Was it screwing over the Krogans and maintining the genophage which all but certifies their extermination? OR curing the Genophage and allowing Wrex or Wrev to forge a new destiny for the Krogan?
Was the ending seeing your boy Grunt earn the respect of Arlak Company?
Was it Jack developing in a person that can forge a relationship with people and view herself as a person rather than an experiment?
Was the ending being a big enough badass that you talk down Admiral Xen and the Quarian forces from attacking the Geth therefore forging an armistance to a 200 year war between the creators and the created?
Was the ending the possibility that Qaurian children can potentially play on Rannoch without a biosuit?
OR was the ending a bunch of flashing lights, star children, and poor choices?
If its the later then yes the ending was bad but to the former, I think Bioware did a wonderful job wrapping up character plots.

This is why there is still hope for mass effect 3 fans.
The whole game is the ending, not just the last 10 minutes which bioware improved greatly with the EC. If bioware had released the EC originally, there would be no complaining. Mass Effect 3 fans can be proper d*ckheads at times.
The last 5 minutes of starwars shows luke partying with some motherf*cking ewoks and looking at ghosts in the flames.... the last 5 minutes of ME3 shows shepard's heroic, selfless sacrifice, the profound effect her or his valourous deeds have on the rest of the galaxy and it shows the crew of people you've grown to know and love mourning a friend... but it also leaves the viewer with a sense of hope; their stories and lives are not over, and amidst the devastation there is hope. Yet, apparently the last 5 minutes of starwars didn't ruin the entire series, even though it's hardly the best ending they could have made.
The ending is about what is IMPLICIT, not what is explicitly displayed... it's left for the fans to make their own decisions about.... WHICH IS WHAT THEY WANTED ALL ALONG.... Irony, they all seem incapable of "seeing the wood through the trees". So much of the endings and the aftermath is left to your imagination because that in many regards is a far more profound way of ending the series. "Push big red button to kill all rippas so everyone can live happily evah after" is about all the complexity that the average mass effect fan can handle... which is dumb. The EC endings did the series justice, the majority of mass effect 3 fans are just too close minded to see that.
People who say the endings suck NEED to read more books; because they clearly lack the perceptive abilities to interpereret the endings in the way that the bioware writers did.

I have read hundreds of book, few where as bad as the last part of ME3. Plus if you as a writer write someting that is suppose to be read by others, but that only the writers understand, you have failed with you task.Annomander wrote...

Anyway I wish I'd seen sooo many more characters. I'd trade the Shaman for anything original any day. More Cerberus would be top of my list, Cerberus Engineer built around support (like Shield Pylon or Turret), another Salarian, Geth Vanguard and possibly an Asari Soldier.
Eh...don't know about Geth biotics and I'm pretty sure the Justicar is a biotic Soldier, but I'd have totally sprung for anything original over some of the weekly Retaliation kits.
Can you imagine if it worked like that?!? That we could put unsatisfactory kits up for trade? I'd trade like four of 'em in a heartbeat. The Kroshaman, Volprotector, Vorcha Hunter, and Broguard would be outta here!

I'd have loved if Reckoning had at least one original kit per race. Like, if they'd added a kit for Salarians, Quarians, Drell, Vorcha, Volus, Ex-Cerberus, Batarians, and Asari on top of the ones they included in Reckoning. That would've been sick...

