As it stands, armor could probably be removed wholesale and I wouldn't mind that much.

From a lore perspective, your kinetic barriers are going to do a heck of a lot more then armor will to protect you, without restricting your movements the way rigid armor does. I expect in the game world, Miranda's swimwear actually makes more sense then Ashley's armor. Dodging shots works. Your armor isn't very useful against hyper-velocity projectiles.

The main reason it's an issue is because armor had the important secondary function of being a spacesuit. Kinetic Barriers might protect you against bullets - but toxic atmospheres it probably won't help against, and it certainly won't help you much against the cold of space.

It's more than just protecting from projectiles, though. Kinetic barriers won't help much if you fall off a cliff, will it? (Not being sarcastic here, I'm just on my way to bed and my brain is halfway there already :P) But even if they do, you still need thermal clips and usually a lot of various equipment to handle different situations. And your suit needs to be able to hold on to your guns when you're not equipping them. This is just off the top of my head, there might even be more reasons why armour is a very valid choice, if not necessity, for soldiers.
Don't know enough about physics to argue against the uselessness of armour vs. bullets in the Mass Effect universe, but I'm sure they could invent some kind of coating that would protect you, even if just minimally, against bullets. It would seem odd if suits don't give you an advantage in any way against projectiles. Maybe your shields would be stronger if your suit could carry heavier shield generators?

That fails to meet a lot of the requirements people have been griping about here. She still obviously has a large chest. And there's no 'compartments' for crap. And I'm not sure how a helmet would be integrated.

And it probably actually was pretty damn hard.

To me, it's a happy medium. And it's not hard to imagine compartments and a streamlined helmet to accompany that.

I thought about that, too.

I thought, ME1's light armor made a bit of sense. Some light plating, kinetic barriers and a jumpsuit underneath for mechanical counterpressure in space.

ME armour would probably be like steel helmets in the 20th century - there to stop shrapnel and indirect hits, rather than to stop direct hits from a bullet.

It also serves as a medi-gel dispensing system. And can boost strength and help you hold your gun steady in the face of recoil, I guess.

Certain squadmembers from ME2 and 3 had armor that was both awesome and iconic yet practical and believable. They should have carried this idea for all squadmembers.

The artists of the Mass Effect team are skilled enough to do it.

Oh yes, definitely. It's just a question of deciding which players to appeal to. I hope they'll choose differently with the next Mass Effect game.

What players to appeal to? I am certain Bioware could still have catsuits into the game, they would just show up on the ship or civilian areas.

Save for those with an anemic imagination, I don't see why it would be hard in the least.

I actually think this would do a disservice to ME....if everyone is wearing such similar clothes, it really is going to look like a generic shooter especially if the team loadout is soldier shep, ashley and vega

How is professional military gear and equipement a disservice? Isn't immersion and roleplay one of the big stelling points of ME series?

If it's stupid, but it works, then it's not stupid. Military gear is crappy looking, but it does the job and it does it well.

The MRAP looks like ****, but if it stopped a sniper's bullet with the triple glass layer from killing my driver, then I'm fine with it looking like ****.

And why not? It's distinctly feminine (maybe a bit too thin), but not sexualized in any way, and looks practical.

You're going to argue with a straight face that the armor in ME 2 and 3 looked bad and the armor in ME 1 looked good?

Very well indeed, with the understanding of course that this is all About art design rather tegen graphical quality.
