One thing this thread makes me think about is where it leads. It's been stated in this thread that the flippable cover isn't enough because the digital copies don't have that and only the male protagonist is visible in that case. OK, so let's say they make the female protagonist the default cover. What happens next time? Would it be alright for them to make it male or would that be an issue again? Is it actually equal representation some people are after or just a reversal of representation?

I guess they could incorporate both the male and female default protagonist on one cover? Or just not show either.

Doesn't really bother me what's on the front anyway, lol.

I thought the Elder Scrolls series had tastefully-done box art, where they didn't show a protagonist at all. I would be fine with that.

As long as game companies continue to make games where I can choose my gender and customize my character, those are the games that I will continue to buy. Thank you Bioware for not forcing me to play as a male character.

Where I'm from (take a guess), male and female Commander Shepard appear on the cover.

The cover has two sides. On one side is Male Shepard and on the other is Female Shepard.

My ME3 does too.  Mine is flipped to the female version and was that way when I bought it.

Edit: and I am in the states so it's just not overseas.

In which case HIGH FIVE!

Is high fiving out of date? It seems pretty 80's-90's.

Still, Skyrim had a trailer with a male dragonborn. Also, a cover with male.

In all honesty, I like it when the cover art shows the protagonist, usually a male with a bad ass look.

Which is fine, but it's good to note that Marcus Fenix is always Marcus Fenix. Through my many playthroughs of the Mass Effect series and DA2, I've never once used the "default" appearance.

My Shepards and Hawkes bear little resemblance to the guys on the box. I don't think I'm alone in that. That's an excellent feature that should be emphasized. You can craft a hero of any sex or race? Shout it from the rooftops, don't bury it.

I don`t got anything against having male characters on the box as long I got to see the female version too. For example in the ME trilogy only appears Sheploo (at the least in Spain), or don`t put anything at all. I know that there are more male players, but I think that nowadays there isn`t a big difference in the number of female gamers and male gamers.

To sum up: The better way is to put both female and male on the box like they did with ME3 :)

I didn't even know you can play as females in Skyrim, so I do understand why people want females on the box. The reverse could be true if they only show females. I think they should just avoid using protagonist on the cover altogether to not give a false impression of the product. Dragon Age Origin worked out fine without it.

Not only females but also different races as well. But noooooope, they went with the typical white dude human hero as a cover. <_<

Wouldn't sell. Google Kevin Levine box art for reasons why.

Just because he says that doesn't mean he's right.

Video game companies use the excuse that having a female character on the box art will lead to fewer sales...because they have SO much evidence to prove this? How many games can you list that had a female character on the box art? And how many of those games do you know for a fact had the same marketing budget as games with a male character on the box?

They use the arguments that focus groups respond better to male characters on the box. This video that came out today illustrates some of the issues with basing things off focus groups.

Basically it comes down to the video game industry uses "having a female lead character on the box" as an excuse for their marketing teams to not do their jobs. Its the easy thing to do, when there's no concrete proof that the game won't sell the same amount of copies as have a male character on the front.

I think the best thing Bioware could do is put the female player character on the box. The 2nd best thing would be to have no character on the box. The worst thing they could do is put a male character on the box.

This is good stuff.

Game companies are going to keep this up until they don't, and you have to start somewhere. I'd like it to be Bioware and EA, considering it is a more accurate portrayal of the content of their games, and their proclaimed values.

I do like the idea of having the reverse jackets, and shipping half female protagonist and half male protagonist, and having both on the shelves. And I think two equally awesome trailers depicting a female protagonist and also a male protagonist with equal air time would be good, as well.

Oh look....it's this thread again.

People overacting and finding significance in insignificant stuff again. I weep for humanity.

Yup, god forbid some people want equality with gender in media.

This is still insignificant. I do not ask Bioware to put a black guy or a a black woman on the box, ( as long as I can play one ) while I''m tired of white people always on the cover. Did you ever see a black hero on the cover in Bioware's game ? No. Do you see me complaining to Bioware about how it neglected a part of its fanbase ? No . Do you see me crying like a little girl ? No.  Because, I know what is most important. They allow me to play what I want and what I am. If they do that one day, I'll be happy, If they don't, I don't care.

Now, I hope that Bioware won't put anybody on the cover, so you all, male and female gamers can shut up.

Tallis on the box aka Felicia Day.Rotfl. Now that would be fun simply due to all the controversy it would generate on BSN.

Funnily enough, this seems like the solution that would make many of the people in this thread happy.

How about no protagonist on box art? Bloody dragon background (since that is DA's icon) with at most a few companions. I want a customizable PC, so I dont want some 'other inquisitor' on the cover, someone i might not use.

They could always put the antagonist on the box. Majora's Mask, Diablo, etc. Or a symbol. Majora's Mask, NWN, etc. The trend of nonstop dudebro protagonists on covers seems to have given us a pretty narrow perspective of what a box ought to look like-- even subverting it with a female protagonist instead is still following that narrow framework...

I'm good with not having anyone on the cover, but what about instead of sticking femshep on the back, why not put them both on the cover? Appeals to both, & it shows equality, which is exactly what we need. And that whole BS about females on the cover won't sell isn't true, take a look at the hype Remember Me is getting, it's all any of my friends are talking about. That has lead female. Or what about the recent Lara Craft game?

Guys only tell us "complainers" to shut up because since forever you've never EVER had to deal with stuff like this. It's something so little to you, but to us, all of it & not just game covers, but everything in our society epitomizes the male, the white male to be specific, but women? We're objectified & treated unequally, & then made to believe how we act in protest to stuff like this is either "overreacting" or "its over something silly".

Yes, no default dudebro on the cover would be great. I am with the no protagonist on the cover crowd on this on. We are creating the character, it's not fixed, so it should be reflected on the box.

I can understand this for Skyrim; they were trying to convey a Nordic feeling, and when the average person thinks 'Vikings' they're gonna think a bearded, armoured guy, not a female cat lady. And they had to show somebody for gameplay. I never once felt like they were saying the iron helmet, leather armour Nord guy was the Dovahkiin I 'should' be playing.

Besides, they showed a montage of many different Dragonborns doing different things in some of the trailers.

I prefer something like they do on Dragon Age Origins, a symbol or some scene. Perhaps Flemeth, Morrigan, an important character but not the protagonist. Because we have a different protagonist for each Dragon Age game (opposite to Mass Effect, it was Shepard all the time).

But, if i'm not wrong, Bioware says they will be using both sexs on marketing; so there is going to be a protagonist like Hawke. (no "Random" one, like the Warden)
