Calling GI Experts, Please Help Me Understand Proxmimity Mines

Anyway, I read all about the various "best" builds for this character and it sounds like a ton of people swear by the proximity mines so I have mine up to "5". I once had rank 4 damage but switched to radius. Rank 5 I took damage taken.
My problem is that since I carry heavy guns, my power recharge speed is generally very slow so I don't have the opportunity to use proximity mine very often. Usually it's before each wave. If I do shoot one during the match, I'm then vulnerable as I can't cloak for a while. Even if I use a power efficiency module, it still isn't all that helpful with this. I've heard others say they basically used this as a grenade launcher but it doesn't even kill a marauder for me.
I started to think to myself, I use proxmity mine so little, I'm wasting the points I put into it and should just toss it out. Is that blasphemy? Please enlighten this poor soul.

Or you could always use the wraith/claymore for sniping.

More generally you should always use your powers inside of cloak if possible (occasionally, you need a power right-freaking now and you can't but that's the rare exception.) For two reasons, if you fire the power in cloak, you only wait for the cloak cooldown, and second you also get the cloak damage boost. The cycle should be cloak/fire power/fire weapon because you get the cloak bonus for 2.5 seconds after you break cloak with a power. Grenades and Recon mine don't break cloak though for some reason.

For bosses, of course, 20% multiplicative extra damage is pretty awesome.

^ what they said covers it basically. ALSO, I would recommend the black widow on the GI for sniping. (I personally prefer the javalin) BW gives more...versatility and gives a bigger window for mistakes
Or you could always use the Widow for sniping.

That's helpful, thanks. How do you use the mine? Do you spam it? Do you know how many mines you can have set at once? Which gun combos do you use? What's the record for number of questions in one post?
You can only have one proxy mine active at ones. The general idea is to shoot a proxy mine everytime you cloak and before shooting your weapon. It goes like cloak -> proxy mine -> shoot in a very quick order. You still get the damage bonus from cloak for a short time after it breaks due to firing the proxy mine.
You have the right idea about taking the radius and then the damage taken, keep that as it is. If you run a shotgun or assault rifle build (or anything that is not sniper rifle) use a 4/6/6/6/4 build. Take damage on the last evolution on proxy mine. If you run a sniper build you can choose between 6/5/6/6/3 or 6/6/6/6/0, it all depends on how good you are at surviving. I always like to have the last evolution in proxy mine since it means that I never have to use my weapon to kill Husks since they die in one cloaked proxy mine (on Gold).
The cooldown for your powers is nothing that you have to worry about since it will be depending on how long you actually stay cloaked. So staying cloaked for a longer time before shooting or using a PM will give you a longer cooldown while the opposite is going to happen if you shoot or use PM as soon as possible. Be careful though about doing this too fast when not hosting since you might get the cloak glitch where the cloak will still stay on and give you a very long cooldown.
My weapons for my GI is usually one of the following: Javelin, Black Widow, Harrier, Claymore, GPS, Scorpion. Some people really like the Particle Rifle, Talon and Hurricane on this one, but I never use them personally.

In short
Cloak->Mine(stagger weak mobs)-> kill them before the recover-> Get into cover to protect your squishy, metallic behind.
Rinse and repeat for amazing results.
Edit- You can have a few mines down at once, but they have to be spaced apart. Two mines too close will detonate them.

Are you sure? It seems that whenever I fire a proxy mine the other one that I fired before that explodes automatically even if they are far apart.

I'm still experimenting with him on silver at the moment but want to move to gold shortly. I'm trying to get my sniping skills up to par. I used the javelin and I was probably ok with it (liked shooting through things) but I've noticed I hit a lot more with the black widow.
Anyone try the entirely melee build for the GI? I've heard some say to put points in melee and then set a pm, followed by melee and everything explodes.

As to melee, melee GI is very powerful. Quite a strong aoe combined with tac cloak and prox mine debuff,

Agree with most of the recommanded weapons except harrier.
Harrier is already short on ammo capcity, using a character that has ROF bonus will worsen its ammo crate camping problem.
I would suggest using piranha (with smart choke attached) instead of harrier. Piranha has MUCH better ammo capacity & dps than harrier, and its accuracy is greatly improved by huntermode's accuracy bonus.

General rule for all infiltrators - do everything from cloak. This is why infiltrators don't generally care about cooldown much. For GI, if you cloak> proxy> shoot, what you're doing is deploying a stagger power (proxy) at your target, breaking cloak (giving you the much shorter cloak-break cooldown) and still getting the damage bonus from cloak (last a few seconds after cloak break) for the shot you fire. Double damage bonus - proxy and shooting with cloak.
If you're quick you can fire a shot first from cloak, and still spit out a proxy before the cooldown kicks in.

Here are some gameplay videos of me using the Harrier on the GI:

I use the Harrier a lot on this class regardless if it is soloing, duoing or full team on Gold or Platinum. The ammo will not really be a problem unless you play on Dagger Hazard. And if you play Unknown/Unknown I recommend taking the Scorpion as a backup weapon because it can come quite in handy when dealing with Phantoms or for crowd control and hacking circles.

Good job. But I would say you could have your performance greatly improved if you were using a piranha instead of a harrier.

This is my GI platinum solo that was done at July last year.
(The video starts at wave7. I was unfamiliar with the recording software, didn't realize it wasnt recording untill wave7)
Even though piranha was soon nerfed, it still performs a lot better than harrier in the hand of GI.

I also bring a backup weapon to deal with phantom, I usually bring a scoprion or acolyte.

I used the Piranha a lot when it was first released but I got tired of it. It is still one of the best weapons out there but for me I perform better with the Harrier or the GPS. As I said earlier a lot of people like the Talon, Particle Rifle or the Hurricane on this class and they are really amazing, it is just that I suck with those weapons compared to when I use one of the weapons I counted up as my prefered weapons.
It is all about your individual playstyle

Thanks for all the tips guys. I just played a game doing the cloak, pm, shoot routine and it made a huge difference.
You're on Xbox right? Join the "Average Xbox Players" group on this forum and you'll have a lot of good teammates for Gold and Platinum. I started the group myself so if you'd like we can play sometimes together?

That sounds good to me. I'll join the club. I can carry Geth-Gold all day with the Kroguard but I know that's no special accomplishment. Just offering in case you need to use crap guns for certain achievements.
