Just tried an archer - was doing OK with 40hp at level 5 but an ambush (ring of bandits plus two wolves) got him.

So far he's odd-jobbed Candlekeep, helped Marl, Firebead, Noober, Brage, Mirianne and Joia. Arrows and 5 charges of the magic missile wand dealt with Shoal to get a level 2 spell - purchased scrolls of friends, invisibility and PfP.
An invisible run through Nashkel mine was extremely confusing for the kobolds. Fortean broke invisibility to speak to Mulahey then disappeared again. Mulahey was wounded by his minions so Fortean had to show himself and resorted to door-hopping (grumble), being caught out by a super-fast command and barely surviving. A couple of healing potions saw Fortean out-melee Mulahey and a risky rest paid off so Fortean could sneak out unobserved.
Nimbul lost a fight with the guards while Molkar turned up at the fairground. Invisible confustion led to a last man standing (Morvin) situation so Fortean blinded him and shot 100+ arrows in his vague direction. A nearby merchant handed over 120 more arrows and Morvin eventually took one too many.
Tranzig proved troublesome so Fortean left him and went in search of Teven - blinded and pincusioned. Fortean realised this helped him not one bit, so stood next to Raiken and suggested he should be recruited instead of robbed. Raiken falls for the bardic charisma and Tazok is smooth-talked out of a fight too.
Fortean is about to fire an arrow at a bandit and see what havoc he can create in the camp.
(n.b. invisible tracking is helping here, although many enemies don't do it the likes of Molkar and his gang insisted on clustering around the invisible bard so they could listen to the loony lyrics or be led to the Great Galoop).
Edit, & someone had find familiar - thanks very much.

So how do you feel about the Cloak of Cheddar? This item alone can make this challenge a lot easier. Is there a mod that nerfs the cloak? I could probably make one if there isn't.
Edit:
My first run ended at lvl 4/4 (Mage/Cleric) thanks to Nimbul. I didn't notice that invisibility has faded and Nimbul used the round and disabled my char and killed him after that,

I haven't ruled out using the cloak as a last resort in some situations. Initially I was wondering whether there would be classes that would find Slythe a near impossibility, but I think there are strategies that would give everyone at least some sort of a chance without it.

Neira is doing the uninjured each round trick, seems to be caused when returning after exiting the area. Having blinded her I could barely injure her with arrows before she returned to uninjured - I see this as a gamebreaker so decided to enable the console and CTRL-Y her. Seems fair enough to me as arrows should have killed her eventually, and I don't get the XP but I do get to loot the corpse. Does that sound acceptable?

The cave of Black Alaric provided tomes of bodily health and intelligence.
Korax solo'd the top group of basilisks and Mutamin, killed Kirian next but Peter retaliated and the free xp dried up. Fortean used two 5 turn PfP spells to clear the remaining basilisks then blinded Peter / Lindin / Baerin to shoot them down. Bracers of archery were discovered on their corpses.
Jester 7, 42 kills, Shoal the Nereid.

2 hours were spent with Drasus and co, took a while but all 4 killed. The invisible confusion sometimes works, sometimes doesn't and Fortean has done several laps of the outlying area by the end.
Hareisan was killed in a guardroom brawl while Fortean observed. edit, no, forgot that's how it started but a bit of grey matter was also involved.

Davaeorn proved troublesome. In his confusion he headed upstairs into the ogre mage jailor room so Forteam blocked the door and after the ogre hit him twice Fortean got bored and decided more action was needed...
The ogre mage was ensconced behind the (unmoveable) door so Fortean tried a blind on Davaeorn - success (didn't expect that). Arrows of ice were used as Davaeorn ran around the room but eventually Fortean moved just far enough for the ogre mage to spot him. Fortean used a potion to gain 5 rounds of resistance to magic and uses a fireball (wand) to finish off Davaeorn and distract half a dozen hobgoblins who have arrived.
The first set of magic missiles are absorbed but Fortean glugs two healing potions as more magic missiles land. He runs, then glugs a potion of invisibility as he runs again, but the ogre mage uses divination to reveal Fortean. With no invisibility left Fortean perfects his battlesong - screaming "letmeout" at the top of his voice.
The ogre mage and various guards give chase but Fortean has managed to glug more potions and escapes upstairs - into the remnants of Hareishan's guards. He screams and runs past two ghasts - they slow the chasing horde as everybody bottlenecks behind them. Fortean uses the gap to enter a weapons store and slam the door shut before immediately resting. Good idea.
Bad idea. There are ten guards in the weapons room now (talk about a tight fit). Fortean opens the door and runs, taking a couple of arrows and glugging another healer. He makes the next level but a dozen guards leap through before he can move and there is no way past them so he runs back. Four guards are here with the two ghasts closing in too. Fortean tweaks his wand (!) and applies two Aganazzar Scorchers then shoots the remaining ghast.
He heads up another set of stairs and sings away as the group of guards mill around. His plan is to get them to fight each other until he has to retreat again but a gap opens and he races through. Safe - no, hit by a poison arrow. Two more healing potions are used before he remembers the elixir of health in his backpack - glug.
The guards are chasing but Fortean races round to the friendly miner and floods the mine.

The joke's on Fortean this time, will have to retire him as it's my fault for not picking up the letters in the heat of battle.

Hmm. City not open. Journal says "Davaeorn proved unhelpful so I will have to investigate his belongings for clues". That'll be the belongings in the ogre jailor room which is flooded and there is no entrance to the mine now.

I believe you also can get the information you need by interviewing his apprentice - he normally is in a room very close to the level 4 exit. I routinely leave Davaeorn's letters behind. Granted the mine is flooded now, but now you know for next time...

The chapter screen that usually shows as he dies didn't trigger. I should have spotted that but I was distracted by the ogre mage. I don't think him being blinded and out of melee range should matter but I suspect it is because he'd left his level and gone upstairs.

I was going to post a couple of screenshots but they don't appear to have taken so here is a precis of it. Chapter 5 appears to have been active as soon as NASHKEL mine was sorted out, and there are two entries for Cloakwood mine - not sure if that is correct or not.
Chapter 5 active quests;
Day 65 : Bassilus zombies (not attempted)
Day 71 : Dryad tree (Krumm killed her)
Day 117 : Retrieve Hurgan's dagger (no)
Day 119 : Coran's wyvern hunt (dumped him)
Day 136 : One of the bandits told us the mine entrance is to the East.
Day 151 : Fought Davaeorn, unhelpful. Inspect his stuff.
Chapter 5 completed quests;
Day 89 : Zhurlong's boots
Day 95 : The BEAR
Day 106 : Retrieve Perdue's sword
Day 115 : Find Farmer Brun's son
Day 153 : Flood the mines, killing anyone left behind, dealt a blow to the Iron Throne
Day 153 : Flood the mines, freed the slaves first, dealt a blow to the Iron Throne
Day 156 : Returned Unshey's girdle
