As to why the LI isn't bunking in your qtrs on the Normandy, there IS such a thing as "breach of protocol", which Kaidan brought up in ME1.  At least for Kaidan, Ash, Cortez, Samantha.  Liara's just too busy.

I think you can toss Garrus into that category, too. Even if he isn't Alliance I think Garrus would respect that protocol as well.

Oops!  I completely forgot about "Team Dextro".   And Tali's main problem is her weak immune system.  When she first comes on board after priority: Rannoch, she even has a cold.

I think Kaidan is much better in ME3, and his feud / reconnection with Shepard is a lot more believable.

I'll say Kaidan for two reasons. One, he's a goddamn tank, almost never dies in battle and reave used appropriately is deadly on Insanity for ANY enemy. Two, content-wise, I feel he's more fleshed out than Ash. One thing I believe people overlook is that more than most characters, save maybe Shep Liara and Garrus, you can see and hear Kaidan's thought process when dealt with a difficult situation. ALL of the the other characters are very much "I believe this because 'X; and that's the way it will be until you hit Paragon or Renegade comment". I liked the push back with Kaidan, the more I play this trilogy. He's definitely more thoughtful than most of the other characters in all of the trilogy. Some say he's whinny, and I guess I could see that after the first game, but he's much more three-dimensional than the others when you consider the thought and ideas he adds to various situations. He always seems the most stoic in that regard. And if you romance him, his last lines in the endgame are heartbreakingly delivered. So, it took me a while, and many playthroughs, but he's very much part of the heart of this game.

Ashley is always my sniping partner. It would feel strange not having her in my crew.

Ashley. Love her romance. And, why the hell would pick Kaidan. He's SO BORING.

Two good characters. No point in trying to put you off either of them. All of this talk is making me want to do another play through. Might be too soon. If you are still romancing Ash in ME3, make sure she's very involved in final mission earth.

I think Ash is the more dynamic character, but she's buggy (there's a problem with her marksman skill that is seemingly never going to be fixed) and Kaidan is one of the most useful squadmates, power wise.

since i've gotten a good number of hours put down on the first one, i am quite enjoying Ashley in general...she to me, is the out-spoken beach. as Ashley is a regular in my crew, when doing the "crew" thing, as with Liara....a good balance between the cynical out-spoken loud beach and the positive and clear Liara and "I" being the gray area :P

I really like Kaidan's character. I just don't care for the voice actor.

Ash I like once I figured out - DO NOT use paragon on this character on Mars.

Why not?

"Paragon" is the only way to speak to Ash if you want to like her character.
Well, except on Horizon: everything Shepard says there feels like betraying either him or her.

The marksman skill bug is nothing compared to all the stuff BW planned to add and didn't put in game for her. :?

Kaidan>Ash
Objectively: biotic detonations are the only power that has a bonus to every secondary defense, and Kaidan has more crew interactions and is not so romance-heavy-related with dialogue; subjectively: Kaidan has values that I enjoy and he is the kind of man that I would want to have in my life. Ashley has character inconsistency, and I do not want another overtly-sexual character in a video game; I think she had better modesty in Mass Effect 1, and the whole high-heels thing and new hair job are really poor for tactics. I think Kaidan's lunch scene on the Citadel and his apartment invite are more than enough to convince me that he's worth saving.

In terms of squadmate efficiency, Kaidan is arguably the best character in the game. He is significantly more useful than Ash, whose role on the battlefield can be filled by James. As for a character, it's a coin flip as both have attributes worth intrigue and some irksome traits.

True, especially the James-Vega-Fact: he got introduced to the game not just as the "new guy" but also as soldier character in case Ashley's dead (Virmire/Coup) or removed (Hackett's team). That makes him to the only tank your team has, since every other character is either a biotic, tech or "glass canon". Ashley is pretty much a semi-tank, since she can take a beating but is more useful as a sniper. Technically, she's pretty much a mix of Garrus and James, without the disadvantages of a "glass canon" - Garrus tends to die easily.

However, if you're a biotic / soft class, you might use Ash instead of Kaidan more frequently, if you're not emotionally attached to any of 'em.

Kaidan, because Ashley is totally ****ing useless.

Kaidan has Reave and Overload. REAVE. AND. OVERLOAD.

No, if you're a squishy class you use Kaidan because OVERLOAD AND REAVE. Tech Bursts/Biotic Explosions ALL THE TIME.

DID I MENTION THE REAVE AND OVERLOAD?

*flails*

@CptData: Seconded. Infiltrator, Ashley, Garrus squad. No biotics at all, and I can kick some serious ass on Insanity. Ashley's Inferno Grenade sets up tech explosions beautifully, and Garrus's triple Overload can fully capitalise on them. Seriously - it's a triple tech explosion. Meanwhile my infiltrator build is flexible enough to fight up close or at a range. Who needs biotics?

However, if you ARE playing as a biotic... I hate to admit it, but Kaidan might be the better match. He's reasonably tough, and Reave & Overload are both ridiculously useful. Take James along as a tank - his inferno ammo can be used to set up tech explosions, letting Kaidan do both Biotic and Tech detonations.

Frankly, if you're an experienced enough player, you can make either of them work well.

For game content? I prefer Ashley's content, but a fair bit of it is bugged, and the rest kinda stops after the Cerberus Coup. Kaidan probably has more content with a better spread throughout ME3.
