I really dislike losing so I always try to clutch the wave as long as I have at least one squadmate who seems to be genuinely trying.
Granted that there is no accurate way to tell if a player is actually leeching or just having a bad match, I still believe when you have played the game long enough, you can generally tell if its:
1) a silver player trying to move up to gold - usually equips midlevel rares or low level URs with high-level consumables, sensible use of gels and rockets, helps with objectives but occasionally goes down especially on later waves
2) a clueless newbie - uses low level common/uncommon weapons, level 1 gear or no gear at all, will probably use up all his gels and ops packs early, goes down multiple times every wave
3) a leecher - doesn't use equipment on gold+ (even the common level 1 stuff) despite having a decent N7 and CP rating, never uses gels or rockets even on objective waves, worst ones will get themselves sync-killed on purpose every wave or simply hide in a faraway corner of the map the entire match.
These are by no means a concrete criteria (there are exceptions of course) but they are based on personal experience.
