How about Michael Sheen? He's not doing very much of note these days.

Pfft, I never joked about there being a possible female Doctor. Its being discussed, and Moffat is totally open to it by his own admission.
Ah, but the question is, would people watch her?:innocent:
I imagine the vast majority would.

It's only being discussed by a select few people on the internet, mostly the white knighters, the rainbow brigade and the feminists.
Oh come on.

Oh, it's no joke. I think a female Doctor would be a great departure.
A female Doctor could have been okay if it was done earlier, but not as the LAST doctor (if the next Doctor is indeed going to be the last one, and I highly doubt that).

I can see that working. He's a great actor, he's Brittish, he has not much to do indeed. He is indeed another good, realistic candidate for the 12th doctor.

Frankly I'm not surprised by that. But let's not go there.

Even after looking her up on the interwebz and checking her portfolio I still couldn't pin-point down where I saw her earlier. It's quite frustrating.
Edit: Oh wait of course, from Underworld! LMAO! For some reason I always thought Erika in Underworld was Yvonne Strahovski, but it's Sophia Myles, and that's where I know her from! HERRRRRRDERRRRRRRP!

Another actor I just thought of that could pull of a good Doctor is Ben Whishaw.

She's less charismatic and assertive than the role would demand, though, I think.

The best (but not likely gonna happen) 12th Doctor would be Hugh Laurie imo.

After Cloud Atlas and Skyfall, I doubt he's coming down to Brit TV any time soon. But, he'd be interesting, if a bit rigid.

Myles is also in Tristan + Isolde, which really isn't too terrible.

Aye. Well, http://www.guardian....-who-matt-smith
More chatter about replacements and such.
Great point about expecting the unexpected and how the expected names are not usually picked.

Well, with that in mind, I once again will go back to what I said earlier and suggest Andrew-Lee Potts, who I personally only know from the TV series Alice, which is a show I do not particularily care about, but I did see a few episodes with Andrew as the Mad Hatter, and at that time I already thought he could be a good Doctor.

Catherine Zeta Jones? Really? Before Smith was anointed to replace David Tennant at the start of 2009, about 16 months before his series began, pundits were busy tipping the likes of James Nesbitt, Catherine Tate, Catherine Zeta Jones and Paterson Joseph, and even David Walliams.

My vote would be for a black Doctor Who, namely Paterson Joseph (Peep Show's Alan Johnson).
