I think they should have combined both systems with removable clips but if you don't have them they have a very long cooldown time. That would seem more realistic to me, but dont get me wrong, i am fine with the new system, but for realism they should have combined the two.

Why is it that whenever a player asks a simple question, i.e. Why fix what isn't broken? (ammunition system), a random shooter fan calls him/her a noob and to L2P? We just didn't want to be forced to deal with it, the game was originally a rpg (rpg-lite yes, but rpg still) and the shooting mechanic was different and interesting (finally, humanity found a way to stop dealing with running out of ammo/supply issues!). I just cannot believe that a relapse in humanities technology was a good idea. I understand it about heavy weapons, you cannot carry very many rockets on your person, but there was no point in doing it for normal weapons. I played the game on insanity from the first time I beat it till now (8+ replays ago). I have also beaten MW2, Gears of War 2, and Halo 3 on the hardest difficulty settings. Guess what, I liked ME's combat more. Sure I love the difficulty on MW2 (curse you gulag level why did you have to be so hard?) but I am a RPG gamer at heart.

Maybe I should respond to posts with pithy one liners and ad hominem attacks instead of long explanations. I keep assuming people actually want an answer tor why things changed, instead of just wanting to whine and turn on cheat codes.

Ugh. Okay, lets try this:

1: Can you open your mind for just one moment to the possibility that the developers of this game know more about game design than you do? Seriously people. THINK.

2: Learn to conserve ammo. Learn to aim. Learn to not suck. Switch to lower difficulty modes if you have to.

you know what's funny my first post about the general ammo situation had something similar to this before i wiped it for innaffective rambling.

except insinuating that the disgruntled populous wants to cheat, not very nautrally stanced are you?

however while they do obviously know more about game design than us we have a right to know why they couldn't hybrdize the system at least why there was no fluff about it why not just switch out heatsinks instead of heatsinks and ammo why not patch the original cannon to match the new why not give us higher ammo capacity...So on and So forth

These are perfectly legitimate questions and we as consumers of this product do deserve a response i thought initially it was gonna be amzing the reload then i noticed in the leaked play thorugh i saw pistol ammo seemd to cap at 100, not bad the ammo seemed sufficent enough, but people kept talking about Heat Sinks when it was clearly obvious there was a clip filled with metallic rounds entering the gun. then someone informed me the Ammo is the same from ME 1 but the Heat system is different?

wich made absolutely no sense unless of course the council races Rev Engineered reaper tech or something to get more effective ballistics or heating sinking equipment, wich would then make me question if it's better why does it need to be changed more than the other guns in ME 1

i have still yet to hear my fluff and Everyone is bringing up legitimate points as to what could have, in the game and in rl, made it occur.

Yet we still ahve no decisive answer and no assurances that ammo wich is what it is is plentiful enough.

So at what point does this become an invalid argument to quesiton the logic behind a decision when no real generally acceptable or confirmed reason to my knowledge has been given?

Edit:

All console players know how to use aim assist all PC players know how to Aim trust me. so unless you are a pc player you might as well point click and hope it hits Mr. Learn to aim :P

both know how to conserve ammo if you've ever played COD or a similar game you always run out at some point.

I hear this suggestion a lot, and it seems like it world work well until you imagine how frustrating it would be to be without heat sinks.

In order to balance a hybrid system, you would have to have longer cooldown times for the heat sinks to be worth while.  But because guns can cool down without them, you would also have to limit the amount of heat sinks you would find for the back up system to be meaningful.

What this means is that if you run out of heat sinksyou would have to deal with a long annoying cooldown time and you would be out of action for a long time.   (This would be very frustrating to be stuck with, even more so than simply having to switch weapons.)   People would avoid it like the plague, and the effect would be the same ammuniton problem people are complaining about now, except running out would happen even more often.

I'll definitely agree that my stance is not neutral.  I will be very suprised if ME2's combat does not turn out to be an improvement, though I'm open to the possibility.

Anyhow, there's a reason infinite ammo has been historically relegated to a cheat code enabled role in the past in games.  It badly unbalances gameplay to the point of being completely broken. Especially in a game like ME1 where the enemies get our skills and effectively have our same cheat codes enabled themselves.  (Don't get me started on immunity and the fact that it makes you nigh-invulnerable.)

I'll admit that it's theoretically possible to balance a game around it and make it play well, but ME1 did not accomplish that, and I can understand why they have effectively disabled our cheats this time around.

Yet we still ahve no decisive answer and no assurances that ammo wich is what it is is plentiful enough.

So at what point does this become an invalid argument to quesiton the logic behind a decision when no real generally acceptable or confirmed reason to my knowledge has been given?

I do agree this is a problem.  I wish that bioware had put a little more effort into explaining the new change to the fans, both through lore and gameplay.   I think they just weren't expecting fans to be nearly as confused about why they did what they did as they were.  They were a little opaque about it, but that's why I'm here trying to help make things make sense for people.

I don't see it as that much of a problem, you would have to carefully manage your bursts to keep the gun from going into overheat. (Like you would in ME1) With the added heat sink change in ME2 being a method you could gain instant cool down so you could really spray down big groups quickly.

So I don't see a problem of just boosting the overheat time and mixing the two systems. Hell they could even have a metal block ammo counter added on too so yo uhave hard ammo to worry about too :P

I think part of the reason was to discourage people from firing unnecessary shots. I'll admit that I'd often run around the citadel shooting all over the place in ME1 :D.

Plus, now it seems more like a real combat shooter as opposed to an RPG where you just happen to use guns. Seriously, ME1 all you'd really had to do was whip out your gun, point in the direction of your target, and fire.

