I just can't get my head around this whole LI-love in the community. I never cared for the LI's myself and I found most of them completely cheesy, forced and annoying.

Liara is one fo the most annoying things in the whole trilogy. She has her moments, but I just can't stand her. Liara fans with their blue babies irk me to death.

Tali is a cool character until she starts to have a crush on Shepard in ME2 and treats him like some movie star. From that point on she start to get extra annoying until she realizes that she doesn't stand a chance. In ME3 she is good old Tali again. The Garrus-Tali relationship is a nice little side story though.

Miranda... Yvonne is a beautiful woman, but oh boy, did they screw up her beauty in ME! Plus I was never a fan of the cold, calculating femme-fatale turning out to be a soft little girl cliche. I always found her character completely out of place and forced. Miranda fanatics irk me just as much as Liara- and Talimancers.

Jack - She's okay, even if another usual cliche: annoying bad girl turns out to be a lonely, hurt little girl inside who's very slow to trust, but when she opens up becomes the passionate but softy lover. Wouldn't pick her but at least that relationship has some level of humor and a ironic high school feel to it.

Ashley - She's the only one I can imagine being the lover of this scarred war veteran Shepard guy. Ashley is another soldier who understands how things go in the military and during a war. Her strong family history, the military career which suffers because of her grandfather's past, her faith in things, and conservative views and her healthy level of skepticism about what Shepard does (she's the only one who's not behaving like Shepard's cheerleader) makes her feel like a real person. With her Bioware keeps it real and not so much serve the fans' teenage dreams like with the other relationship options. If I ever give Shepard a relationship, it's Ashley. She's the most fitting for the Shepard I like to play, the Shepard who's not a full paragon, cheesy hero man, nor the full renegade too bad-ass to be true jerk, but stays in the grey human zone.

So it's either Ashley or none (none means, doing the consort in ME1, Jack and Kelly in ME2 and Allers in ME3...and of course tries to propose Traynor).

I can't speak for the gay-romances, since I'm straight.

So it's:

ME1: none/Ashley
ME2: none/Ashley
ME3: none/Ashley

Not as great a choice as Mitsuru but a good one nonetheless.

Yeah so far I like Mitsuru more than Yukari tbh (Dat Tara Platt:wub:). It's just that I'm probably closer to being able to date Yukari. If I max out my academics and ace an exam in time I may choose Mitsuru.

I'm torn between the two myself tbh. I'm only two months in though, so I still have plenty of time to pick.

Mitsuru is great, but I like the story better with Yukari as the LI. Especially if you end up playing The Answer.

Hmmmm... well, not really, now that I think about it. Most games either make them too cheesy, forced or uninteresting. Even The Witcher 2's romance subplot is somewhat dull and unnecessary, especially if you read the books which introduces a much more interesting and more complicated romantic life for Geralt: his relationship with Yennefer. Compared to that the romance with Triss is very weak.

You've seen my opinion about the ME romances. To me most of them ain't cut it. Actually the romantic subplots (even Ashley's one) are pretty boring and unnecessary. I just don't feel any attachment to those characters in that regard. I mean it's hard to believe that Shepard falls in love with any of them. They are not well established. Something's missing. Maybe the human element and the complications. They are too simple, sterile and predictable: you can't lose anything in these relationships. I mean, all of these LIs just fall into Shepard's hands just by deciding that you like the chosen npc and talk to it. Everybody is in love with Shepard, which makes it pretty boring: the Normandy is pretty much a loveboat with many Shepard-fan cheerleaders on board (except Ashley, with her you can screw it up, if you want to... she can even start to hate you: in that regard she is the most well developed character of the whole series).

I've yet to see a game which presents an interesting romantic subplot. Somhow it works better with books and films  not all of them of course). Game producers still yet to learn how to write a cool, exciting and original love story.

But if you can tell me any examples for the oppostie, please do.

Well, here is how romance subplots interest me:

1. Do I like both characters on their own as well-developed characters?
2. Does the romance reflect some interaction of personality, some form of chemistry either volatile or beneficial that deepens our understanding of the characters?
3. Is the actual writing quality good?

Mass Effect romances generally fill all three requirements, with some lapses in dialogue quality here and there. The fulfillment of these requirements far outweighs the fact that it's too easy to get into a romance, or too difficult to eff it up, which I think are your two main complaints above.

As for other games, the list is pretty short of games that even try. Shadow Hearts: Covenant? Chrono Cross? Metal Gear Solid 3?

You bet.

I'm manly enough to admit "romances are great". Well, if someone has actually an idea how to write a decent romance.

For my canon Shepard its either Ashley or none. I've tried other romances with experimental shepards so I don't sacrifice the integrity of my playthroughs but no matter what LI ive always chosen, I always go back to Ash. I can't stand Liara, I can't stand that Bioware took away from other romances to make her this adorable babydoll shes supposed to be but in reality shes not. Tali is okay in Mass Effect 2 but shes too much of a typical damsel in destress not to mention shes another alien who kisses Shepard's bootstraps and worships the ground he walks on. Miri and Jack are also cool but Miri's an ice queen who has more ass than she does personality. At the end of the day, Ashley's the one who works out for me. Shes definitely not a typical romance, she and my Shepard come from similar backgrounds and are alliance true and through.

1) My shotgun.

2) Garrus

3) Yeah, Garrus cause Garrus.

That's my most common. I've done most of the romances (except a Liara in 2 romance. If I romance Liara, I tend to get distracted by Jack cause eeeeeee, Jack.) Maybe next time around I'll manage to stick to Liara. Hahah, yeah right. IT COULD HAPPEN.

For DudeShep, my most common is Liara/Jack/Jack. I haven't played that many dudeSheps, but it's been a while, so I've had a chance to give it a whirl with a few characters.

Edit: Oh, shenkies. Reading back through this thread, I totally posted in it and said the same dang thing. So yeah, a year later, it hasn't changed.

Garrus and Jack, heck yeah. I like characters who feel like they're every bit as terrifying as Shepard. I usually try to pick a LI based on Shepard personality and covering combat weaknesses of my chosen spec for the playthrough, since it's fun to have your love interest along. Garrus is overpowered in the actual game. Jack's overpowered in cutscenes.  :D
