When Zevran is recruited, he doesn't have any skill in lockpicking (mechanical expertise). Yet he is a rogue. For me, a rogue isn't a true rogue unless he can fulfill the classical D&D thieving skills of picking locks and finding and disarming traps. So when I recruit Zevran, he stays in camp for at least 3 more level-ups, sipping Antivian brandy and learning to pick locks before I take him along.

Another option would be to take a party with 2 rogues, either taking Leliane and Zevran both along, or having a rogue Warden. But I myself don't like taking 2 rogues very much, my favourite party-setup usually consists of 1 warrior, 1 rogue, 1 mage and 1 Shale.

So what do you like to do with Zevran, in regards to the chests you find? Do you take him along with a second rogue, do you let him stay in camp until he has enough points in mech expertise, do you leave chests locked or does your Zevran not do much more than sipping brandy and chatting in Camp? My Zevran usually ends up doing just that, being camp decoration.

I have my game modded not to preselect companion specializations and skills, so I can build him exactly as I like right from the start.

Before that, I did prefer to keep Leliana with me for a bit while working on his lockpicking skills.

Funny thing is, I play Dragon Age unmodded (except for the Chantry boots and Healing bonus fixes), but I play Baldur's Gate modded to the max, so to speak. Might try modding later perhaps.

For me it's either both Zevran and Leliana in the party, or a respec'ed Zevran. In most playthroughs, he's more of a camp decoration though. Posted Image

Modding can make all the difference in DAO- should really look into it. Stuff like removing those yellow/red combat circles or all the different modded hairstyles and colors or a device that dyes outfits/weapons or optionally hides helmets- loads more. Or in this case there's the Respecialization mod (which gives you a potion to redo all the drinker's stats) or (my preference) the NoFollowerAutoLevel mod (which simply reduces NPCs to Level 0 at recruitment) both of which work sort of like Level1NPCs except that you get to choose the new stat assignment in-game rather than before each game install. This way if you want to travel with Zevran you don't have to endure a poor build that he comes with. Besides, Zev actually claims to be able to pick locks when you recruit him and then can't, so it's only poetic justice to change his stats. >:-)
