As one can see, not a whole lot of difference. In addition, having realistic armor doesn't mean that it has to be very bulky looking. Here's an example of armor that's relatively light.

Quite the departure from the rather blatantly sexualized outfits that some characters like Miranda wear into combat. This is also present to a lesser degree in males, such as Jacob's outfit. Would you prefer a more functional and militaristic art style for combat outfits of squadmates? I honestly would, as I see no reason for Ashley to be wearing the kind of suit she's wearing. Miranda is an even bigger offender.
EDIT: What I'm not asking for is to copy and paste current miltiary fatigues and uniforms. As people have said, that would be boring and we have enough modern military FPS around already. To borrow a phrase from another poster here, I'd say a "happy medium" would be the N7 Demolisher armor. It's a set that's distinctly feminine while still looking practical and functional.
