Eh, I can't see River Song as a convincing Doctor. She's not...Doctory enough. Too...Rivery.

In the episode "The Doctor's Wife", The Doc explains that yeah, gender swapping is possible.

I think they already wasted the perfect actress for a female Doctor; Catherine Tate. She proved that she would have been the perfect female Doctor during the series 4 finale. Doctor Donna was amazing.

No one would ever be able to pull of a female Doctor better than Catherine Tate, that's what I believe.

There's always someone better than one before, you just have to find them.

But yeah, she would've made an aaaaamazing Doctor. Well technically in a way she was, for however brief a time.

"Later, in the fourth episode of the series, "The Doctor's Wife", it was stated that Time Lords can potentially change sex during a regeneration, something which had never been confirmed before (although, at certain points during the show's history, female actors have been suggested as possible candidates to play the Doctor)."

In case it gets missed.

As amazing as Doctor Donna was though, would you want to see an entire series with her as the main character? Or multiple series? Personally I think I would get pretty tired of her after 1 series, maybe even earlier.

Honestly, I think the Doctor should stay male, and that's not because I'm sexist or anything. I just wouldn't enjoy watching a female Doctor to be quite frank, not for longer than a half season that is. The idea just doesn't feel right to me. The idea gives me a strange feeling in my guts.

You don't have to keep clarifying that you aren't sexist, its fine to have an opinion. :P

But I'd love to see multiple seasons with a female Doctor. Three or Four before she goes the way of the past regenerations and we get a new Doc. That one likely returning back to male form.

I'm just saying. There are plenty of white knights and feminists who'd like to think otherwise, they would most certainly want to crusify me for my (negative) thoughts on a potential female Doctor.

Personally I would like to see Doctor Donna return, or perhaps a similar meta-crisis in the future. Or perhaps an entirely new female character who turns out to be a Time Lord.  I wouldn't want to see an entire season with "our" Doctor as a woman though.

Edit: Donna Noble was by far my favorite companion so far. I would love to see her return in Doctor Who. I'm kinda sad that David Tennant returns with Billie Piper in the 50th anniversary and not with Catherine Tate.

It makes sense though. I'm assuming it won't really be the Tenth Doctor. I'm guessing its Meta-Ten and Rose from Pete's World.

But oh man, the kind of things they could do with a female Doctor. That would be ace. They'd have to find the perfect actress for it though, one that can be witty, charming, intimidating, exuberant, any number of emotions when necessary.

I highly doubt that. Bringing back meta-Ten instead of the proper and real 10th Doctor would be a d*ck thing to do. Moffat can be a d*ck, but not that much of a d*ck.

I can't exactly see what a female Doctor would be able to do or be that a male Doctor would not, aside from using her sex-appeal if she's hot (which would be absolutely terrible and totally un-doctor-like).

Speaking of meta-Ten:

What if John Hurt is the regeneration of meta-Ten? I know that the 10th Doctor said that his meta-duplicate would not be able to regenerate, but what if he's wrong?

I'd be perfectly okay with Meta-Ten being who's returning, and have already accepted it as the most likely scenario. It makes more sense to me than the actual Tenth Doctor. Because if Rose is coming back, why not have Meta Ten appear? It would be odd to exclude him.

As far as what a female Doctor could bring to the table that a male Doctor would not, its not about that. I see her as being the same as what we've always had. Just a woman this time, to freshen things up.

I just thought of a reason why logically the 12th doctor cannot possibly be a woman:

River Song has known The Doctor for all her life and she always referred to him as "he". Since River Song's arc is not over yet (some people seem to confusingly think it is, but it isn't) it therefor means that the 12th doctor cannot be a woman, unless the River Song story arc would be wrapped up in the 50th anniversary, which I highly doubt.

It would suck major ass if River was the reason we couldn't have a female Doctor.

I actually think it'd be hilarious if when The Doctor regenerated into a woman, River was like, "Oh, I've been waiting for that for yeeeears."

Doctor-"YOU KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN!?"

River-"Spoilers."

That would be hilarious, but it would also be a major retcon. When River talked about her past experiences with The Doctor (e.g. the Doctor's future) she always talked about him as a male, talking about "he" and "him".

Aye. And it could be said its because she didn't want him to ever find out.

River- "I had to see the look on that face."

*pan to The Doctor, jaw is scraping the floor*

River- "Definitely worth it."

From what I got from leaked spoilers, John Hurt is the 9th doctor who was the one possibly most involved during the time war. He got wiped because of something he did, which would make the current Doctor the final regeneration.

They probably won't go this way but if it is final regen something has to happen to either reset or change the game. Narratively speaking the simplest way would have Matt Smith sacrificing himself to save Clara from jumping into his timeline, causing a merging of Time lord and her. She would have time travelled as much as the doctor due to the whole saving him throughout his timeline so she would have been exposed to same or even more amount of time energy as the Doctor. They merge she then becomes the Doctor v2.0 resetting the regenerations and becoming a blend of the Clara we know and the doctor. With new memories mixed with hers it would be dramatically interesting - though with her travelling through his timeline already she would remember much of it anyway. If the BBC don't think the actress can hold a show as lead then then merging could create a new female doctor with aspects of Clara but played by more famous actress. Personally I like current actress and think she could pull it off as lead, especially if they give her a 'famous' actor to play the new companion.

Jenna-Louise Coleman as The Doctor?

I could see it. Kiiinda. I think they'd need someone new, a better fit.

Euhhmmm nope. The Doctor has 13 incarnations (he can regenerate 12 times).

So if Matt Smith turns out to be the 12th incarnation rather than the 11th, it means we still have 1 regeneration left: the 13th incarnation, the one who eventually becomes the Valeyard.

Also, I think Jenna-Louise Coleman is a rather mediocre companion. She can barely hold my interest as a companion, let alone as a Doctor. She would never ever be able to pull that off, no offense to her or her fans.

I wonder what the oldtimers here think about the concept of a female Doctor. Are you oldies in favour of a female Doctor? Or against it?

Well this is sad news, Smith was the second best Doctor and the best Doctor out of the new seasons.

And as for who should play the Doctor next?

Anthony Stewart Head please.

I thought Emma Watson for a moment, then realized I don't think I'd want 3-4 season of her as The Doc while I'd totally take Catherine Tate for that long.

The Narrator of Doctor Who Confidential as the new Doctor? Hmmmm... yeah... sure... why not? At least he already is familiar with Doctor Who.

As for female doctor actress - Olivia Colman or Helen Mirren.