I will have to play the game, but so far I agree it sucks.

Reports are, that anyone who used the heavy pistol or sniper rifle will be out of ammo before a battle is over. The game is balanced around the large ammo capacity guns like assault rifle and sub-machine gun.

All the low ammo gun users....shotgun, sniper and heavy pistol are finding that the game forces them to only use those guns sporadically. I"ll have to judgeo for myself whether it makes sense or is just a contrived mechanic for force using weapons for the sake of being a shooter that forces changing weapons.

I found that it makes the use of bullets more precious than unloading a few heat cycles of ammo into a mech. Headshots become much more important, and more satisfying with guns like the heavy pistol. I'm concerned with the limited availability of the assault rifle. Only the soldier has it and I'd like to follow the instructions of the various Krogan I face.
"Why don't you use a real man's weapon?"
I'm sorry I'm whipping you with a pistol, I'd love to kill you with a better gun. Or at least one with more bullets, I hate being conservative with my fire, its the future!

Well, according to the ME2 codex: It was long thought that personal weapons had plateaued in performance, but the Geth proved all theories wrong. Mathematically reviewing their combat logs, it was found that in an age of Kinetic barriers, whoever could put the most rounds down-range the fastest won. But combatants were deliberately forced to shoot slower to manage waste heat or pause as their weapons vented.
To eliminate this inefficiency, the Geth adopted detachable heat sinks known as Thermal Clips. While organic arms manufacturers were initially doubtful this would produce a net gain, a well-trained solider can eject and swap thermal clips in under a second. Faced with superior enemy firepower, organic armies soon followed the geth's lead, and today's battlefields are littered with these thermal clips.

Somehow among the living computers of the geth and the most intelligent minds of the galaxy, they never thought of the middle ground. A weapon with heatsinks for when the most rounds down range mattered, and the passive cooling system for the other 90 percent of the time when a soldiers longevity in the field was more important.

Thankfully in todays battlefield these thermal clips are laying on the ground like discarded beer cans in a trailer park. Our resupply ships fly over each area we plan to do battle on, and drop thousands of heat sinks in a random pattern around the drop zone. Not efficient but it works:)

All is good, we followed the Geth technological lead and are now reliant on limited resourced and ammo in each battle. We followed like sheep and they  would laugh if Geth has a sense of humor.

Sorry that codex explanation was not sufficient.

I suppose the prototype HMWA X with double heatsinks got destroyed somewhere in those two years and whoever made those didn't get any performance reports and feedback to make more, thus scrapping the whole Spectre gear project.

I'm not going to lose sleep over it, since finite ammo is nothing new to me. Just can't shoot at scenery on a whim anymore.

I'm sure most of us have seen the new codex entry by now as it was released last night at 12

>.>

<.<

yes i've been playing non stop

I do have to say it makes logical sense and there is a plethora of Ammo Cartriges or heatsinks wich ever you prefer lying about. no real worry in running out i've only hit bottom of my 2nd pistol twice. However thus far finding and looking for better items is a pain and the damned mission complete is there and i can't figure out how to get rid of help tips.

By and By for Low graphics players like myself (sporting a magical G100 i know it's magic :P) the game looks excellent still on Absolute Lowest settings Far better than ME 1 on Medium in my personal opinion.

Welp...wait for someone to hack the coalesced.ini file to set the ammo back to the way it was.

The unfortunate part of ME2 is that the .ini files are now compressed, so you need to jump through hoops to make edits to the gameplay.

If you don't like guns, you hate the new system. If you like guns, you realize how it's ****** compared to the old way.

After playing it.... I really hate the ammo system now... My god... Not olny does it break the combat and make it feel even slower.... but now you cant ever quick swap weapons like in ME 1...

nor can you crouch... WTF BioWare!!

OK now after a rew hours in... I will say that ME 2 is a great game....

The ship fuel is not as bad as I thought it would be, but the ammo system on the main weapons (non heavy weapons) and the limitation of weapons availability to certain classes are annoyingly bad!

I mean the ammo system makes the combat seem even slower, and while sheps movements are smoother, the controls seem clunkier and it only adds tension to combat when your trying to switch weapons and hit the wrong button to quick swap as its now for maping powers.....

and why cant my vanguard use all the weapons? I mean come on, Sheps this elite solider, worth spending billions on to bring back from the dead, but she dont know how to use sub machine guns, or a heavy machine gun or sniper.... I mean come on...

I don't like the new ammo system. It's not a game breaker but it's tedious to me I miss the old gear system thet was more strategic to me.

I went through the entirety of Mass Effect with a pistol. It's not happening this time. I can pull off what, 28 shots with my handcannon before I'm out of ammo? Yeah, that's super fun.

my only gripe is I run out a lot, and I really try to conserve my shots too, and I am playing on casual!

I'm not really into the fighting stuff, I have enough fps games, ME1 and ME2 to me is all about the cinematic experience and when i get killed b/c my gun ran out and I am switching to something lesser it really frustrates me . . .

On one side you have the fan boys of the rpg elements, on the other the Tps fan boys. Both sides are making this forum he**. And while i think they could have made a better system then just adding ammo (maybe when you are out of ammo you can still fire, but your weapon will quickly overheat, taking long to cooldown), but at the end of the day it was what they did.

Also, just keep on ranting, but please remember to state why you hate the ammo system, and how they could have made it better, then hopefully we will se it perfected in Me3.

Not loving the new ammo system at all. Makes the shotgun and pistols completely undesirable.

I do prefer ME1's ammo mechanic; ME2's doesn't feel right to me. Fortunately, I think I have already adjusted to the change, so it really is not a hinderance anymore.
