Where I'm from (take a guess), male and female Commander Shepard appear on the cover.

The cover has two sides. On one side is Male Shepard and on the other is Female Shepard.

I'd like a female on the cover, yes. I've got it up to here with white, straight cis males on them.
Even better, I want a Fem!Trailer. One that isn't just an afterthought.

And by the way, the cover of the ME3 collectors edition was a step in the right direction, but one thing bothers me. FemShep is on the BACK. Which means I can't treat it as the front because when I open the box, the DVDs are on the wrong side. So ManShep is still on the front for me.
I don't know if anyone else had that problem or if I'm just being weird about this...

My ME3 does too.  Mine is flipped to the female version and was that way when I bought it.

Edit: and I am in the states so it's just not overseas.

While I'm with Sylvius and Jimmy on that there shouldn't be a protagonist on the cover, if there is one, it should be the flip cover, not having both the male and female default protagonist on the same cover. That would just be weird, having the same person appearing in the same place as two different people. Femshep and Broshep are both Shepard; they are not different people.

I read this thread and fail to understand one thing.
It's online age. Most, if not all, gamers that buy AAA titles have an Internet connection. Are some people here trying to say that prior to buying some game, they do not check the Internet for related info, spoiler-free or not, they do not download and play demos (if available), and once the game is bought, they never open the manual? You know, it does help to do all those things.

O.O you can?  /goes hunting for button to switch it

It's in the Edit Profile Information and then set Site Theme to Mass Effect 3 (Female).

Thank you very much. I had no idea there was any way to change it.

Most of the time I just go to the store with the vague desire to get something new to play. So no, I don't read about the game beforehand.

This. & At least FemShep got a trailer also. ;)

And that's all fShepard got, really. Only one damn trailer, a cover where she's at back and not at front. Then, she was nowhere to be seen and all we saw in trailers was the dudeshep showing how a man can be badass.
Wow, big steps here, Bioware.
FAIL.

Edit: not to mention that we got to vote for her looks in ME3 (where dudeshep got the same look, but thankfully she was still the redhead she always was) and she didn't even had a damn facemodel.
If that's equality, i'm the pope.

This thread is basically asking for equal presentation of genders in marketing like trailers and box art.

How about they put Maevaris on the cover? Everybody wins.

So, like, a holographic cover, where you can see a female or male dude-bro/bra depending on how you look at it?

Equally as offensive (since we are all about using that word in this thread, apparently) to me, since it counteracts the very nature of the game's premise. But that may placate those in this thread. Or not. I find myself not caring because we are debating something I am inherently against to begin with (box-art, trailers, promotional material that show a set protagonist in a game without a set protagonist).

If I see a macho on the cover of a game then chances are that I won't be able to play as a female character. Especially when there are no other indications on the box. Something similar goes for trailers. A macho fighting his way out of a spectacular situation, suggest that it is a game to be played by men.

Now one can say that the franchise is well known and therefor a male on the cover would suffice, but on the other hand it doesn't have to sell to existing fans. The company wants to expand its public, so it is supposed to be viewed by newcomers. If the box art and the trailer can suggest that the player can be either male or female then at least females may get curious and are less likely to skip the game by judging the cover.

So all that is required is to put it on the box, show it in a trailer and give it some attention in the pre-release info. It should be part of the regular information about the game. Looks very healthy to me and it shouldn't have to upset anyone.

Put no character on or both the female and male versions of the protagonist on the box would be best

I really have difficulty with the notion that players are somehow 'internalizing' the idea that, if a man's on the cover, then you've got to play a man. It's absurd.

I'm going to side with Sylvius and Jimmy on this one. If there must be cover art, let's stick Flemeth on it.

I'm still working my way through these pages but I thought I'd throw in my two cents. As a female gamer, I am ten times more likely to actively search out game info if it's advertised with a woman that doesn't have her boobs hanging out for all the world to see. If hubby hadn't brought DA home I probably wouldn't have picked it up and it was DA that brought me to BioWare and thus ME.

It still drives me mad that I can't get away from Morrigan's sideboob bull**** after all this time ( though it probably wouldn't had Flemeth been similarly dressed in rags that left the majority of her upper body eposed even while Daveth is complaining about how cold it is.)

I'm hoping they return to DAO style white and red covers with no people on them.

I don't really see the point of putting a male hero with a set look on the cover of a game where the main character is customisable. If Geralt is on the cover of the Witcher it makes sense because you play Geralt but with DA2 and ME you just alienate people who like customisation so they don't even pick up the box.

Before ME came out I had no idea you could play as female. Sheploo was EVERYWHERE so I assumed it was a set character. Only when I was reading through the fine print of some faq about the game I saw the information you could play as female. Surely the ability to play as female and to customize the look of your character is a plus so I don't see why you would try to hide that and not even mention it in any of the videos.

In all honesty, I like it when the cover art shows the protagonist, usually a male with a bad ass look.

And I would like it to keep it that way. No offense, it's just my taste.

One thing this thread makes me think about is where it leads. It's been stated in this thread that the flippable cover isn't enough because the digital copies don't have that and only the male protagonist is visible in that case. OK, so let's say they make the female protagonist the default cover. What happens next time? Would it be alright for them to make it male or would that be an issue again? Is it actually equal representation some people are after or just a reversal of representation?

I forgot to make my point! As a relatively average female human, the cover art and advertising are what bring me to new franchises/IPs. If BioWare wants to increase sales why wouldn't they target a growing sector of their demographics rather than worrying about the teenage boys who get half their money (or more) from Mom anyway? Bring on the badass chicks!

Well, alot of guys play those FB..online games, too. The angry birds. Now that...Candy thing? Poker, all that. I get constant updates in my FB thread abt their progress. Sigh.

And, unfortunately, fantasy rpg's aren't really considered something played by "real gamers", either. We all know that's a lie, but that stereotype is definitely out there.

As far as Ken Levine, well, it's interesting that the only game that beat Bioshock Infinite w/ launch day sales for 2013--so far was...TombRaider.

Granted, Lara has a strong fanbase, but so does Bioshock.

It's alot of variables. Alot of moving parts to this question.
