Okay, here’s the thing. I love RPGs. For the most part, I’ve preferred to play the Fantasy variety but on occasion, I
can deal with Sci-fi as well (as in the Fallout series, for example). I’m in love with Dragon Age at the moment but after the fifth play-through, I’m half-looking for something to do until the expansion.

Because I’ve never been a huge Sci-fi fan, I’ve somehow missed out on the whole Mass Effect thing. Never played the first one and had no clue about this one. But now I see this is available in a while and I’m thinking, maybe this is something for me? So if anyone has a moment, could they possibly help me out and see if it’s something I might enjoy? I’m looking primarily at the sequel here, oogling it on Steam actually.

How much RPG is this game? Does the storyline have depth and are there NPCs that you can get to know and interact with, beyond just a shooting buddy that runs along and attacks things when you do? Completely disregarding the Sci-fi theme, what other RPG is this the most like, if any at all? Is the character creator innovative and resourceful? How is the ingame art design? I’ve been looking all over but all I can seem to find
are some trailers and previews, and nothing that really helps me out here. I don’t want to waste my money but if this is anything in the vicinity of the Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Dragon Age, or similar, I feel like I might be missing out. I’m looking through pages now trying to find information but I’d really love to hear someone’s personal input here, from someone who’s played the game.

Is it more storyline or more action? I have a nasty feeling it might be a bit too much like an FPS for me and I’m not very good at those types of games. Fallout 3 was stretching it but I loved the world and story so much I could deal with the action :)

I’d ask one of my friends but no one’s tried it out. My apologies if it’s impertinent of me to come here and ask these questions but I’m curious. Thanks for any help!

Mass Effect is RPG light. There are many choices to make, and many characters to get to know. The story is a strong focus, but there is definitely a lot of action too. The customization aspects of a traditional RPG are somewhat limited, but are still there.

I suppose Fallout 3 is an okay comparison.

Mass Effect's greatest strength is its story and it has as deep of a universe/lore as DA. You talk to characters between missions (kinda like DA). Choices are a big part of the game. Its also a very cinematic game.

The combat isn't perfect but it depends on what class you pick. Many side quests have their own planet you can explore but they are repetitive and are basically empty open-world vehicle sections.

If I had to compare it to another game...maybe System Shock series. Or Deus Ex. Those games featured lone protagonists though, unlike ME which has a team.

It does sound like something I might like :) Thanks guys. I'm looking at Mass Effect on Steam right now, it's pretty cheap. Could play it while waiting for evil Return to Ostagar, haha.

Just so worried I'll get it and it doesn't fit my playstyle at all. It does sound so tempting the way you describe it though :D Any thief class that can actually open chests or locks and hoard stuff?

Quite a bit.

Does the storyline have depth and are there NPCs that you can get to know and interact with, beyond just a shooting buddy that runs along and attacks things when you do?

Very much so, after each main mission, there is a new conversation with each of the NPCs. You get to know a lot, such as their backstory and motives. It is a big part of the game.

Completely disregarding the Sci-fi theme, what other RPG is this the most like, if any at all?

Not many are even close to it IMO. Not that there aren't other great games, just not ones that are too similar to ME.

Is the character creator innovative and resourceful? How is the ingame art design?

without giving too much away, you get to choose your "history", can custom build your look, and there are 6 classes to choose from that each play differently. You don't have to be a Soldier. The in game art was not the greatest, but if you plan on getting ME1, and E2, the in game art looks excellent in ME2. There are still some very awesome views.

As for other great games, ME is my favorite of all time, better than Baldur's Gate(series) and The Witcher.

Is it more storyline or more action?

The Storyline is the biggest part of the game. There is a lot of action, but it isn't always non stop. At times, it is mixed in very well, and it is something they wanted to do better in ME2(mixing in action with story).

I was going to mentione that, yeah. It is super cheap most of the time. And that way if you like it, you can play through and then move onto ME1.

Soldier=fighter

Engineer=Rogue/thief/hacker

Adept=Mage

And then the three Multi class's

At 20$ its a bargin.Look at Jade Empire as well...Mabey even Kotor.

But then again I'm a 10 year plus Bioware fan(proudly so)

Think about it...20$ is a movie and quick eats now.Yea its worth the cost.

Basically, the game's classes hit up 3 roles: Firearms, Biotics(Basically casting), and Tech.

Soldier: Full Firearms, access to all guns.

Adept: Full Biotics, access to full range of powers(Except, in ME2, for class-specifics)

Engineer: Full Tech, access to all Tech powers.

