Anything that broke immersion and stifled roleplaying would effectively 'ruin' it for me.
Both games.. break the fourth wall from time to time, shouldn't that already break the immersion?
No, I think that it would take a very drastic issue to fully break the fourth wall. Much as I have a classic love/hate relationship with DA:II, I (personally) run into relatively few areas that 'break the fourth wall', and I'd be hard pressed to think of any glaring ones in DA:O. To be honest most of DA:IIs 'breakers' occur late in Act 3, after the 'Best Served Cold' quest, during which it becomes far too apparent that illogical events are talking place, upon which my character has no real control.
But of course this differs between individuals doesn't it?
If you really stop to consider it, there are a whole range of illogical game mechanics within both games (and indeed most RPGS). How can The Warden's party travel so quickly between various regions of Ferelden? Why can he/she only ever take three companions with them? How can humans survive direct hits from arrows/flames/swords How can the party carry so much stuff around with them? I'm sure you can think of many more besides.
In situations such as this, I have no problems rendering this kind of thing down to 'symbolic representations of events'. and head-canoning my way through areas and events that are not intrinsically shown within the game. Head canon dictates that the party camp is not constantly in the same location, and is packed up and moved to the outskirts of wherever the current mission is taking place. Head canon tells me that in reality, all or most party members are present, and have perhaps been split into two teams to cover ground faster - That kind of thing.
Illogical, and not fully realistic perhaps, but none of it 'breaks the fourth wall', as I seem to automatically that certain game mechanics are required within a videogame; and thus my mind subjects them to 'symbolic representation of events'.
