I remember a dev talking about this a while back, but I don't remember exactly when it was or who it was. :/

I don't dare try to paraphrase it from memory because I know I'll get the details wrong.

It was stated multiple times you use minerals to go back to the Cerb base to refuel. What happens if you run out of Minerals? That is a good question.

Theres our answer. I wish there was a site just like Dragonagecentral where it was a search engine (much better then the one Bioware uses) That found Devs posts on whatever you were looking for.

I'm interested to see how this is handled.

I also wonder why we have to micromanage fuel now but other things were "steamlined" becasue they were "not fun." I think fuel is going to be more of an annoyance factor than a fun factor. Just an initial assessment of course.

I suspect fuel is a money sink.

I doubt we will have to micromanage fuel. It will be done automatically when ever you near a space station or mass relay or fuel depot.

It may be slightly annoying as you may not be able to go to every world in every system the moment you want too. (Which was nice in ME1, 95% of the time, once you cleared out a system, you never had to return.)

But yes, money sink I think it will clearly be.

If you run out, you've always got enough emergency reserves to get back to base

I'd say the system is a way of getting you to return to base, where exciting interactions and things can happen, more often, unsure if TIM's footing the bill, though it'd be nice of him to I don't think nice is one of his defining attributes

i guess adding fuel can make you feel the size of the galaxy in ME universe, the clusters didn't feel too far away from ME1 cuz you can jump from one end of galaxy to another without worrying about how much fuel you need.

Yeah, you just clicked your way from planet to planet in ME. I suppose this fuel mechanic will add to the Emotionally Engaging Exploration Experience.

Well it adds to the "true to the lore" experience since fuel and FTL discharge was mentioned in the codex but not implemented in the first game.

It was explained a long time ago that the fuel mechanic was based on discharging your drive. However to make it easier to understand it was called 'fuel' as basically that is what it does. Limits how far you can travel. The fusion reactor and so on do NOT run out of fuel its all on how far can you go before you have to discharge the drive or fry. If you do happen to 'run' out then basically its a free trip back to the base. However so far as I know we have not had the exact details of the mechanic explained to us other than when it was first previewed way back sometime around E3.

I want to know what the likeliness of running out is. Surely they wouldn't put you in a situation where you constantly had to refuel to go anywhere.

Because that's how Shepard rolls.

As far as I know, you don't refuel. You have to discharge your core after so long. You do that in various ways, but it is more like an overheat mechanic than a fuel mechanic. There are discharge stations, or you can go to a planet to discharge.

As positive or negative electric current is passed through an FTL drive core, it acquires a static electrical charge. Drives can be operated an average of 50 hours before they reach charge saturation. This changes proportionally to the magnitude of mass reduction; a heavier or faster ship reaches saturation more quickly.

If the charge is allowed to build, the core will discharge into the hull of a ship. All ungrounded crew members are fried to a crisp, all electronic system are burned out, and metal bulkheads may be melted and fused together.

The safest way to discharge a core is to land on a planet and establish a connection to the ground, like a lightning rod. Larger vessels like dreadnoughts cannot land and must discharge into a planetary magnetic field1.

As the hull discharges, sheets of lightning jump away into the field, creating beautiful auroral displays on the planet. The ship must retract its sensors and weapons while dumping charge to prevent damage, leaving it blind and helpless. Discharging at a moon with a weak magnetic field can take days. Discharging into the powerful field of a gas giant may require less than an hour. Deep space facilities such as the Citadel often have special discharge facilities for visiting ships.

From the in game codex.

Ah, I see. So I'm guessing we use up minerals and such when we get taken back to the Cerberus base ?

Nice FireFly reference there. I am interested in seeing how this new fuel system will work.

I figure it will be explained in the game. Not really a concern except for the 'tedious factor'.
