Not sure if mentioned before but there is a reason why platinum solo speed run records are held by krogan vanguards and geth troopers instead of GIs.

DPS is the greatest armour power.

As a general rule I should say survivability.
If you're dead/must retreat you can't do damage.

But then if I had to choose between 10/20% health/shields and 10% damage I'd pick damage.

Also, damage threshold with certain guns should be considered.
For example, the difference with a valiant that does 820 damage per shot, and one who does 1000 is really tiny, as even the first would two shot kill most mooks in the game, while the second just has 250 more sustained dps, and that would only spare you 2-3 seconds when facing a boss, but the difference is a 35% weapon damage, a big one on paper.

There is a reason why Juggernaut is the most played class gold and platinum, double that of the next behind it, which happens to be a destroyer.

15 Most Played Kits (Gold & Platinum Only)

1. Geth Juggernaut (11.81%)
2. N7 Destroyer (5.47%)
3. Turian Ghost (4.38%)
4. Alliance Infiltration Unit (4.28%)
5. Geth Trooper (4.11%)
6. Krogan Warlord (3.01%)

Kroguard doesnt even make the list, and GI doesn't pop up till spot 11.

There's also a reason why the squishiest classes are the lest played.

Eric Fagnan wrote...

10 Least Played Kits (Gold & Platinum Only)

1. Drell Vanguard (0.31%)
2. Battlefield 3 Soldier (0.36%)
3. Volus Protector Vanguard (0.40%)
4. Volus Mercenary Sentinel (0.50%)
5. Vorcha Hunter Engineer (0.53%)
.....
9. Volus Adept (0.65%)

Stats are stats, Some of the most played kits in gold and plat are tanks, and the least played kits are some of the squishiest.

In general

More survivability >>>>>>>>> More dps

But however the better a player becomes and he/she is able to stay alive with squishy kits as well as another player with a tanker kit then

Dps > survivability.

Also try to solo thunderdome with a no fitness GI, even caineghis had to drop hunter in favor of full fitness

I would say damage but I am someone who acknowledges that it is not the be all and end all of this game.

The reason is that with high damage output and low damage intake you can find other ways to survive but with survivability over damage you can never increase your damage output.

Survivability is a strange term. The Drelldept is squishy, but he can also annihilate groups of enemies fast, and he can move quickly enough to get behind cover when he can't. In the 'damage vs. survivability' spectrum, he's definitely damage, but the nature of his damage-inducing stuff makes him more survivable than stuff that's similarly squishy but has a harder time dealing with enemies.

Not being overwhelmed because you can't kill quick enough decreases survivability to a greater extent than the value on health/shields/damage reduction a lot of the time.

On Gold damage and debuff/staggers. On the occasion that I play Platinum, Durability and Damage are both important.

I go without considering durability much on Gold, whereas on Platinum, durability is a concern (I prefer Vorcha Soldier, Geth Trooper, Sentinels and Collector Adepts for their durability combined with good damage output).

I prefer a combination of both... Leaning more towards survivability. There are other ways to increase survivability though besides fitness and shield gear... Like staggering things. I think a good stagger weapon/power is a better survivability tool than a Cyclonic Modulator... Things like Concussive Shot or the Venom... Especially since it tends to be the mooks with machine guns that do the majority of the killing, and not the big slow bosses who are hamstrung by the gate system.

I think damage is the obvious answer. I hear a ton of complaints about the AIU,GI,TGI, etc. Essentially, all the damage characters are "OP". Who ever complains about the krogans or volii being too good?

I thought people complained about TGI and AIU for pseudo ops packs and medigel. And even more people complain about Juggs.

When I was a scrub who had just started gold I had preferred survivability waaaaaaay more than damage output, but when I got better at the game I started to prefer using higher damage out put classes like the GI which was my favorite class for a very long time, now my favourite class is probably the geth trooper because I mainly solo/duo now and in solos survivability has more of an influence

Damage. Because there is absolutely no noticeable difference in survivability between 1500 shields and 800 shields. The only noticeable difference is between the drell characters and the krogans. Apart from that...there is absolutely no advantage to going beyond rank 4 fitness. Evolving fitness beyond rank 4 (or sometimes even rank 2) makes absolutely no difference to survivability, due to the nature of the game.

Eemies will mess you up just as badly regardless of how much shields you have. If you go in with 1000 shields, enemies can mess you up pretty badly. If you go in with 2000 shields, enemies can still mess you up just as bad. Doesn't make a difference. You would have to increase your shield by 2000 or so to even begin to notice some kind of improvement in survivability.

You'll notice it in the Thunderdome.

You should notice it anywhere. The difference between a base human without maxed fitness and one with max fitness and a cyclonic mod is huge. Enemies will tear through your shields in two shots literally.

It depends on the game, in some games you absolutely need survivability so that you can actually play offensively without constant fear of death.

For ME in particular I enjoy a mixture if possible of damage and survivability. BatSol comes to mind, tough enough to wander around aimlessly in the open, but also has great damage skills.

Pretty much this. Any kit with low health/sheilds is too frustrating in a laggy game , particularly if you are unable to trigger Ops pack
