I think it's more confusing NOT to show a femshep. I didn't buy Mass Effect for the longest time because I didn't think you could play as a female. I finally bought it at the urging of my friend and was surprised that you could be a woman.
I thought the same thing! It was a pleasant surprise too.
I am right on board this train. I found out pretty soon after ME1 was released for the PC but before that I don't think I had a clue. It's odd... they give us three love interests and Jennifer Hale, but you wouldn't know it for the advertisements, except for the character generation screen and Bioware's reputation as being awesome to their female audience. Then again, as has been said, they paid that hunky Dutch model guy and they are milking it. Can't blame them for that.
Honestly, though in some ways I frown at it, in other ways, I'm like, "Awesome. Now I'm not as spoiled as I would've been," you know? Because my experience will not be like that. I'll be watching a woman in those scenes and hearing Hale and quite probably picking different lines. So even though I've seen some of the game already, when I get it I will make it my own and it will be even better. That first meeting with Thane, for me, will have a whole other feeling about it when I'm listening to Hale. A far more delicious one.

The actress for femshep actually knows
how to apply proper tone and inflection in her dialogue. Default shep
is practically monotone and almost sounds like he's reading from a book.
For
the best example in quality of their voice acting in ME1, go to the
scene where you finally get the Normandy for yourself and are preparing
to leave the station... you have to give the crew your speech before
taking off.
Listen to male shep say it ... then do it again with
femshep (make the same dialogue choices though to keep it fair)... the
actress' delivery of the lines sent a shiver down my spine. Was
genuinely inspiring - it stirred resolve in me.... I felt nothing of
the sort from male sheperd.
I couldn't agree with you more. Jennifer Hale is too awesome. Mark Meer is a good actor, but clearly not as experienced at doing voice. The only time I didn't cry when playing "I Remember Me" was like my third of roughly 6 playthroughs... that was my male playthrough. MaleShep just sounded sort of dry and unmoved. Jennifer Hale put a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes every freaking time, causing me to swear aloud and laugh at myself for being such a little kid about it. She's one of the best. Can't wait to see the Colonist background pop up.
God, but I hope they make the backgrounds matter to your love interests.
