I've decided to give it a try since it's free to play. Anyone else play it? How is it?

Its not bad, especially since its free! I think its greatly improved since launch when I originally played it. LOTRO is still my fave though.

Okay I think I got it. It's bad. I'll give it a try nonetheless but it will be an unenthusiastic trial. It's downloading at the moment.

It's not terrible, but it's got a couple major problems.
For one, they stretched 20 levels into 100, which means the majority of your level ups mean almost nothing.
For another, you basically have to either buy 32 point build and/or Drow or end up playing a character for quite a while so that you can make a character that's actually useful.
There's no prestige classes, so certain class combinations simply don't work (multi-classing a caster more than a level or 2 = fail.)
Finally, unless your playing a caster type, the gameplay stays essentially the same from level 1 to 20. You get a few perks that are useful (Haste Boost) but other than that, it's just hold down left mouse and swing away, and maybe use a few clickies.

Could have been a lot better in my opinion. For one thing, where are the mounts?!

Heh. For me, Anarchy Online was THE definitive sci-fi MMORPG especially since there are very few around. I agree that it has a steep learning curve but overall reading up on guides and asking a lot of questions on OOC channel would help you as a newcomer. Also, expect that your first 'toon' would be somewhat crappy since you'll want to give yourself room for trial and error. I'm hoping you'll reconsider since AO has a lot to offer folks who are interested in a good sci-fi story, immersive setting and fun combat, but I do understand if it's not your cup of tea. Plus, in the long run I feel that the community numbers have dwindled so the world may seem somewhat empty at times (just my own perceptions though, and plus I don't play in a guild so that may account for the isolation).Funkcase wrote...

I suppose you could go for EVE Online, another sci-fi MMO, but it's a very different system that doesn't quite involve direct character combat since what you do is fly around in spaceships and harvest material from planets. Also, there's a subscription fee involved compared to AO's free-to-play model. But you may very well find yourself enjoying it, and EVE has received rave reviews from its fans, so feel free to give it a try.

Cheers for the feedback, i will give it another go! Tbh it is my first mmorpg so that might be why i am finding it difficult, i am sure i will get the hang of it soon.
