interesting thread I read both books and Revelation does talk about how everyone is mixed and race no longer matter,I can see it comingMojojojoeJDH wrote...
This isn't like the Trolls thread this is a general observation. Taylor is for lack of a better term, very black which according to the ME mythos should be rare due to the blending or races that has occured because of Earths global government thing. Natural blonds are very rare as well. I can only count in my head a few black guys in ME1 including Capt. Anderson but according to ME:Revelation he is also part Native American, which could also offset the skin pigmintation but his skin tone isn't that dark. So Jacob is something of a rarity.

Really, though, I doubt that by the Mass Effect time period that whites and blacks will be rare. I always thought that they would become rare 500 years or so in the future.

I'd guess so but I'm thinking their features would be determined by which ethnic traits were dominant.

Hadn't thought about it before, but I suppose you (the OP) could be right. I also haven't read any of the novels. Is there any discussion about life on Earth during the time of the games? That could be interesting to discuss.
Not having read the books, I must wonder just how homogeneous the culture of Earth has become. Frankly, we aren't exactly homogeneous now; there are neighborhoods where people segregate (forgive the term, but it does describe the situation) themselves from anyone that isn't like themselves. Is that tendency simply...gone? I suppose the contact with alien species might in fact give us something to focus on besides our own differences.

edited for grammar.
Eventually, everyone on this planet will be a sort of mocha colour, it's already begun in North America. Ethnic barriers are breaking down, it only seems logical that in the coming centuries, we'll all be a varied mix of ethnicities. Inbreeding to preserve bloodlines is bad for our species, it's bad for any species. And like someone else said, by the time this happens, genetic engineering will be to the point where you can choose what your child will look like in the womb.
It sounds very sci-fi, and perhaps a little far-fetched, but you should read about what's going on in the field of genetic science right now. We're already living sci-fi.

Pretty weaksauce racism in here, if there even is any. I know a lot of them hide behind internet anonymity, but they're usually sheltered anyway so they don't have much impact on the world. I wouldn't sweat it if I were you.izmirtheastarach wrote...
As I tried to point out before, you cannot have threads like this without them becoming racist.
As for Mass Effect, I'm not sure why people get the impression there is no sign of racial homogeneity in the game. Quite a few characters that are often taken as Caucasian appear to be of multiethnic descent. It might not be to the degree that they describe in the book, but its noticeable. I'm glad BioWare is around to address these issues in video games. God knows we have enough "Cole Trains" out there already.

His skin was dark brown, his black hair cut high and tight in accordance with Alliance regulations. His features, like most citizens in the multicultural society of the late twenty-second century, were a mix of several different racial characteristics. Predominantly African, but Grissom thought he could see lingering traces of Central European and native American ancestry as well
Also though Anderson was from London he had no discernible accent. Another quote(pain to type out)
The file showed Anderson had been born and raised in London, but he had almost no discernible regional accent. His generic dialect was likely the product of cross-cultural exposure through e-schooling and the info nets combined with a steady barrage of pan-global entertainment vids and music.
About that study that claims that most people will be black in the future is most likely going on the assumption that there will be no or little interracial coupling, ergo, black population rises as white population lowers, however in the ME future it is obvious this is not the case and interracial couplings are not only common but have reached the point that they are hardly interracial anymore do to the races being so mixed.
And its not just skin color, like the exaple with the two brothers having a black father and white mother but one is very white while the other is very black there are other things. Lip size thickness, eye shape, jaw configuration, shead shape, the list goes on.

Everyone else struck me as being half-n-halfs of races, if that makes sense. So I would agree with the OP, Jacob being as dark as he is is kinda unique.
As far as "shouldn't people look more Asian, then?" goes...out of personal observation, half Asians tend to look more like their non-Asian parentage. Or...maybe that's just Filipinos...