Vanguard: Firearms/Biotics. Has shotgun training, all biotics except(I think) Singularity(AoE, sucks everything to it.) and Stasis, which is sorta like Force Field.(In ME2, also has a sort of teleport/charge.)

Infiltrator: Firearms/Tech. Has sniper rifle training, a lot of tech powers. Levels in certain tech powers also allow you to unlock a variety of containers.(In ME2, has an invisibility power.)

Sentinel: Tech/Biotics. Mostly a support character, has access to both tech and biotic powers.

I can't remember every class ability in ME2, so... Also, note all classes have pistols training in ME1, at least. Biotics tend to be more about controlling the battlefield than damage, allowing you to actually move enemies. Lines things up for damage.

Well, thanks to you guys, I've bought it now :> Currently downloading through Steam, can't wait to try it out.

Sort of considering Adept right now, not sure yet... maybe Engineer, hmm... If it's as good as you guys suggest, I'll probably play through more than once anyway :D

Enjoy it. My favorite class was the Sentinel, because I love biotics and tech attacks. But I enjoyed Adept just as much. They made significant improvements to each class, so if don't like one in ME1, don't discount playing it in ME2. My order completely changed.

Just think. When you're done with an ME1 playthrough, you'll be able to go to ME2 on the 26th with far less wait than us addicts. :)

Gah... the first huge worm-thingie that popped out of the ground freaked me out so bad. I've had a phobia about those kind of beasties ever since I saw some movie when I was a wee girl... ugh...

And yes, I think I've timed my new obsession quite well :D I play Mass Effect now until the sequel arrives, then I play that until the Dragon Age expansion is released, it's a total rush :D You poor guys, having waited so long... I'm kind of happy I only found it now or I think I'd have been tearing my hair out by now.

Nassegris, Glad to see you got ME1, I also picked it up after Dragon Age, wanted more awesome story's like DA, people told me all Bioware's were like that, and yeah.. few months later... yeah, ME2 CE pre-ordered, doing playthroughs like mad to get saves ready for ME2, pushing DA back for it.

Wrex.the.next.spectre why you hate soldiers so badly? Did my first pt as a soldier (well 2, he's 56, waiting for insanity to unlock for his final pt and his way to 60), doing an adept now on hardcore to unlock insanity, and they feel TOTALLY different, which makes me want to recommend them both to everybody, having 2 games in the same package is epic win as far as I'm concerned

Hehe, bara fint här :D

I usually end up playing a mage or thief in my first play-through in a game, so I went with Adept here... though I'm kind of frustrated by all the stuff I can't break into due to low electronics so I have to try another class for sure on my next try. This character though, I somehow managed to get her to look just like Audrey Hepburn. It actually took me an hour or so to figure out how to work the character creator system but you can make some lovely faces there. She's very pretty and I never want to abandon her :D

So happy not to just sit around beat my head against the wall while waiting for Dragon Age expansions and DLC, heeee...

Speaking of DLC, I heard there were some for ME? Are they worth it? :)

First one for ME is free, Bring Down The Sky. I really liked that one. Pinnacle Station, the 2nd one, is 5 dollars, and only got bad reviews, better to skip that one I believe, I know I will

Indeed, Bring Down the Sky is good and free, Pinnacle Station isn't worth it.

You know that you can just bring a tech party member in order to unlock chests, etc. right? As long as they have the required skill, you'll use their skill to open stuff. :) Personally, I always kept Garrus in my squad because of this. So yeah, you won't need to change your class if you like it.

Wow, you can? I'm totally making him my new best buddy now then :D Thanks! I had no idea...

And thanks for the info, I'll get Bring Down the Sky then, though not right now, way too concentrated on driving around in this annoying bouncing vehicle...

Haha, right, the Mako's physics are a bit wonky. :P

Any member with electronics/decryption will do. I always max out these skills first, so I can open up everything. Handy. Just remember that decryption and electronics are two different skills. I think decryption opens up locked containers, while electronics deals with computer terminals. Either way, you should get both. :)

Keep Garrus, Kaiden, or Tali around: any of them can have the tech points to open stuff, but you need to invest the points to get there.  I suggest Ashley or Wrex to round out your combat strength, too - with skill points in the right places, they're good damage sponges.

Tali is the best at tech, but Garrus is also good. Take Garrus if you want a squishy sniper, or Tali if you want a shotgun wielder with ridiculous shielding.

With my Adept I ran through the game with Wrex and Tali, and they make a fantastic team.
