As Morrigan says, she is still human, though she has the *appearance* of an animal.  Successful pregnancy of woman and dog wouldn't be able to happen.

In the Eberron campaign setting of D&D, a pregnant changeling is locked into her current form at the moment of conception. Basically, if the changeling is in the form of an elven woman, she is stuck as an elven woman for nine months. The funny thing is that male changelings in female form can get pregnant, and also get mode-locked into female form.



It's heavily implied that most changelings are bisexual by default.



Slightly off-topic, I am running a large game where each player character is a changeling called the Cabinet of Faces. The PCs personalities range from opportunists who freely shapeshift to exploit other people to one PC who is ashamed of her changeling heritage and is heavily closeted (she does not want anyone to know that she's a changeling).

The baby is a part of the mother, as they are linked physically. As such, the magic would shift both, and the fetus would turn into a wolf-fetus for the duration of the spell.

Now one more question to discuss... what about a male human shapeshipting into for example a wolf female? Can this be possible... to shapeshift a sex? This opens even more possibilities of getting pregnant while in animal form and returning to male after.

While an interesting concept, I don't believe it would be possible to do that. Once the man shifted back into human form, the fetus would simplky dissolve into his flesh. Now, if he were to remain in wolf-form the whole period of pregnancy, perhaps that would be possible.

Heh, what an interesting question. I would say the pregnant shapeshifter would be unable to change shape until the pregnancy had either been terminated or carried to term.

A pregnant shapeshifter is twice as gimped.

All kidding aside it's the mothers power that is using magic to maintain the form. So I would assume the same magic is changing the baby to be compatible with it's new enviroment. Once the baby leaves the mothers body the magic ceases to function and the baby reverts to it's human form.

Also, the woman's genes would not shift to those of the animal, so she could not be impregnated by a non-humanoid.

IMO, pregnant human is stuck in human form until the baby is delivered. Of course, it's all "magic" so maybe the baby just goes off into limbo if the mother is able to shift forms.

As bizarre as that notion is, that exact scenario occurs in the Mabinogion, a collection of Welsh mythological tales written (probably) in the 14th century.  It occurs in the story Math, Son of Mathonwy.

Just goes to show that we moderns don't have a monopoly on imagination.

Hah! It happened in old Norse mythology as well. Loki transformed himself into a mare to lure away a stallion, and ended up pregnant. He couldn't transform back until after the pregnancy was brought to term. The horse that came out of it, Sleipnir, he gave to Odin. It had eight legs, and could run as fast over the sky and across water as it could run across land.
There are stones depicting an eight-legged horse from the 8th century.

More nightmare thoughts:

If a pregnant female shape-shifter shifted into another mammalian form, the fetus might shift as well. But what happens if she tries to shift into a form that is not mammalian? (If you're thinking about the shape shifter options in game, the third form is insectoid, or technically arachnid, and therefore egg-laying)
