Well, it was announced today what I've known for quite some time- Matt Smith is leaving his role as The Doctor this year.

He'll star with David Tennant for the 50th anniversary special, and will leave the show after The Doctor regenerates in the Christmas Special.

Who his replacement will be, we don't know.

All I have to say to that- finally.

And now that trailer I posted earlier is even more powerful.

Interesting. I thought he'd confirmed he would return for another series (see here). Guess he changed his mind.

Going crazy here, how cool would it be if Matt regenerated into Eccleston again?

If he regenerated back to a previous form, if anyone it should be Paul McGann(the 8th Doc).

At least then he'd have more than a movie and some radio to work with.

But new doc it'll be.

Cumberbatch would make a better Master or Valeyard than a Doctor.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo I don't want Matt Smith to go already! :(

I think I've grown used to Matt Smith... he has become my favorite Doctor, and I will most certainly shed a manly tear when he regenerates into a new Doctor, even more so than when Tennant regenerated into Smith.

Vale Undecim.... :crying:

I was spoiled on Tennant, Smith was great at what he did(being more quirky and stuff) but I've felt for quite some time that we needed fresh air and a brand new Doc.

Glad its finally happening. Hopefully whoever comes next lives up to their predecessors.

Matt Smith > David Tennant in my opinion.

Though I did shed a manly tear when Tennant had to leave. I didn't want him to leave at that time. But little did I know that Tennant would be replaced by an EVEN BETTER Doctor, Matt Smith.

We can only hope that the next Doctor will once again be EVEN BETTER than the current doctor, Matt Smith. That's a tough thing to do, and so there will be a heavy burden on the shoulders of the actor who is going to pick up the scepter and become the next Doctor.

Can we speculate on who john hunt will be in the special? My monies on an older 8th doctor.

I think John Hurt is either a forgotten 9th regeneration (making Eccleston the 10th regeneration, Tennant the 11th and Smith the 12th),

or John Hurt is some sort of split-off regeneration, similar to the 10th Doctor - Donna meta-crisis in series 4,

or John Hurt is a future incarnation of the Doctor (13th incarnation?) who becomes the Valeyard.

John Hurt is NOT an older 8th Doctor, because Paul McGann is confirmed to return in the 50th anniversary episode to shoot a regeneration scene.

I so wish I'd have the opportunity to bow down to this man out of respect. Amazing talent.

Honestly, the Tenth Doctor had begun to grate by the end of his run. I appreciate what Tennant did in the role, but since the Season 3 finale the character had become increasingly unlikeable. By the end he was basically alternating between wallowing and self righteousness and it was so completely infuriating. The whole no-guns/no-killing thing which became prominent in S4 had me climbing the walls.

I don't think these were faults of Tennant however, it was just what he was asked to play. When he had good material he was great, the Impossible Planet/Satan Pit are two of my favorite Who episodes ever - but there was just too much inconsistency over the years.

I feel like Eleven's character has held together remarkably well. Goofy, eccentric, alien, manipulative, a bit rude, and a nice hard edge when dealing with his enemies, the guy was a dangerous enemy and rarely showed mercy. He's become a bit more tempered by experience and loss over the years but the promise of the Eleventh Hour has largely been carried through his entire run.

Smith will most definitely be missed.

David Tennant was better than Matt Smith.

That said, Matt Smith played the role fantastic and I will surely miss him
But what the hell happend behind the screens there? Because one moment he confirms to be back for the next season and the next he announces that he quits=]

Here is a nice article about the possible role of John Hurt. Personally I believe he is the missing regeneration between the 8th and (current) 9th

Well I guess we will always have a different opinion on this matter, no matter how often the subject is brought up. There will always be a pro-Tennant group, a pro-Smith group and a I-don't-care-either-way group.

As far as I understand it, he will be there for series 8, or at least the first half. Then during the Christmas special, he'll leave.

So basically we'll start with thr 50th anniversery two-parter on November the 23th. Then the 8th series starts and we'll probably get 3 or 4 episodes until the Christmas special, which is when Smith will leave.

This is what I hope. Maybe there won't be any episodes between the 50th special and the Christmas special. But I hope there will.

Thanks! That's a very nice article! I've been reading it half-way through and it's a good read. I'm gonna read the rest now.

Thanks again!

2 things if you look at the "cofirmation"
1 - it's from a website associated with British newspaper "the Sun" who do not have a reputation for accuracy (more a reputation for making up stories)
2 - Smith did not say anything about himself as an individual but merely said "we" will make another series - it is possible that the "we" refers to a group he is currently part of but won't be at the time of the series

Note that in the interview Matt Smith said the filming for season 8 would either begin at the end of this year or early next year.
SO season 8 will probably be broadcast about Easter 2014

It's a real shame to see Smith go, though now is probably the best time for him to do so considering how long he's been in the role. While he isn't really my favourite he was definitely one of the greats at least, Smith himself played the Doctor very well, the character just suffered from bad writing at times.

Speaking of, I see some folks call Clara a Mary Sue. What's your stance on this?

I have only just discovered this thread by chance.  Great to see a thread dedicated to Doctor Who.

I have to admit I am sad to hear that Matt Smith is leaving.  I thought he made a good Doctor and made the character his own after Mr Tennant (who along with Tom Baker will always be my favourites).

Blogtor Who has a list of possible contenders for the 12th Doctor (some interesting choices).  There are some that have caught my eye -
