 I don't have the option of asking alistair "i'd like to discuss something private" i can only ask him questions about the grey wardens etc. This is like my sixth playthrough and this has never happened before, i did use the exp exploit but it's never done this before. Help!

 It's just above neutral and it's immediately after lothering.

Alistair's 'something private' conversations require an active romance.

  In my previous playthroughs when i interact with him there are usually two options "i have some questions" and "i'd like to discuss something private" however the latter doesn't seem to show up.

The second option only appears for Alistair with an active Romance. A Neutral approval indicates that there is no romance. (A romanced Alistair would be Interested at that level, not Neutral.)

I think You have to initiate the romance by telling him he is handsome ? Then give him some wine, a few beers and he'll be good to go
