One more topic I start today, for being curious how other peoples play DragonAge. The question being, do you give your NPC's a second specialization (or a first, in the case of Sten)? Leliane, Morrigan, Oghren, Zevran, Wynn all are specialized when they join you (sometimes even against the rules the 1st specialization is picked at level 7, but at least there's a background story that's make it logical with Alistair, with Leliane and Morrigan).

Anyway, you can give your NPC's a second specialization at level 14 and my question is do you have certain preferences for the specific NPC's?

For me, 2 characters almost always get the same second specialization:
Alistair gets to be Champion, even though he can be quite shy and insecure, Berserker and Reaver seem even worse fits to me,
Morrigan gets to be a Bloodmage, I think it suits her lust for power, effect and disregard of negative setbacks for others.

Other NPC's I'm less steadfast and sure about.

If I harden Leliana, I'll use the Assassin specialization. I think Duelist works for Zevran, considering where you learn it from. I give Arcane Warrior to Wynne mainly through elimination (makes more sense than Shapeshifter or especially Blood Mage).

Zevran - Duelist, obviously.
Morrigan - Arcane warrior, to enhance the up close and personal style of Shapeshifter. I don't really see her as a blood mage. She was raised alone and so would've had to use her own blood to fuel spells. I don't think her survival instincts would've allowed for that, far too risky. I think she would, however, appreciate an obscure but quite powerful form of combat.
Leliana - Ranger, just because neither of the others actually suits her and it's useful.
Sten - Reaver, the weirdness of the spec just goes with his Otherness in my mind.
Alistair - Champion, it's the only one that fits.
Oghren - Champion, due to the others not making sense.
Wynne - Arcane Warrior, for the same reasons.

Yes, I forgot about Wynn: for me as well it's Arcane Warrior for Wynn as the others don't fit too well.

I shamelessly give all warriors the Champion bit- Alistair, Oghren, Sten, and Loghain. Boring... but useful! Oghren might make sense with Reaver, but then he'd be as tank-deficient as the Daces in Amgarrak...

Morrigan is obviously not against blood magic, but I can't see her as a blood mage either for some reason. Her interests seem more political (kill mom and get the dragonbaby) than arcane (personal power through magic). But it's a possibility... Shamelessly I usually just dump Spiritual Healer on her because she's a lot more useful that way. Despite retaining her Shapeshifter status I turned her into a spider since the first game I met her.

Wynne I usually just never give a 2nd spec anymore because nothing seems to suit her. The Arcane Warrior ability is supposed to come from ancient elves and be a special and rare power, something you learn from a formless shape in a phylactery, so Wynne getting it just feels gratuitous. Where would she get it from? Wynne in shining armour? Plus she's got enough extras with her "rise from the dead" routine she does. I do like the idea of making her a blood mage and hearing her bemoaning blood mages the rest of the game. >:-) Funny the game doesn't prevent it. Have to try that one time...

Zev and Lel I generally make archers who specialize in picking pockets, lockpicking, and scouting, injecting them with as much Cunning as is available. They generally both end up Bards, with Lel being a Dualist as well since it also applies to archers. Not sure I see the urban-based Orlesian being much of a ranger. I don't play Zev as a melee fighter- or much of a fighter at all- so being a Dualist doesn't make much sense with Bard as an option... though I admit a life of singing and mandolin-strumming might be a bit of a stretch for the Antivan assassin...

Alistar: Reaver(due to a comics), Berserker(due to his anger towards Loghain) or Champion(his noble birth right)

Sten: Reaver(his guilt over his squad and the family he killed), Berserker(his RAGE over his failures), Templar(his quanri instincts about Mages), Champion(he is supposed to be a team leader for his squad)

Zevran: Duelist(due to his past with Isbella) is the best for him

Ogrhen: Reaver or Champion due to his past but a Full Berserker before he does either spec

Wynne: Full Healer before Arcane Warrior

Morrigan: Either blood Mage or Arcane Warrior

Leliana: No Clue

Shale: Shale

Dog: DOG

Alistair: Champion. It fits him well enough and is totally built for a tank.

Morrigan: Blood Mage or nothing. Blood Mage fits with her (she's certainly not above it - the Dark Ritual is a blood magic spell). But I rarely bother to fill it even if I do give it to her.

Zevran: Duelist. Especially fitting since he is friends with Isabela.

Leliana: Assassin works with her dodgy past.

Sten: Berserker (fits his rage) or Champion (his noble warrior thing).

Oghren: Champion (well, he was the greatest fighter in Orzammar at one point) but fill Berserker and 2H first.

Wynne: Nothing. The other magic lines don't suit her at all, and there are plenty of fun vanilla spells to pick anyway.

Wynne makes a stellar AW if you know what you are doing. In fact, if I am not particularly attached to Alistair, she becomes my main tank/healer while Lel, Shale and I plunk away with 80+% chance to crit.

Give her the mage tombs, and then look at the AW threads and build her that way. Got to the Tower as soon as possible if you are on the console or whatever so she doesn't autolevel out of the ability to become one.

If you are on the PC just get it so the companions come as blank slates, and make her a spirit healer to start, as she is, but with better talents, and then AW when that comes along and you've gathered some gear. She rocks.

If I harden Lel, assassin, otherwise duelist, she's a big city gal, ranger doesn't fit.

Zevran gets duelist by default

Alistair if hardened gets Zerker

Sten gets Zerker and Reaver (two spec Sten Mod), but if you don't have mods, just Zerker. The first two skills in Reaver are very useful, you can forget the last two and it's still a great spec.

Oghren, well, if you redeem him to any degree then Champion fits, it's what he would have been if not a drunkard, Templar doesn't fit, but he can do Reaver as well.

Morrigan, well, just do yourself a favour and grab a shapeshifting mod, or even just combat tweaks and she can do okay. There are more than enough mage spells that you can just avoid that tree altogether and give her blood mage though, it's the only spec that fits with her personality. You can't change Morrigan, you can just make her like you.

In the end, it kind of depends on which type of character I am playing.

Alistair - Champion and Templar were invaluable, made him my bodyguard throughout made of my playthroughs.
Sten - Always had a hard time picking, though I often just gave him Templar because of his mage rage.
Wynne - Spirit healer and Arccane warrior. Arcane warrior kept her alive that bit longer in sticky situations.
Morrigan - Shapeshift and Arcane Warrior. I didn't ever get blood magic, which may have been useful, but I lived in fear of her stealing health from squad to fuel her magic. Didn't need to give others another reason to hate her.
Zevran - Duelist and Assassin if I could help it, he looks like a quick and lethal kinda guy.
Leliana - Bard and Ranger, considering that Leli was always an archer in my playthroughs I thought summoning an animal to defend her while she used her bow was a good idea. Maybe have been trying to create a Disney warrior princess considering her singing voice.
Shale - Haven't played with her enough to have a preferance.
Oghren - Berserker and Templar if I could, dwarves are meant to be resistant to magic, Templar felt like adding to that natural resistance abit more.
