Is this 12 regeneration rule an absolute or is it an average?

Maybe some Time Lords get 25, whereas others only get 5.
So on average Time Lords get 12 regenerations perhaps?

If the rule is an average, the show doesn't have to make up space magic reasons for the Doctor exceeding 12, or reboot the series JJ Abrams style.

Well, apparently the twelve-regeneration cycle was established in "The Deadly Assassin."

In the Sarah Jane Adventures The Doctor states he has 507 Regens.
But Doctor Who really doesn't keep good continuity with itself.
Contradictions are everywhere.

Moffat said the twelve-regeneration rule stands.

But then again Moffat lies.^_^

EDIT: So, you're a Doctor Who fan, Clones?

Indeed I am.
Yeah, Moffet also said the 8th Doctor wasn't going to show up again, and he did (and fantastically, still a shame he never got a series)

Of course, there's the small matter of getting a blu ray player first.

Can your puny consoles reproduce blu ray discs from regions B and C?

That's what I thought.

As that article notes, the limit was proposed to be raised for the Doctor, and actually raised for the Master. So there's no problem.

My era is Tom Baker, one of the finer doctors IMHO. The Doctor is bit too flawless for my tastes these days, with too many get out of jail free cards in the plots.

Blame Moffat for that.

Aye, people are saying that Smith is not the 11th but really the 13th, because the Meta Crisis Doctor that went to be with Rose counts.

If so, the order would be-

1. William Hartnell
2. Patrick Troughton
3. Jon Pertwee
4. Tom Baker
5. Peter Davison
6. Colin Baker
7. Sylvestor McCoy
8. Paul McGann
9. John Hurt
10. Christopher Eccleston
11. David Tennant
12. Meta Crisis David Tennant
13. Matt Smith
14. Peter Capaldi

Which would be interesting, if so.

I seem to recall that the writers are not too worried about the numbers, but it is the fans that are obsessed with the set numbers.

The regeneration into John Hurt was like a 1-up given by Sisterhood of Karn because the Doctor was already dead. So it doesn't take away from the original regenerations the Doctor had.

Meta Crisis Tennant is a cluster**** that was simply explained a way as a stopping the regeneration process right near the end by sending the rest of the energy to his old hand. So technically it isn't a regeneration because the cells didn't "re-organised" after the repair and restore process.

But then you have River giving up her remaining nine(?) regenerations to the doctor in order to revive him. Then Matt turns around and uses his regeneration powers to heal River's broken hand.

So was it necessary for River to use up all her regenerations to revive him? Or does the Doctor have like eight more regenerations because of River?

The High Council also has the ability to give the Doctor another set of regeneration cycles.

I believe it was that River needed to use all her regenerations to revive him, not her giving regenerations to him.

See that's the thing. The writers can tweak it if nessary. It's not like she fully understood what she was doing at the time.

I can't remember what the explanation was, but the Master manage to some how exceed the 12 regeneration limit.

He then gained electromancy, and the ability to fly. Because, well just because.

I liked John Simm as the Master.
I just wasn't fond of either Dr Who special that featured him.

His interestingly troubled persona was overshadowed by over the top goofiness.
  • Transforming everyone into the Master (Being John Malkovich style),
  • Giving the Master superhuman powers that belong in the DC and Marvel universes.
  • Rapidly aging the Doctor.
  • Taking over the Earth with that silly pop song "Here Comes The Drums".
  • A magic reset button involving the world population chanting "Doctor".
No I'm not making this up. These events happened in Dr Who canon.

only if ..
1) they expand their license to include new Who (possible as AudioGo is deaded and Big Finish had special permission to finish off Destiny of the Doctor)
and 2) John Hurt finds a gap in his scedule big enough

(there is speculation in the Big Finish forum [where I have a different alias] but nothing official)

If you know where I can find John Hurt fan fiction, I'd be grateful.:wizard:
I'd just imagine John Hurt's voice on any written dialogue.

Maybe the BBC will produce John Hurt books.

I was just wondering, could Osgood become Capaldi's companion?
