^ can be quite a bit, i had an Radeon 7970 before i upgraded again and gained about 10 fps or more with the 12.8 or something like that ( don't really remember ) driver so it can make a difference yes.

That however was because it went from terribad drivers to good drivers.

You're average driver update gives performance increase of about 3-5% tops and most of the time not even that, but merely minimizes other problems like artifacting, stuttering or crashes.
Also, new drivers can sometimes mess with OCs or generally not work out for a system/program. The last driver update for example caused a lot of issues for the GTX 600 series when playing Battlefield 3, so most people had to roll back to earlier driver versions to play the game without issues.

Can go better, doesn't have to and in some cases it makes things worse.

nVidia has more money to throw around? Say what?

nVidia is a graphics card company. AMD makes Graphics cards AND CPUs. How do you figure that nVidia has more cash flow?

But on the topic of drivers, I've never understood why people feel the need to update their drivers constantly. If the game works fine with the drivers you have, is there any real reason to update the drivers?

Yup. Believe it or not they have more money than AMD. I saw it awhile back. I haven't checked on it recently but AMD also had a significant amount of debt while Nvidia didn't. AMD doesn't sell better than Nvidia cards and they're also second to Intel in the CPU market.

As for drivers, that's usually when I upgrade them. if they give big performance increases to a game or fix specific issues, I'm going to get that driver immediately. It doesn't make sense to play a game at 40fps if a simple driver allows you to play it at 50fps. I always manually clean my registries out installing new drivers just so it's a 100% new clean install.

Beta drivers are a little more tricky as they're not windows certified. That's likely where you're going to run into driver issues.

specs for the 770 were "leaked" and apparently it's about 10% faster than a 7970Ghz but starts at $390 (7970Ghz starts around $450).

Hmmm... I might have to try and trade in my 670's for the 770's if that is true. That is a really great price.

I would wait. AMDs new 9000 series is scheduled to arrive in this year and the rumored specifications of the 9970, if true, will blow the GTX 770 out of the water. And unless they aim to compete with the GTX 780, that GPU will be in a similar price range like the GTX 770.

Ah yes, judging a product/drivers before they ever come into existence. Very reasonable, yes, yes.

Nevermind you completely missed the point I was making, which was "wait". GTX 670 SLI has more then enough power to play everything on highest settings for the next two years at the very least. Throwing your money away by upgrading already is wasteful at best.

But hey, we got to denounce AMD drivers that don't even exist, much more important of course ...

Unconditional extremes aren't viable arguments. They are fanboy'isms/hater'isms. But you seem fond of those anyway ...

Uh wat?

I have a single 570, so yeah its a fine time to upgrade.  Dunno where you're getting the 670 sli bit from.

Second, its okay to judge future amd drivers on past amd drivers.  Doesn't really have much to do with the hardware anyways, it could get better tomorrow.  IF they do get up to Nvidia's standard someday then I'll consider them for the next upgrade, but I'm not gonna just wait around for that off chance.  I'm sticking with Nvidia for now, period, (if preferences make fanboys we're all roger rabbits), and Nvidia's cycle starts now, not when AMD catches up, so I upgrade now.

Simple.  :)

I was OBVIOUSLY talking with the one I had just quoted. But I suppose you just took my post out of context and used it to signal your discomfort with AMD.

Very thoughtful. I always enjoy my posts being hijacked. And since the obvious thing isn't quite as obvious as I would think, here's a tip: I was sarcastic. I do not actually enjoy it when my posts are being hijacked for no reason but petty hatespeech.

Ultimately Radeon vs GeForce is pretty irrelevant - unless AMD or nVidia has really screwed a driver release, chances are cards of comparable tier will have very similar performance. I've tended towards AMD simply because they tend to try and go a price point lower and the first card I ever bought (I say "I" - more like my dad bought it so that our family computer could actually run MoH: Pacific Assault when I got it for Christmas) was a Radeon 9550.

When you quote somebody and then directly refer to them as "you" its easy to get the impression you're talking to them and not somebody else.  Or maybe thats just me.

Neofelis was definitely talking to me at first. I think you might have gotten a little mixed up there

I think I will wait until the 800 generation, because going to the 700 generation will only get me about 20% gains in performance, for about $100 more than what I spent on my cards.

If I had something from the 500's I would buy the 770 in an instant, though! It is a pretty good card for its price right now.

I also agree with everyone in their preference for Nvidia drivers. I have owned AMD before, and while it wasn't a bad experience by any means I have really grown accustomed to Nvidia. I will probably stick with them in the future unless AMD releases a really good deal.
