I'm trying to remember the name of this movie that was sort of "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" set in Japanese occupied Korea if I recall, anybody know what I'm talking about?

sounds like "The Good, the bad, the weird"

Now, I've heard of this one, and after watching the trailer, it looks really good. A (South Korean) western? Heck yes.

Speaking of martial arts movies from Far East, I am not a big fan of the classical stuff where everyone flies around and does flips like a spastic monkey on drugs.
(I know that is a part of the tradition and folklore, but it just doesn't appeal to me).

Now on the other hand, someone already mentioned The Raid (Serbuant maut) in this thread:
The Raid - Final Fight

Some amazing choreography right there.

EDIT: Also, the old Tiger Cage series was my favourite. Donnie Yen kicks ass.B)

I like The Good The Bad and the Weird especially the actor Lee Byung-hun who star in some of my favorite shows and movies like I Saw the Devil,  and I.R.I.S. He also stars in some American movies now... He plays as Storm the white ninja in G.I. Joe movies and I think he is doing a couple movies with Bruce Willis in Red 2 and a Die Hard movie. I don't know if they are out yet or not haven't been paying attention.

Wait wait... there is a Part II of Red Cliff? Is that after the battle when Cao Cao escapes or something?

Old Boy, Hard Boiled, Internal Affairs, and what was the latest Indonesian one that was all in one building? Anyway, all great movies.

The one you're thinking of sounds like The Raid:Redemption a few people have mentioned.

I can understand that, but also being an extension of classic Chinese opera, I think it's a beautiful art form. Now, getting 'beautiful' out of the way, much of the top tier classic stuff has some of the best fight choreography I've seen to date. So much of it has personality, and is just very memorable, as outlandish as it can sometimes be.

From what I understand looking up the matter, Red Cliff was 2 parts in Asia, but released all as one in the states at 148 minute run time.

Anyway, here's a new one from South Korea that looks quite fun.

The Huntresses trailer 2013

Plot - Set in the Joseon Period, three beautiful musketeers fight against a powerful group who tries to overturn the royal family and gain absolute power. The leader of the Beautiful Three Musketeers is Jin-Ok (Ha Ji-Won), a smart and righteous woman. Hong-Dan (Gang Ye-Won) is the only married woman among the three women. Ga-Bi (Son Ga-In) is the youngest among the musketeers and excels at fighting. Asian Wiki

Boy, is the American remake a pile of shizzz, though.

Welcome to Dongmakgol is terrific, too.

And (almost) everything by Chan-wook Park. And Kim Ji-woon.

I refuse to ever taint my life with a remake of My Sassy Girl.

It is absolutely perfect the way it is.

Hilariously bad remake.  Just imagine everything that's good about the original, Americanized and hollowed out. Its one saving grace ...

I now have to rewatch it just to forget that there ARE remakes.

That movie speaks to my hopeless romantic soul.

For those of a more experimental bent, those of stronger constitutions: have you seen Citizen Q? I found it both more touching and more disturbing than Requiem for a Dream, my previous "unsafe" movie experience.

Japanese cinema remakes a lot of novels as film at the moment but I really enjoy Korean cinema. They're a little less rigid with logic and actually make self-parodies of the notion of incredibly bizarre plots. For instance one film (who's title escapes me at the moment) featured rip offs of John Wayne, Han Solo and James Bond who were all masters of physical combat as well as armaments who had to escort a train to Seoul and were periodically attacked by Cowboys, bandits, Native Americans, Zulu esque people and two distinctly different races of aliens. It was fantastic fun!

I'm more horror fan and got sucked into Asian cinema through the horror movies. Though I had seen and loved Hard Boiled and the Killer well before. The Chinese horror movies were always a little to campy for me and before Ringu and Kairo the horror genre in Japan was bordering on sickening - Evil Dead Trap was good and gory but the Guinea Pig franchise and Red Room cross the line.

Both Battle Royals 1&2 are favourites (love book and manga as well), Audition, original one missed call and if you can find it the best horror movie in years is Noroi:the curse.

As for Korea the Vengeance trilogy is good, though Lady Vengeance is my favourite and a lot of there horror stuff has been great recently (Tale of two sisters, I saw the devil, Phone, Nightmare).

But saying all that it started with my obsession with Ringu. I have all the movies including the 'real' part 2 Rasen, the Korean version, US versions and 2 of the Japanese TV series only one of which has subtitles so I have no idea what is happening. The book trilogy, manga, Dreamcast game and the OST. Weirdly also have seen the soft version of the gay parody in which you see the video and turn gay in seven days - actually very funny. It's weird obsession yes I agree :)

At moment hoping for a decent blu-ray release of the Korean remake of the Towering Inferno (original is my favourite and most watched movie) which due out soon on UK DVD it looks great.

If it counts- Grave of the Fireflies

I cannot ever watch that movie again, that was the most depressing thing ever
