Whovians unite!

Image IPB

So, any Whovians here on BSN?

When did you start to watch Doctor Who? Who is your favorite doctor? And what did you think of the series 7 finale cliffhanger?

I started watching Doctor Who when they rebooted the series in 2005, with Christopher Eccleson as the 9th Doctor. In the meantime I've seen every Doctor who episode I could find (the entire reboot series and most of the classic Doctor Who).

My favorite Doctor is the 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith. Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor is also a favorite of mine.

I'm very curious what role John Hurt will play in the 50th anniversary special, and afterwards in the 8th series. It's pretty awesome so see an amazing actor like him in Doctor Who, and as an incarnation of The Doctor no less!

Who do you think John Hurt will be? Could it be a hidden previous incarnation of the Doctor? Or is it perhaps the 12th or 13th incarnation of the Doctor? Could he be (or become) the Valeyard?

I like Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen but It's getting hard for me to remember since I haven't seen them for a long time and I have a bad memory.

being British (and giving a hint to my age) I started with Jon Pertwee
My favourite is Patrick Troughton (from videos, DVDs and his 3 return appearances in 3 doctors, 5 doctors and 2 doctors)
Not yet come to any clear decision over the finale...I'll wait and see in the 50th anniversary special

Regarding John Hurt as the Doctor and what I have gathered from people, he is the actual 9th Doctor, while Matt Smith is actually the 12th Doctor (which would make him the last Doctor). Apparently people got this from The Sun, but I haven't found the article.

John Hurt is possibly the forgotten 9th regeneration of the Doctor, but he is not a doctor, which means that Eccleson is still the real 9th doctor, Tennant the 10th doctor and Smith the 11th doctor.

Also, a Time Lord has 12 regenerations, which means that even if Smith is the 12th incarnation, he's not the last. There is still the 13th incarnation after him.

And who knows? Perhaps the Doctor will find a way to regenerate more often? The classic Doctor Who series gave clues to such possibilities.

I've only recently started watching Doctor Who, starting with the 9th incarnation of The Doctor played by Christopher Eccleston. I'm more used to sci-fi series like Stargate, where the main characters usually stay around for several seasons, so it came as a bit of a shock that the main cast of Doctor Who can change from one season to the next as can The Doctor himself. As a result, Rose remains my favourite companion though, of late, I've found that I can enjoy the other companions as well, moreso if they don't try to romance The Doctor (forever Rose, mea culpa).

For now, I've only seen Eccleston and Tennant playing The Doctor (and the last episode of season seven with Matt Smith; come on, it was called the name of The Doctor!) and I can honestly say I enjoyed them both. While Tennant brings a heck of a lot more energy to the role (he's like a kid on a sugar rush) and a lot of drama, Eccleston's pose and demeanor immediately convey that he's not a person to be trifled with, he's a Time Lord. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just check "The Parting of the Ways" where Eccleston absorbs the energy from the TARDIS. Now that's a Time Lord!

I'll be checking on Matt Smith's incarnation of The Doctor next since he wasn't too shabby in "The Name of the Doctor" and, thankfully, each incarnation seems to bring something different to the role and never tries to replace the previous one.

As a side note, I would prefer it if they were a bit more consistent with their stories, but I can still enjoy them nonetheless. It reminds me of the TV series of old that were mostly a series of adventures, one after the other.

By the by, I've heard people say that season 7 is one of the weakest. Is there any truth to that?

That's because Doctor Who is a TV series of old. It started in 1963. We're now 50 years later and the series is still going strong. :)

Season 7 is split in 2 series, and that's what makes it a bit weaker I think. They should not have split up the season.

Season 7 starts rather strong and the first half (season 7a) ends really powerful. Then when season 7b started, it was once again very good. But after that, the season became progressively worse, until the last 2 episodes, who are both very awesome.

So in short: Season 7 has a strong beginning, strong middle-part and strong ending, but everything in between is rather weak to be honest.

I remember getting into the series not too long ago. I was getting bored with the first few episodes but Dalek is what sold me.

The Daleks are hilarious. I just love them!

EXTERMINATE!

The creepiest monsters in Doctor Who are the Weeping Angels though. Seriously, those goddamn angels will give me a heart attack sooner or later!

The second Dr. Who from the right is the only one I've watched and he saved the world by positive thinking of millions of people of the earth ... there is nothing else remained.
This dumb series must cease to exist!

That's Russel T. Davies for you. He always prefered to write emotional soap opera dramas, a rollercoaster of dramatic scenes where the Doctor is in despair, followed by a heroic victory from the Doctor through the power of good.

The current Doctor Who writer is better though. The 11th Doctor series is being written by Steven Moffat and I think he does a better job at writing for Doctor Who. The 11th Doctor is amazingly funny, yet serious when he needs to be, and he doesn't rely on friendship-is-magic deus ex machinas.

