Whereas I care not about the missile launcher on my back and engage in heavy melee at the match start because I think everyone is being friendly... when, really, they're just removing their missile launcher.

I'm all for friendly melee fests but that first heavy melee of the match is pretty much always for ditching the missile launcher. Sometimes this ritual is replaced with a trip to a ladder.

Removing the launcher is a ritual. It also shows you if you're playing with BSNers in PuGs. The guy who hides his launcher? He'll have your back and carry the team with you.
