I generally avoid the romance mechanic, to me it feels too much out of a character for an examplry navy officer too engage in totally random romantic relationships. ,Only a handfull of my more flamboyant Shepard characters have a somewhat reasonable justification for engaging in a romantic relationship.

Fair point. I suppose in many ways, Shepard is/can be extremely unprofessional. xD
I like that they do at least acknowledge the romances are against the military's rules in Mass Effect 1, but it seems to be forgotten in Mass Effect 2 and 3. Though, I suppose working for Cerberus, there are different rules. And Shep is a Spectre anyway, so I'd imagine that s/he wouldn't be limited by ordinary protocol - as long as the fraternization didn't affect the mission.
That's just my take on it, though.

You don't know Naval Officers then, man.
The military is a lot like high school.

I think we're talking about the wrong navy here, then.

U.S. Navy? The best Navy in the world?

What's your rationale and level of experience behind this?

I've taught that the military is an organisation of dicipline and professionalism. Having a romantic relationship, among others, could potentionlly affect one's judegement and as a result limit their ability to do their duty.
For dude shep I tend to lean towards Liara or Ashley, I have a few that went for Tali.
For femshep definitely gotta go with Garrus.

Oh, civilians always have that view of us. In truth, we're only partly that. We're also children who play **** fuck games and enjoy being paid psychopaths.

Not sure if serious.
Absolutely serious.

lol oh brother
Prove it.
Prove what?
Prove what?
Your statements, obviously.
What do you want me to prove? That the military isn't the unflinching, unemotional, stuffy jerkasses who don't know how to have fun? If you think they are, I and 2 million fellow American servicemen laugh heartily.

Shepard is also a spectre which means there are regulations that can be ignored. Also in the middle part of the trilogy Shepard isn't even a part of alliance.
In ME1 no one,
In ME2, Miranda
and in ME3, Miranda again.
