It doesn't have to be a rocket, although that has the best odds.

It works by spamming Right Trigger (or equivalent) Heavy Melee, or even powers, although I've never successfully done it by spamming powers, myself.

Don't switch between them, stick with one button and spam it repeatedly. I find Right Trigger works best. If you see your gun shooting, it's a good sign that it will work.

I've only done it against Banshees and Praetorians. I've never managed it against anything else.

ive saved myself by firing the shotgun I had equipped while being instagibbed a banshee, never been picked up while using the cobra missile.