For example, your very first mission in ME1 on Eden Prime, recovering the prothean beacon, makes no sense. Remember how Joker said that this mission didn't need a Spectre on board? He was totally right. The original mission was to take the Normandy to Eden Prime, run a few tests on the new stealth system, then pick up the beacon and return. The problem here is that Shepard has nothing to do during the entire mission. How was Nihlus supposed to judge Shepard's performance? Eden Prime was a peaceful planet, no one expected any combat. So unless Nihlus knew about Saren and the Geth long before ... the entire mission makes no sense.
Another point: Remember the 3 main missions after becoming a Spectre? 1. Find Liara, 2. Emergency signal from a human colony on Feros attacked by Geth and 3. Geth sightings on Noveria.
Let's not mention that no one knew anything about the Geth before Shepard entered the hangar...
There are at least 50 more such examples that can be found without trying hard.
In the end... the entire storyline only works out because the writers never bothered to look at it from a different perspective. If they had, then they would have realized that Saren went through years of trouble instead of simply doing the logical thing. Saren could have enabled the Citadel relay long before Shepard ever became a topic... but that would not have made for a good story.
I enjoyed the ME trilogy a lot but it is not perfect. Funny dialogue and interesting characters can distract one from the flaws only so long.
The main problem with the ending was that all the choices were crap.
Destroy: You kill the reapers, EDI and the Geth and lose the Reaper's immense knowledge. After finally reconciling the Quarians and the Geth, after seeing how the Quarians got their homeworld back, after seeing how they depend on the Geth for survival now... choosing Destroy would be at least a double xenocide and probably kill the Quarians, too. Btw... running/stumbling into an explosion wasn't really necessary, Shep.
Synthesis: Makes no scientific sense. None. And while it's great that we get to keep the Reapers and their knowledge around... forcing life altering changes on an entire galaxy without asking for their consent first is ... kinda rapey. Btw... I really hate it when writers insert mysticism and pseudoscience into sci-fi. Didn't work for Matrix, didn't work here.
Control: The least of all evils. The war ends, the Reapers share their knowledge and help rebuild, no one dies. Oh, except Shepard. Because simply copying his/her mind was beyond the Catalyst, right? Disintegrating Shepard's body was much easier.
Refusal: The only option that was "realistic". You lose the war, the Reapers end the cycle and the next cycle defeats the Reapers once and for all thanks to Liara's time capsules.
It's not bad, it doesn't suck... but it's not great either. Sorry.

I would consider the ending completely inconsistent and out of place with the rest of the series. Shepard dies? Fine. Earth destroyed? Fine as well. The original ending was almost like EA forced them to wrap it up and they decided to go with the dumbest ending that they had. I did think the writing was pretty good up till the end but the wrap up felt completely out of place.

Mm no, the Shaman is needed for krogan players. I don't like it that much but I like other kits less

I disagree the last 5 minutes showed me that what I did for 100-130hrs over 3 games and all the choices I made didn't mean sh*t because some kid was going to let me make a blue red or green light with the relays and they'd be destroyed no matter what. The synthesis ending was terrible. For 3 games I was led to think reapers should be destroyed now suddenly some kid say's joining with them is the good ending. Whoever wrote that part was a moron. It took several thousand people and lots of web sites (some even raised money) to rip bioware a new bunghole for several weeks to get them to reluctantly create the extended cut which was ok .
If I want to reed a book and think I'll read one. Games are suppossed to be entertainment without needing to think and be left hanging. Bioware dropped the ball on the ending and if not for multiplayer it would have been a complete flop and long forgetten game. Amazon was letting people return the game due to the ****** poor ending.

Despite this being an old topic, and not even in the right forum area, I kind of agree with this guy. They tried to change the name of the game a little too suddenly for my taste.
ME1 ---> Destroy the Reapers!
ME2 ----> Destroy the Reapers!
ME3 ----> Destroy the Reapers!
Last five minutes of ME3 ---> Help the Reapers!
Honestly, I just don't like that kid. He came so far out of left field. Doesn't even seem like he belongs there. They could've presented the catalyst in a more believable way, make it more consistent with the universe instead of pulling a Deus Ex Machina on us and having some angel kid plainly spell out the choices. As far as the choices themselves, they were fine. Could've looked at Synthesis a little longer though. Seems like it'd be difficult to write a sequel with that ending. All that green...

Other than that, great ending.
p.s. Harbinger Beam would've been a better ending, even if it would fail to give value to the EMS number accumulated by one's playthrough... it would at least be consistent with the rest of the game and the rest of the trilogy.
p.s. Bioware writers... what was the point of EMS?
