If you look at pure gaming numbers, disregarding genera or platform, women make up almost 50% of the game playing population. Granted, a lot of those number are coming from smart phones... but nonetheless.

I think you may be surprised how many girls play on Xbox. The girls I know who play, tend to keep their mic off, simply to avoid juvenile male harassment. Hell, I am a 31 year old guy, and I tend to keep my mic off to avoid juvenile male harassment. Xbox kids are brutal.

On a more serious note, I have experienced far less gender-based harassment and awkward remarks playing ME3 compared to other multiplayer games. I think it's because the playerbase tends to be older and/or a tad more laid back in comparison.