So do you oldtimers still watch Doctor Who right now after the reboot in 2005? :P

I went off it a bit when he regenerated into Peter Davison. Let's face it, he was a bit of a drip.

I liked Eccleston's Doctor, though I would've preferred to keep the old 4x25 minute format because, y'know, it's old and therefore The Way It Should Be Done; having a budget was nice, though RTD's tendency to try to turn it into a pantomime (especially one set in a grubby Cardiff council estate) could get wearing after a while.  Didn't like Tennant, would probably like Smith but I'm not really in a TV watching phase at the moment.

Me too - I started actively watching Doctor Who when they launched the reboot with Eccleston. Prior to that, I wasn't really a Whovian - although I did watch that Doctor Who movie with Paul McGann.

As far as my favorite Doctor goes, it's kind of hard to choose. I was partial to Eccleston because his Doctor had a darker and slightly dangerous edge to him. Honestly, I wasn't thrilled when he left, but I ended up adoring David Tennant. I love Matt Smith as well, but I'm going to pick David Tennant as my favorite. However, it's really kind of a tie between all three of them for me. :P

Big Who fan.

My two top favorite Doctors are Eleven and Four but I like the First and what I've seen of the Second Doctor I've enjoyed as well.

I enjoy 9 and 10 well enough but there are elements of their characters that I am not a huge fan of: especially 10's moral self righteousness and self professed pacificism.

Still, excited that 10 is coming back for the Anniversary.

I actually liked Peter Davison. But he was indeed not as good as the 3rd and 4th doctors, John Pertwee and Tom Baker respectively. I really liked those 2 from the classic Doctor who series.

I disagree. When it comes to Doctor Who, I can't get enough of it. More and longer episodes is a good thing! :D

There are multiple things about RTD that I wasn't particularily fond of. I really don't understand the hype about RTD as a writer and Tennant as the 10th Doctor. I mean it wasn't really bad or anything, but certainly not the prime example of classic Doctor Who goodness either. I think Moffat and Smith are doing a better job at recreating the classic Doctor Who experience in a modern light, though the last series (series 7b) was a bit of a let-down.

This is likely the best explanation for John Hurt. He broke the promise of The Doctor, in the episode Hurt says that he did what he did for peace and sanity, but being replied with that it was not in the name of the Doctor. This probably refers to the end of the Time War where he commited genocide on the Timelords.

My first Dr Who episode was shown to me in high school during English class when they rebooted it in 2005. After that one episode I was sold and since then have watched every episode, including the classic series.

As for my favorite Doctor, it is probably between Tom Baker and David Tennant
Tom Baker pretty much speaks for himself, he is the classic Doctor and will always be.
Tennant is the best doctor since the reboot at least. He had everything, the humor, enthiusiams, determination, The Master.

I really love him returning for the 50th anniversary episode. Matt Smith and Davind Tennant together should be fanstastic! (to quote the 9th)

Allons-y!

RTD added a very strong Buffy vibe to the series and particularly the characters that strongly resonated with the teenage girl crowd. Its why some of them have had difficulty transitioning to Eleven/Moffat as the Buffy influence has subsided and more of the tone of the original show has seeped back in.

Yeah this is totally true. I feel that the first 4 series of the 2005 reboot were more focussed on an adolescent audience, while series 5 and onwards is more focussed on an adult audience (more specifically, I feel it's more focussed on the people who used to watch the classic Doctor Who as kids).

I can understand that some people, specially girls and young women prefer the RTD series, but I personally like what Moffat is doing a lot more, even though Moffat isn't perfect and sometimes makes terrible decisions, for example his decision to bring back the Daleks in their old golden form in Asylum of the Daleks, that didn't make sense lore-wise. Where the hell did these Daleks come from? I honestly get the feeling that Moffat was simply bullied in getting the old Daleks back because a vocal minority of butthurt fans did not like the new Daleks that Moffat introduced in Victory of The Daleks.

Oh man, I want to see John Simm return as The Master. He was absolutely BRILLIANT. In my opinion, he was the best Master so far.

If Moffat brings back The Master one day (I sure hope he will!) I hope he will return John Simm. I'm open to the idea of a new actor playing The Master, but I can't deny that I would love to see more of John Simm as The Master.

You know, there is one thing in all of the doctor who recent episodes that has bugged me, if only because of how big a fan of the episode I was.

What was up with the creature in the satan pit? Was it really the devil? How'd it end up in the pit to begin with? How did it "know" the doctor?

Mainly, I just want to see it make a comeback, somehow. That, and whatever it was in the episode midnight. I can't help but feel in my mind the two things are connected, but I do not know how at all.
