Thanks for the explanation, David, intersting stuff.

And, by the way, this:

your will must be insidious.

snippet (arguably taken only slightly out of context) is enough to slay a bagillion "Is Blood Magic Evil?" threads that poke up around here almost weekly.

So I am guessing a person's body is one giant voodoo doll but w/o the pins?

Kinda like Blood-bending in the Last Airbender then, if to take another example...

Hmm. I guess a blood mage can force those under their control to say what they want, even if they're not really mind controlling them, then.

The temptation to sig this is even greater.

Ouch.

I watch this show called Avatar:The Last Air Bender with my kids where ... well skipping to the point some Water Benders have the ability to Bend blood - even on a children's show the results of someone's body being forced to do things is pretty horrific.

edited to add -> Ninja'd AGAIN!!!  It is a plague I say! Image IPBImage IPBImage IPB

I think the blood mage manipulates the blood of the vitcim and not necessarily his mind / spirit. So it would seem like the victim would still be conscious, but his body would be manipulated against his will. Unless of course manipulating the blood also leads to the manipulation of organs, in which case the mind would also be controlled. Sounds like a pleasant experience.

This is it. Someone who is under the control of a blood mage is having their body controlled but not their mind. They are trapped in their body, unable to speak or act, and could indeed be forced to kill themselves -- there is no such thing as a "save vs. charm" idea.

This fact is not really consistent, however. There is evidence of some blood mages having the ability to exert influence over someone's mind -- almost a form of hypnosis, really, where the target is not controlled so much as they earnestly believe what the blood mage wishes them to believe. This is probably a seperate power from the normal ability to just control someone outright, and not simply a spell they can whip off on a moment's notice.

You can read that as "I'm leaving my options open", if you like. Image IPB I'd like to get into a more complete exploration of what blood mages are capable of in the future -- not the least of which is the summoning of demons. Ultimately I think it's a difference of a regular mage who's exploring blood magic and one who's dedicated and has researched the possibilities. Even so, either way I think you can see why regular people might find this idea very frightening, and the idea of a blood mage gaining access to a someone in a position of power very threatening. Blood magic isn't inherently evil, but the temptation to do evil when you have the power to bend others to your will must be insidious.

Amen. By writing this post, Mr Gaider, you've gained a mindless minion who will answer to whatever you command.

All hail Blood -Subtle- Control.

In Code Geass, Lelouch's victims smile while performing their orders. It is heavily implied that his mind-controlled minions enjoy the orders they are given. Hell, in the first episode, he orders a squad of soldiers to kill themselves:
Lelouch: Lelouch vi Britannia commands you! All of you, die!

Squad Leader: *laughs* Yes, your highness!

Entire Squad: *Shoots self in head.*

Lelouch: *Evil grin.*

I can has Mass Blood Control in the expansion Bioware KTHXBAI!

Hey devs, will we get the chance to use Blood Control in conversations like Dominate in Vampire Bloodlines?

Oooh I hope in Awakenings they will extend the Blood Mage specialisation and let us summon demons and make our enemies slit their throats. My main character is a good guy but he falls for the temptation of power.

Ah, control of the body but not necessarily the mind unless the blood mage has truly specialized in the field, basically? Hmm, what about First Enchanter Irving, assuming Uldred was using blood magic on him? The First Enchanter did seem to have the strength to resist whatever it was that was being done to him - enough to communicate with the PC before the Uldred fight anyway.

My apologies for the necropost, but isn't Mental Resist--which, if I recall correctly, applies to a blood mage's blood control--pretty close to what a "save vs. charm" is? Of course, there is the fact that it results in pretty severe circulatory system damage if resisted, but.
