I don't remember that part about Dorian being an outcast. Just that he was a good guy and generally disliked how the magisters handled his country, and would like to see it change. Seeing Mae in such a role would not be odd.

Of course, if being an outcast is a requirement, then Mae is hardly an outcast. Unless something happens to her at the end of this comic?

A seemingly "good" but actually "evil" Magister companion would be much more interesting. Or at least, if a Magister is to be a companion, it would be much more interesting if their intention can be interpreted in multiple contradicting ways by different people. Successful examples of this are Morrigan, Loghain, Leliana, and (to a lesser extent) Anders and Merrill. I trust Gaider & Co. will continue on this path.

Moreover, 2 of the likely companions, Cullen and Cassandra, already have somewhat established personalities, and they are both on the "good", or at least "lawful" side. Adding a third lawful/good companion would be incredibly redundant.

It depends, largely, on what you mean by "lawful good", though, doesn't it? Mae seems to be a good person, and is generally lawful, but the laws she lives by are Tevinter's laws, which are not the same as Chantry law Cassandra may live by - and in some cases these laws/attitudes are going to be diametrically opposed to each other in really interesting ways.

Which is one of the reasons I want Mae, actually. She's a good person but she's also a person reaping the rewards of being near the top of a society that the Chantry tends to regard as a bit of a horror story. She's not "evil", but she also doesn't have any sort of problem with slavery, because she's from a society where that kind of thing is acceptable.

If she were a companion I imagine some people would think she was lovely and others would find her views absolutely abhorrent and hate her for it - she's not a black and white "good" character. Which is why she's interesting and would make a good companion, imo.

I liked Mae in the comics. I thought she was an interesting character and it would be good to see her in DA3 whether as a companion or an NPC.

Agree that characters from the books or comics shouldn't be companions. I've never read any of the books or comics nor should I have to.

To be honest you don't learn much about Mae in the comics.
Well she used to be married to Varric's cousin.Big deal.

It was way  worse for Loghain , much of his paranoia about Orlesians is explained in the novels.
He lose a freaking lot of depth as a character if you didn't read them.
And no one complained  about this.

I've read The Stolen Throne only recently. When I played Origins I found Loghain a decent character, but not much more. Only reading the book I really understood his motivations and where his depth was (and discovered how book plus game made for a very cool character indeed).

Of course I hate Loghain. I don't know why some people feel you need more to understand him . I don't . While I don't need more to understand why he loathed the Orlesians , that hatred justifiable as it was can't be used to tolerate his betrayal or gain sympathy for him imo.

I knew about the Sebastian substitution for Nathaniel, but Velanna was supposed to be in DA2 instead of Anders? Interesting. Anyone know the specifics?

It seems it was very much an early-in-development idea that got switched out before it went anywhere - but the source is here, 3rd paragraph from the bottom. I can see how it would have been an interesting variant on what we got, since it presumably would have skewed grievances against the Chantry more onto the side of treatment of elves rather than treatment of mages.

She was considered by the writers but they chose Anders.

I want Velanna back or at least more Keeper's spells :)

Maevaris will be great as companion too.

I didn't read the comics and I know that he is a mage. What kind of specialization he have? Spells?

These are some very good thoughts. Not at all compatible with how I imagined Mae turning into a companion could work, but I really like it nontheless! =)

Please don't mix up the L&G with the T in the context of LGBT~ ;) Here's a link for you.

I'm not sure I'd like to have any Magister as a companion, frankly - as cool as Mae seems from what we see, she's still a Magister, which pretty much goes hand in hand with 'slave owner,' among other things. I'd rather keep Mae where she is - a character whom I haven't seen enough of to dislike, because I'm pretty sure if I learned more about her, I would.

I see no meaningful distinction. Both set of laws are systematically oppressive in nature and superstitious in spirit. It's like the difference between cow manure and horse manure. The composition may differ slightly but the purpose is exactly the same.

It takes the same kind of bone-headed self-righteousness for a character to uphold either set of these laws. Cassandra + Cullen are more than enough - we need more Rogue-ish (as in personality, not skillset) characters among companions.

Plus Mae would need a suitable voice actor like...Tim Curry?

I'd be down for having Mae in the party. Though my only complaint would be the difficulty I'd have in crafting a protagonist that's hotter than her. ;)

I don't want a 'good hearted' magister. I want one who will beat the crap out of anyone and has no quams about owning slaves or killing them for blood magick rituals.

We have too many "ooo I'm good in a way" companions throughout the trilogy; closest we got was Morrigan. The rest were always whining about some thing if you did it wrong. Then DA2 came along and we got cute kind blood mage Merrill, Tevinter ex-slave and insane Anders. But all of them don't like it if you do certain things, all of the companions don't. You didn't get any 'darker morals' characters in DA2 and it annoyed me. I don't want that. I want a companion who doesn't care if you kill a bunch of refugess; hell they even encourage it so you can steal their stuff or harvest their organs.

If we do get a Magister, I don't want a lousy kind one. That would ruin it.

I think you'll like a certain potential qunari companion if he ends up making it into the game, though I always find it bizarre that people genuinely want to associate with psychopathic companions with no redeeming features at all. 'Lovable' violent rogues (hello, Wrex) are one thing, but I'd have to wonder whether writing a truly evil, amoral character is even a satisfying experience. It's also dreadfully boring, if they're a character with one shade of black and no nuances.

Part of why a good-hearted magister works is the subversion of players' preconceptions - it's a pretty unique 'hook' for a character if they're literally one of the only non-malevolent mages in the entire Imperium. Subverting tropes and expectations can be really interesting storytelling, and in my opinion a magister who ends up working against his entire background and country is FAR more an interesting character than a boring, cartoon villain who cackles wile harvesting organs from elven orphans.

It's so you'll get different experiences in roplay.

They are only "boring cartoon villians" if the DA team write them that way. You think Morrigan was that?

There's a bit of a stretch between companions that are interesting or relatable but who also like to slaughter refugees for fun and profit. Even Bioware's arguably morally dubious companions (Morrigan, Wrex, Jack, Canderous) had a human core, and weren't running around murdering innocent people who happened to cross their paths. I think a truly irredeemable companion would alienate a lot of people.

I struggle to see how a genuinely evil party member like the one you describe could ever be written well enough to be an interesting or entertaining companion. If they're charming or humorous one minute and performing blood magic rituals on slaves the next, the effect is going to be more schizophrenic or psychopathic than endearing. At the very least they're going to look absurdly, "I kill puppies for fun" villainous.

We already have a schizo via Anders, but I wouldn't mind a psychopathic companion. In DA2 all companions are 'good' to a point; they'll all complain if you kill someone who gets in your way barring a few (mainly Varric but even he gets grumpy with you.) It was way more balanced in DAO where you have a variety of opinions. In DA2 you had no such luck and the whining from Fenris and co pissed me off to no end when I played a sociopathic Hawke.

For what it's worth, I thought "One of Many" was a very interesting companion in NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer. He ("they") was pretty much as evil as it gets, but then, he was a rather special case (special snowflake, as they say), even by normal RPG companion standards. But there's nothing to say this hypothetical evil companion can't also be a special snowflake.
