also felt that the special attention Earth received detracted greatly from the stakes as they were presented w/ the Protheans in ME.

Interesting. If they re-wrote it so that Sovereign was the only Reaper then they could easily have dealt with that plot in the first game. I'd love for a BioWare employee to talk about what was suposed to happen with the series at some point. Obviously EA buying them changed things, but I'd want to know what was originally planned and what was scrapped.
