Sooo... possibly a weird  question, but...

Do any of you assign your multiplayer characters personalities? I like to view my Krogan shaman as a cool old guy who's seen it all and probably fought most of it, and my demolisher as a freewheeler who ADORES anything that makes a good boom.  My geth engineer has trouble figuring out those troubling things organics call emotions and my fury is more than willing to shoot/warp/annihilate/punch anything that annoys her...

Yeah lol.......my fury is a fiery irish redhead who just loves to make things go boom lol:whistle::D

Much like SerBiggs, I'm a writer at heart, so it's almost impossible for me to take a blank slate of a character and not start developing some sort of name and personality for them subconsciously.

My favorite/most played kits usually even get some type of short background to flesh them out even more.

But mostly it's just giving them personalities. It's fun for me.

There's even a few who actually get shipped together because Reasons. Those reasons largely being that I'm a geeky weirdo, so there you go. Image IPB

Nala Apone vas Sulaco. She took her name from some old earth film. She hopes to some day have something called a pulse rifle. But, until then, she makes do with a Javelin.

Just a few of the little details about my Quarian Infiltrator. :)

Sigh, I assign nearly ALL of my characters personalities, and names that means something to me... the characters I only played to complete a challenge but ended up NOT liking them.. are merely "scrubs" .. .. sure they all have specific names.. but I don't give them a personality.. um.. I should stop talking now.

Wow, you are really big into splitting hairs.  Yes, Hovertank 3D http://en.wikipedia....ki/Hovertank_3D developed with the Wolfenstein 3D engine by the developers of Wolfenstein 3D.  FWIW, as someone who worked in game development back in that era, everyone credits Wolf3D as the first, even though there were other not made by id before it.

Either way, you are correct, Mass Effect is not a first person shooter, or a third person shooter (can we just agree to call them all "Shooters"?).  It is a Role Playing Game (RPG) as I originally said.

I'm sure many around here would argue that ME3 is more third person shooter with RPG elements =P

Really it has elements of both. It's not a pure RPG nor is it a pure third person shooter.

Hrm, not so much splitting hairs, as insisting that your point of view is the correct one, despite what anyone else might say.

The Mass Effect games have more elements in common with Neverwinter Nights (oh, look, a BioWare game and a modern RPG) than they do Battlefield (a pure shooter) or HALO (a shooter with a "story").

Might I point out that you are on a forum thread ABOUT the story aspect of the game?  I am not sure what you mean  by "around here", but I am sure you could start a shooter thread and get people to agree with you.  That is what the internet is for, to find people who agree with you so that you can insist that other people are wrong.  Heck, there are multiple websites dedicated to the idea that pancakes BELONG on the heads of bunnies.  (Seriously, go look it up. :D)

So, rather than insist that we bow to your "One True Way" to play the game, you can just enjoy the game your way, and we will enjoy it ours.

Clearly because the game has RPG elements that negates everything else about the game. It's not a third person shooter despite you shooting guns in the third person view, and clearly I'm insisting that everybody bow to my point of view because I pointed that out.

Video games are allowed to be more than one genre these days. As I already said in the last post Mass Effect is not a pure RPG nor is it a pure shooter, but rather it is a hybrid of shooter and RPG. Saying it is not either is just silly.

What it isn't is a first person shooter, so no it's not like Halo or Battlefield, but it is like Gears of War in a lot of ways.

Oh look, that's a third person shooter =P

There's no roleplay while actually playing the game, at least not on xbox. The closest I've been to observing it happen was the kid who forgot his mic was on so we could all hear him making additional sound effects.

Well, you're in a thread about the story aspects of the game insisting that it is a third peron shooter, so, yeah, you are insisting that we agree with you.  Seriously, let us agree to disagree, and each go our separate ways.  Otherwise, feel free to read on.

A shooter is a shooter is a shooter, no matter the aspect it is viewed from.  The first shooter I played had separate analog sliders for X and Y axis and a single button for "fire", but that was developed back in the '60s so probably before you were gaming.  Still, it was a shooter game, and the graphics were a 1'x1' square for the "gun" and a 1"x1" square for the skeet you were supposed to shoot.

This is an RPG, because, if you remove all of the action sequences (the shooter aspecs), it is still an amazing and award winning game.  If you remove all of the story and decission making capability, it is a "meh" game and completely interchangable with the bajillion other shooters on the market.  I don't seem to recall any angst about them changing the way that combat worked between games (something that caused a riot for HALO fans when porting from XBox to PC), but change the way the fans think the story should end, and you had a full on revolt.

Agree's with guy saying that Mass Effect is a shooter/rpg hybrid that leans one way or the other depending on your point of view. Tells me that it's only an RPG and says I'm the one who's being difficult.

Seems legit.

Also, the MP of this game has very little story or RP in it and it's survived for 15 months and got 5 DLCs, so...

Good job BioWare on a solid third person shooter in your supposed non third person shooter game?

A lot are misunderstanding the difference between roleplaying in character, and creating a static background on an otherwise blank canvas. Some are just simply not satisfied with zero investment in their character.

Almost every one of my MP kits is a 'character' to me with a unique name, a back story, preferred loadout, tactics, etc. I've used several of them as original characters in my fanfics, actually. When I play them in MP I imagine that I'm reenacting battles they fought during the Reaper War, so that when I'm writing about them in the post-ME3 galaxy I can really see them as combat veterans too. :)
