I'm playing a multiplayer game with my girlfriend where each of us has a character we have rolled, with the rest of the slots being filled by NPC's. We have the Baldur's Gate Trilogy installed, and plan to play through both games. We are leaving open the possibility of changing our proficiencies around at the time of the transition from the first to the second game, since that's how it works with the basic installations anyway.

What weapons would you recommend for us? I have a gnome fighter/illusionist, and she has an elf fighter/thief who is currently focused on stealth.

Thanks for your time!

I was going to answer this but it feels like I'd be adding spoilers. Perhaps ask in the BG1 forum where this would be more appropriate?

My concern with posting it there is that I will only get advice pertaining to one of the games. Instead of discussing specific weapons, what if we just talk about proficiencies? Would that be nonspecific enough?

OK. In multiplayer one consideration is how to switch between ranged and melee. A shield with either a sling or a 1 handed weapon works, or a bow and either 2 handed weapon or single weapon.

If you want to switch between dual-wielding and either a shield or a ranged weapon you'll be in the inventory screen and the other person may unpause by mistake or will have to patiently wait every couple of minutes while you decide to switch.

Fighter/Illusionist (Ranged - I assume other party members will provide cover)
If you have strength of 18 then a composite longbow would give a damage bonus of 1.
Either longbow type gives a +1 to hit. Longbows start to lose out in BG2 (to shortbows and also a crossbow) but by that time you'll probably be casting most of the time and filling in with a bow.

Fighter/Thief (Melee)
For an elf I would use longsword and single weapon style for backstabs, although in BG2 there is a case for being able to dish out the occasional blunt damage - by that time you should have plenty of weapon proficiencies. A decent selection of long swords exist in both games although katana would give a higher damage in BG2. Shortbow is a good ranged option across the games.

If your plan is for the fighter/illusionist to be the primary melee then dual-wield starts to make sense, however this can cause issues when 2 or 3 spells are used as the number of attacks per round can go haywire. Those 2-3 spells may or may not be important to you.

There are other considerations such as what other party members are likely to use as there are typically one or two good weapons of each type in BG1 but a wider selection in BG2.

I assume the fighter/illusionist is in the first slot i.e. if he dies then your game is over?

If that’s the case then a weapon/ shield combo is my suggestion eg. sling and shield for range and a mace or any other single weapon. Dual-wield is fun as the second fighter or when playing solo but experience says not to use it in a first slot party... it's just not a good idea.

If sling and shield is out for whatever reason then longbows & staff would be my second pick.

Longbows because there are not many classes which want to use then in bg2 so they tend to go spare.

Staff because there are a couple that work very well in melee (against special targets) and your Mage levels makes good synergy with the extra spells/ ability which some staffs provide.

@Gate70 it is hard to avoid spoilers isn’t it m8?

I think I will repost this on the borders Gate 2 forum. That's the game where all of this really matters the most anyway. Thanks for your input, and I will welcome more discussion on that forum.

Another consideration is to think ahead to what special weapons you plan to assemble in BG2. That would argue to have one of your prime characters skilled in hammers and the other in flails.
